Anus_Presley

If you have a look in the Aphex edition of NME from last
year in the bottom left hand corner of the main interview
page is a picture of rdj with all of the rephlex crew in the
background. The caption for the picture says

"Rephlex: Probably the coolest label in the world."

No the question is, "Is NME cool in order to make it's
opinion valid?" My guess is that all those people you know
where you live who are into new monkey will probably think
it is, so i guess the answer is

"Yes, IDM is cool."

"by the way, what do college music professors think of
idm?"

depends on what school you go to, but I think that most
college music instructors think that it just noise, glitches
and blips and bloops, they apprieciate that someting
different and a style of music that is abstract and to them
that makes in interesting. It varies from school to school

I think IDM doesnt have to be cool, music shouldnt be about
being cool, it should stick to being about music, the whole
cool attitude really ruined hip hop IMO.

i think hip hop sucks cause we're seeing those posers around
with tricked out cars and wearing jersyes. that does not
make you affiliated with hip hop at all ... just the look.
and that look is quiet embarrasing imo. they'll look back
on themselves in 40 years and llaaaaauugh.

period.

what do college professors think of IDM?

in the synthesis department, they love it.

Dr Boulanger... one of the guys who helped make csound
(check out csounds.com for info on him) LOVES autechre

and hes like 40-50. not sure

but teachers in the jazz department dont like it.

there is the synthesis department... and its all about sound
design... synthesizers, samplers, DSP, everything
electronic...

college professors...

Interesting points everyone is bringing up about this.

I've found that older music afficianados can not
listen to IDM appropriately. Simply because IDM pulls
historic references from more recent eras... and nowadays,
from itself.

If a [professor] has never heard dub, hip hop, NES music,
C64 tunes, house music or electro, then there is no point of
reference. IDM will sound like a bunch of beeps and
bloops (and occasionally 'schnoots')...

so there

yes, but we cant generalize about people.

alot of my older teachers DO listen to all sorts of music,
dub, hiphop, house, electro etc etc etc

you should hear the music that my teachers make... its
fucking amazing

go to the csounds link i posted before...

go to Dr Richard Boulanger, and there is songs he's done
with csound. "make sure you get the mp3... not the .orc or
.sco file

and check out the radio batton!

Good point!
IDM is the end of a musical journey for many and your ears
are ready.
That may not be the case for everybody tho , some people are
incredibly open minded when it comes to music.

"there is a gap between idm and "normal" music thats
waaay to large to be crossed without a very open mind"

> depends. some idm is very accessible, RDJalbum for
example, or some squarepusher tracks (esp. the first tracks
from most of his albums)... and i think these could be
considered as "cool".

cooper's world, for example.
but autechre for example i don't think is "cool". it may be
great, but cool isn't the word for it imo.

It is ABSOLUTELY not cool. And yet, it is. There's so many
types of ''cool''. Computer geeks can be ''cool'' in their
own Elvis Costello-ish ways. It's hip to be square
sometimes.

I am NOT cool.
