GYBE! = best band ever?

While they're not on the same level as other bands you
might think of as deserving this, while they may not be the
greatest musical assembly/musicians, they are certainly the
best that can fit under the name of band. Do you agree?

If I were to curse any band with that millstone of a title
it would have to be the Beatles.

She's funny. I wonder what she thinks of all the attention.
There are lots of fan sites.

Do people follow her around going beep beep beep?

Maybe she'll deconvert and marry the Dell dude.

OOOH NOOOOO etc etc etc

you should. they were a band in the late eighties, and
spawned things like Tortoise, Papa M and Bonnie Prince
Billy..

they were very loud and very intense. and wonderful. they
only made 2 LPs (tweez and spiderland) and an untitled
12"/cd-single.

you should check them out. :)

GYBE! is to totally amazing.....but best band in ze
world......ummm thats going a bit far.

they are certainly one of the most innovative and original
bands out there, and thats saying a lot these days. they do
are not after the multitudes of fans, but perhaps a more
serious sector of the audience. they certainly have me roped
in! =0)

anyone got/heard/seen a copy of godspeed's first ever album,
33 limited tape release, "all lights fucked on the hairy amp
drooling"? That looks tasty - when they were a three piece.
The called a song 'Steve Reich', hehe. I reckon i'd kill
someone for a copy of that.

And yeah, i kinda aggree with you, Godspeed made three of
the most important records of the last 10-15 years. Can't
wait for Yanqui.

BTW, anyone noticed DJ QBert's story on that Apple 'switch'
page? Fly.

they played steve reich as part of their peel session

recorded january 19, 1999

hung over as the queen in maida vale
1.monheim
2.chart #3
3.steve reich

here's an mp3 of the whole thing (note: this is good for anyone to hear, as
this is the mp3 that got me into godspeed to begin with.. i
now own all the in-print albums)

id well like to hear that tape, but id reckon they only gave
it to friends and stuff. rumors or whatever say that it's a
bit more abrasive than the present godspeed sound.

cant wait for the new album. heard some of the songs live -
v. good.

i like f#a# infinity and slow riot better than lift yr
skinny fists but that one is excellent as well. i like
theyre spoken word bits on the government and end of the
world more than the ones on lift. i want yanqui uxo real
bad. that and sigur ros's new album i want most right now.

Well, as long as the Beatles exist (and they'll exist long
after all others have been forgotten), nobody else is going
to be the ''best band ever''.

But GYBE! is definitely amazing, and I wouldn't be too
opposed to them winning the title of ''best band NAME
ever''.

well necrophones is the latest release from lungfish, which
is a year or so old. the pupils album is pretty new and i
like it, very minimal. only guitar and vocals and limited
drumming. it got very awful reviews but I found it a rather
interesting cd. its different from lungfish but good in a
different way. to answer your question i believe that the
pupils will tour and then lungfish will begin making their
new album.

it's probably like ASMZ; shorter less complex stuff.

I think Molasses is good. In terms of sound it's not much
like any of the other GYBE! sideprojections.. It's
oppressed folk music.

I regret they use the same 'recipe' for each song. Building
slowly the melody to a peak at middle length and then slowly
decaying. The same format for each song.

I think Fly Pan Am are more innovative in this way.

I'd really like to see GY!BE live. Anyone have been to one
of their gigs ?

gybe will be talked about in 20 or 30 years because as so
many of you have mentioned their creativity is to hard to
ignore. gybe is our king crimson. imo anyway. Low is
another band that I believe will be talked about in 20 or 30
years. however my favorite band right now has got to be
american analog set. I saw in 1999 in the summer and I've
been hooked since. I believe our Nick Drake is Mark Kozelek
of the Red House Painters.

the beatles will probably never give up the title of best
band of all time though. not that I like them that as much
as most people do.

far.
