Have you ever heard of Clark Ashton Smith? He was a
contempory of Lovecraft's and an amazing strange fiction
writer in his own rite.. He uses a much more colorful
palette with his imagery than Lovecraft. 'City of the
Singing Flame' is one of my favorite short stories of his.
There's an online transcription of it here if you're
interested :

Lots of snorky princes and multisnouted beasts.

Ha ha, I remember tripping out when I was reading Lovecraft
when I was really ill. I kept on thinking I was in that
house in the story about that witch in the port town. It was
nuts...

I have a couple of lovecraft books on my wishlist at amazon,
I'll wait till I've paid my rent then get a couple methinks
(I've had no luck hunting them down in second hand stores).
Have you played the roleplaying game based on the lovecraft
books? Call of Cthulu or something...

You'd be amazed how much lovecraft's writing has influenced
"folklore". Even the games Quake (1) and nightmare creatures
are heavily influenced by it. It's also apparent from one of
his stories (about a dream quest) that he was able to dream
lucidly, long before it was recorded in modern science.

Apparentley his great volume of correspondence was his
greatest achievement, I forget the figures, but there was a
vast quantity of letters he wrote in his lifetime.

I'm reading Beowulf and Eaters of the Dead right now, and
I'm having a tough time... I barely ever read books, and I
can't keep my mind on them, I need total silence.

Beowulf is fucking impossible, sheesh.

i don't have to read beowulf anywhere :D

but we have kalevala, our own national epic tale. probably a
bit similar experience is to suffer through that.

Smoke a little herb, play Mogwai's EP+2, followed by Orbvs
Terrarvum, while reading some of Terence McKenna's thoughts.
