So, since Zebox folded, I've never actually had a music
website for my own stuff that I've controlled (I've found a
few places hosting it w/o permission, which is flattering).

BIYC was fun whilst it was around, but I'd like somewhere to
host some of the music I've done the past few years. Please
could someone recommend somewhere to me, bearing the
following in mind?

The following are important to me:
- Free for me to have hosted
- No incessant nagging to pay for their premium "hosted"
service
- No (or little) spam from other users asking me to listen
to their shitty wannabe Tiesto music.
- Ability for listeners to hear tracks without having to
create an account.

The following are not important:
- Me making money from it.
- Ability to customise the look and feel.
- Lossless audio quality.
- The site being perceived as "cool" by hipsters.

bandcamp
mine

+ Free hosting
+ No incessant whatever
+ No spam from other users, ability to recommend 3 releases
hosted by bandcamp, not necessary though
+ Listeners can stream or download the music without
creating an account
+ You can set the price of the downloads, there is no
minimum, you can let the listeners to choose the price too,
which is kind of similar to a "donate" function.
+ Good, simple looking
- Free downloads are limited but the limit is high enough
for most users I guess.

soundcloud is great too, though they remind you to get a
pemium account, but not too often imo. best feature is the
timed comments.

i'm using both of them.

Everything is web 2.0. I just used zshare and I was like,
sigh, find the file, type a stupid description cuz its
pribibly required. Then its like NO U! you have to enable
javascript, a proprietary stallman hated softwareds for you
to use this! So I un-noscripted it, and did it AGAIN. and it
was like NO U! now the page isn't load cuz the javascript
enabling means you have to open a new page and close that
first page for no reason. So I ddi that and finally FINALLY,
it uploaded my STUPID mp3. In web 2.0, everything takes at
least 3 attempts. And on soundcloud the web 2.0 borg thought
it would be good to have people graffiti text all over the
middle of your song. xltronic and craigslist are luckily
only about web 1.4. They're covered with aids but better
than the alternative made by ivy league ted talk fags or
something. You're still allowed to write 'nigger' on web 1.4
sites I think. Try writing that on soundcloud and I bet
you'll be bannef from life and end up on terrorist watch
lists. Hope this post was helpful.

If you're not a successful talk radio host within five years
I will eat your balls in a mustard sandwich.

I can't talk impromptu because spoken words dissipate,
preventing my very limited memory from being able to
remember the previous sentence and shape a coherent
paragraph. And my cyborg brain model doesn't function right
without constant search engine supervision.

bandcamp is good but not good enough because it's still the
needle in a haystack problem from a search/find/enjoy
perspective and you won't make enough to be sufficientlt
satisfied. better to give it away. youtube is the best, or
having your own website, surely? still a lot to be said for
being signed by a good record label, but that will fade out.

I always just post my stuff to my Dad's Facebook wall.

People usually check it out because they respect him.

Bandcamp is perfect now (or rather, it's getting better with
each and every feature). They have a proper search feature,
based on keywords/genres, which does a good job of finding
things. Likewise, the referal system is great and it's a
great way of getting more attention to and from releases
you're interested in. They've also spruced up the homepage,
giving focus to albums of the week etc.. hopefully without
turning into a mess like MP3.com used to be.

It's just a really quick, efficient way to listen to music,
sell music and support artists. Everyone wins. The layout is
clean, they have lots of bandwidth and it's as simple as
clicking a link to buy stuff. It's done a lot for this
shitty industry imo and has giving the average listener a
means to support artists/labels directly. I've been with
them from the very start and they're going in the right
direction.

selling music

I agree with just about everything bandcamp does, as well as
soundcloud. They really got their concepts nailed.
Soundcloud is way more social but there's a lot less spam
from users than you think. At least I have only gotten a
handful of direct requests whether via comments or private
message. However commenting on others tracks DOES help you
but then you get into the feedback cycle so...

Bandcamp has no comments and so you're pretty isolated from
the listeners directly on the site but it's really nice for
having a public archive and that's what I use it for. With
the pre-releases and everything it feels basically like a
release site. Love it.
