Joy Division

it might not seem as impressive now.... but when Joy
Division came out... they were like nothing that was out
there at the time.

And although now there are bands who can and have done the
JD sound and are even better at it... you have to appreciate
where music was at the time when JD came out.

I don't think anyone improved on the Joy Division aesthetic.
People too elements of it and incorporated them into other
styles to nice effect, but who took Joy Division's sound to
the next level?

(other than Interpol, lolz)

yup thats a good point... not much i've heard with that
same raw feel... close and different but with the same drug
filled haze. but I liked about Joy Division is just how
honest it was/is.

There are lots of bands and groups who's managers say "do
this sound, or make a song about this...." and they do. I
always felt like the lyrics and feel of JD was just so
honest and so true... it's almost painful to think about the
stories behind those songs.

No band/label/manager would suggest to a band today to
follow the same route... they would be afraid of the
consequences of it.. or the anti-media friendly-ness of it.

Only 3 or 4 good songs..., and what would they be, in your
opinion, out of all the Joy Division output I'm sure you
diligently sat through?

Joy Division takes more than one casual listen to take in,
at least it did for me.

then it opens up.

Instant gratification is not always good in an album.

Just because you don't like it after listening to a 30
second snippet, don't right it off.

Come back to it at a later date.

yeah god knows it took me 5400003298939 listens before i
liked 3 out of 4 of the songs i actually like by them.
disorder is an instant classic though. that song is great.
too bad thats the only good song on unknown pleasures. i
guess they figured on that being the case and put it as the
album opener.

closer is one of the worst albums ever made though, save for
some of the guitar playing. the guitars arent half bad.
everything else on that album is nauseating.

I agree you both clearly don't know what you're talking
about and it's no coincidence that you're both American
nancies bitter about having shit bands like "She wants
revenge" who so wish they were Joy Division they'd suck even
yours.

I had the same initial reaction to JD, but I eventually grew
to love their music. Rent 24 hour party people.

The FAll are another band in this vein, but they had hard
rhythms and short stabbing vocals. A sound that hasn't been
explored enough.

I love Joy Division, but yes if you listen to the music it
shouldn't surprise you the lead singer killed himself.

The funny thing is, it works opposite for me, when I'm down
and II listen to Joy Division I will perk up. I guess it has
to do with the fact that there is somebody out there that's
more down as myself, so what I am depressed about.

i was trying not to go here and insult you personally like
you've been doing to everyone else who doesn't agree with
you, but you're getting pretty fucking ridiculous now. i can
understand defending your taste in music (which i didn't ask
you to in the first place, but you seem to be taking this
personally anyway), but when you generalize about an entire
country's musical taste it shows how ludicrous your argument
is.

here's a suggestion: get off the internet and get on with
it. i can honestly say i haven't seen someone so sad as
you've acted in this thread for a long while.

this thread is quite confusing.
i like them, i like few songs a lot. but then i was at a new

seeing all those 15 year olds getting tears in their eyes
put me off of it somewhat. i'll get over it eventually

I just pointed out that you two in this thread, who are the
most vociferous and dismissive of undeniably one of the
greatest bands in the world, both happen to be Americans,
perhaps culturally you don't get a band from the industrial
north of England like I don't really get all the soppy
sentimental fucking country and western music. Yet I'm
hardly talking about ALL America, you egotistical stain.

Mind you, Ian Curtis killed himself just as they were about
to embark on a US tour. You can kind of see his point.

As to someone beign sad, you set the fucking standard with
"I downloaded three songs, this is shit." It beggars belief.
I read the first couple of pages of Joyce... BORING!!!! LOL

an idea (as previously suggested), and perhaps the easiest
way to understand joy division may be to rent '24 hour party

when i was at uni 'dahn sarth', we watched this and everyone
fell in love with joy division. even the southern pansies.

@bogala: I'm not depressed at all, but clearly you seem to
have a problem with connecting to new comers who stumble

time
