industrial north of England is not analogous to areas which
originate country and western music. I'd say Detroit,
Chicago or other working towns would be more in line with
that thought process.

I am not talking about all Americans, jeez louise.. as you
say Detroit, I could say, if I went mental for a minute and
decided Detroit Techno wasn't among the greatest musical
forms ever, what if I said "Oh, I just downloaded three
tracks by Juan Atkins... cheesy strings, weird production,
repetitive, sounds like he's trying to be Chic with C3P0 on
bass ... stoopid track titles, DETROIT SUCKS and anyone who
likes it must be ill" you would, you know, take issue with
that. I'd hope.

yeah, I understand. He wasn't saying England sucks.
Anyway, yeah, he was a bit knee jerk reactionary. Anything
that people hold dear should be given a proper chance. I
think we would all get defensive if some "gimmie an oink
invite" person came here and said Aphex sucked. Shutbug,
have you heard any of Aphex Twins music?

Shit weather in the south, shit, it's still raining, it
rains for 180 months of the year, I've never been so wet. No
wonder I'm miserable. There are pretty girls, a lot of
chunkers mind, but hey.

I always get depressed if I listen to too much JD though,
it's really weird.

@bogala No I haven't, but I'm not bashing it either. I'm not
even judging it. Just because you mention it I'll give it a
try. I'm very open minded. Any suggestions what I should
listen to first?

Wow, this is a funny thread...

Joy Division are amazing. Closer is just one of the most
haunting albums i have ever heard.

All i wanted to say.

I still find it hard to believe that people won't let other
people have opinions without getting shirty.

yes - it's because they have awesome beats

"i just started downloading "closer" and listened to the
first 3 tracks. god damn this is horrible."

how the fuck can somebody, who i assume, is into
experimental electronica, think they can judge an album AT
ALL after listening to only three tracks on an album once?

i'm fucking baffled.

Pleasures and Substance.

Seeing as they only did two albums proper before the singer
commited suicide, both of which you've included, I think
that's not a bad average.

if he likes 2 or 3 out of their 2 proper albums, he likes
100% - 150% of their proper output, thats definetly a pretty
good ave.

the bottom line is joy division is great - they are the link
between the 70's and 80's and it wasnt just closer or
unknown pleasures it was their sound - all of their stuff
ushered in a new sound for music - just look at the decade
that came after them, the 80's - most of the popular stuff /
rock music that came out in the 80's owes its sound to joy
division -that is all.

Damn you. I was trying to lure people into buying ALL (both)
of their albums.

The tracks I have in my current
take-the-bus-to-the-job-rotation:

A means to an end
Discoveries
Twenty four hours
Passover
Love will tear us apart
Day of the lords
She's lost control
..and some New Order tracks too.

while i am definitely a fan of lots of those early singles,
and a fair amount of Unknown Pleasures, i have to say that i
can empathize with the opinion that Closer sounds like shit.
production-wise, to me, it sounds like shit. i don't want to
dismiss it because enough people love it that i want to
believe that i will come around to it eventually, and
furthermore, i don't think i have given some of the songs on
the back end the chance that they deserve. but that would be
mostly because i find it impossible to sit through the first
half.
anyhow, maybe i will try again tomorrow just to respect all
the sanctimoniousness in this thread. i want to like it,
after all. always have.

While Unkown Pleasures was finished when it was pressed
Closer wasn't. It was the first CD i bought and the
shopowner said it was a 'bad' record. I showed the same
reaction as others in this thread e.g. how can you say that?
etc. But, years later i was informed that this album was NOT
finished when it was released. The reason is obvious. Still
i think it is a great album, but you have to understand the
circumstances under which this was released. Something to do
with ice.

haha thanks.

no I can see why you'd be pissed off. it wouldn't be my
place to start crying over the death of Curtis when I wasn't
alive while JD were going. it's a bit, well, I dunno, just
odd.

One of the view bands that I own on both vinyl and CD. I was
given some second hand heavy duty russian pressings when I
was a young lad that have some blokeskis name printed all
over them and they sound amazing. Even after being played on
my piece of shit ancient record player for 10 years they
still sound better than the digital masters. I love the
sound of this band.
