It's not necessarily the obscenity that's the comic device - it's the abuse. I absolutely fucking detest this kind of stand-up humour where the majority of the show is spent verbally abusing the audience. it's just not fucking funny, and yet people lap it up. |

No, that's not what he was saying, and that's not what i'd agree with. What is the point, however, is that I, for one, can't understand why it still strikes so close to the bone with blacks, whereas we, as irish, can laugh off our 400 years of violent oppression and persecution at the hands of the brits. Perhaps it's because they feel that there's still so much subjugation going on, I don't know, but really, it begs me to say "oh come onnn..." because it's more convenient being "oppressed" than it is to be equal. If you're oppressed, you've "got a right to exert your righteous rage upon those who would oppose you." It's also easier to just have one "possible" way of reacting, not choosing for yourself, but choosing what the image of THE BLACK MAN would do; if you're the guy who doesn't react, "the others will look down upon you." of course you should be allowed to speak up if you're actually oppressed and if someone is doing wrong to you, but for fucks sake, I don't feel oppressed by the danish or the swedes just because norway was under their rule ages ago. Also, the best way of ending any kind of discrimination isn't moaning about it all the time. If you put more focus on it, you're more likely to make people think about the difference than if you don't. It's an easy pun for any comedy show (Mad TV has used it a thousand times); you know the skit with the black man thinking everything anyone says to him is racism? That's self-stigmatising, and not fucking helping. Helping would be not reacting to the use of the word nigger by white people, but rather the concept; there's a difference if I say nigger right now for instance, I wouldn't necessarily mean anything by it other than black man (or, wait. is that "african american?"). We're all mostly able to use context to grasp the what people are saying regardless of what words they're using. |
