I had a slight afterthought, too - both myself and my friend are from the republic.. If we went up to a totally polarized part of Belfast, say, and started shouting "Come out ye fenian bastards" or something equally idiotic and incendiary, i'm sure we'd be promptly chaperoned down a quiet laneway and relieved of our kneecaps. But you're right, i need to witness the current racial tension in america first-hand before saying 'they should get over it'. |

the point isn't that I want to use the word or something the point is that if you want something to change (the meaning of the word nigger, for instance), you have to start with yourself, and that's what they've done. However, you can't let it end with yourself. If people were allowed to use it, and people could say "that's my nigger!" like it's something good, something honouring the person you're talking about, then why not? If someone saves a child and his mates go "that's my nigger!" and they're all praising him, and his friends are white, should he take offence at them using the word nigger? NO! Because that will only keep the negative charge of the word alive. If he accepts the praise as praise regardless of what words it comes in, he and everyone else would be better off. If the word nigger is kept alive in this charged and unstable state, that just makes it easier for racist assholes to hate on "niggers" just as it makes it easier for soldiers in a war to kill Charlie and Ali and the Krauts instead of persons. |

oh, btw a guy I know had been living in ireland for a while, somewhere outside of the northern conflict-filled part, and he said it was all like routine with the terror reports on the television? Like, the news anchor would go "riots in belfast" and everyone would just be "lalala, time to make dinner, lalala." If you weren't living up there, that is. truth? |

sure, that's not how it is, but I'm saying that's how it should be, and even if I can't really be bothered to start some organisation for the de-negativisation of the word nigger, I just hope some of the americans on here could pick up on the idea or some crap like that. and yeah I have to say we and them, but that distinction here only refers to those who would not let white men use the word nigger and those who would. Erm, depends whom he was hanging around i guess. It was quite routine, i mean there were times even i can remember when there were bombings almost every day, and for most of my childhood i can remember the news covering sectarian violence (mostly punishment beatings and shootings and so on) pretty much every night.. and that was nowhere near as bad as the 70s. So yes it was totally routine and constant, but my parents never blocked it out or acted apathetic towards it, and neither did i.. they were pretty horrible times.. sure a friend of mine, at age 11, got chased down a street on a day-trip to belfast by grown men (about 25-30 years old), throwing rocks and missiles at him because they overheard his accent and copped that he was from down south. madness. |

In america it annoys the shit out of me that 95% of all black comedians bash Whites and really any other race to no end. yet (not including kramers act) when a white person comments on a black person in there set in a negative way it all the sudden "is hurting the black community". It's fucking bullshit. I also can't stand that the majority of blacks in america dont like being called black but when it comes to scholarships they put it out there like it was gameday.. Or when they did something to fuck up it all the sudden becomes an issue of race.. I've never heard of a black person "not wanting to be called black". You also have to admit, black people are definitely in a different situation than Kramer is, though I would agree that it is a little counterproductive concerning the goal of removing stereotypes (can't happen, but we can try, eh?) |

You see, now that is funny...well, at least not upsetting. ghost That's the stupidest racial slur I've ever heard. I wonder why whites are usually so cavalier about such things. Now if it's whites of different cultures insulting each other, I suppose that changes the dynamic. But when it's a white/black thing then it's different. It's as if a "white" person has some strange ability to obliterate "colored people' with racial insults rather than the other way around. Yeah, history has a lot to do with the impact of the N-word, but for it to carry so much weight now is ridiculous. I've wondered, just out of curiousity, is it possible for one race to be inferior to another? Seriously, on a genetic level. Seeing all the mayhem concerning whites and "people of color" makes me think some things I'd rather not. But can it be true. If I were superior to others that were different, I'd not care much about their insults. Blacks really need to get off this "overcoming" trip and start achieving. This has got it right I think. |

As for my race, I couldn't give a shit about it. It's freeing not to care about the color of your skin and the people it's traced back to. I shit on the heritage, the langauge, and the undue obligation it seems I must have for a people from another country and their culture. I'm American, and that's it. |

Because it is made a point of pride by others of my race for no suitable reason. That I must be cognizant of a constant struggle that I don't see and that I must pay homage to a people and their culture that I've never known and never will. civil rights movement for blacks in america: 50s and 60s civil rights movement for catholics in northern ireland: 60s-90s, with a hell of a lot more violence than the black civil rights movement i don't know.. i think it's fairly justified to say "get over it". however - there still seems to be a lot of racism in america (just look at that completely insane killing of the black dude on his wedding day a couple of nights ago) .. to do this whole issue justice i'd need to write a lot more,and a lot more cohesively about it. at least the blacks were never pitchcapped. or had to suffer cromwell. or the black and tans. the kkk are nothing compared to those fuckers. |
