Seriously, don't try to outwit the Burroughs. You can't even
begin to catch up.

I'm just glad to see two Bill Burroughs threads (albeit with
some crossover) at the Top of XLT.

i'm not making any references to stereotypes at all, and
this is no misconception.

the proof is there for all to see: americans are habitually
shit at speaking/typing english.

Do it! MAKE IT SO! I'll give you some to go on with

Saying "I guess.." before they say anything, DON'T THEY
"KNOW" ANYTHING????
Putting "z" in words where an "s" was fine.
And then refering to that "z" as a "zee"!!!!
Saying "jelly" when they mean "jam"!!!!!
Rebranding brutal occupation and violation of human rights
as "democracy", CRAZY"!!!!
"Punk Rock" when they mean "third rate school bands"
Fanny when they mean Arse
Bum when they mean Tramp
Sounding stupid when they say "Bloody..."
Having big hair and white teeth
I've just lapsed into bashing Americans

i actually wonder sometimes if some of the differences in
spelling and grammar that americans use are deliberately
instigated at some point in history by a nationalistic
american who just 'wants america to do things its own way,
not like those limey fucks'.

I'm not an expert but I think the root of it is dumb,
obnoxious teenagers on the internet.

fleetmouse: oh, I figured you had just typoed and I was
searching for some deeper banality that the word might
represent for you. Like when people say "indeed." That
bothers me.

Yes; They did actually do this. Read up on the Romantic
period and it'll explain it.

The popular belief is that America's spelling of certain
words is the correct, old fashioned way (IE it would have
been the same in Britain, had we not changed it). What they
neglect to mention is that when America was first settled,
these changes had already occured and they used British
English spelling/grammar. Once they became interested in
independence, they regressed their language (effectively
adopting bits of old English) in an attempt to develop their
own identity/culture (as was the "done thing" in the western
world at the time).

What I want to see is acknowledgement from each and every
American that this phrase does, in fact, mean exactly the
opposite of the use for which it is intended, and that it is
a silly phrase and is only used because 'it's just a phrase
they learned' without ever considereding its actual
meaning.
And I want them to do it here, in this thread. Before the
weekend.

Whilst we're on the subject, how about "it's the same
difference" being used to mean, "it's the same"?

"The same difference" is a really esoteric phrase and
there are only a handful of occassions where it can be used
correctly. For example,
Question:
"Which should we use, we've only got the 12mm or 0.47 inch
shims?"
Answer:
"It's the same difference; they're both 1mm too large."

Quite how it entered common usage (at all, let alone with
its current bastardised meaning) is beyond me.

"i could give a toss"

-very good rockenjohnny from perth (australia), that's
another nice succinct way of illustrating the foolish
burger-eaters' error.

americans might like to look up the word "succinct" while
we're here.

and don't re-spell it "succenct" or something.

Brass globe spirits cabinets are the business. I am trying
to convince my girlfriend that one would look good in our
dining room. She wants a standard wooden cabinet instead. Do
you have any advice on how I could convince her that the
globe is the better choice?

Another, mild, irritation is when someone types "of" instead
of "have", as in "I could of guessed".
