well 8 listens in i have to say that if you don't over analyse it or deconstruct it - just let it be and let it play - it is quite good fun in places.... like a happy 16 year old squarepusher
i bet he has just had a baby or something
mind you nalord saw richard regressing somewhat too....

imo, the album is plenty of very good tracks, and the two you say are not the best ones...
what about plonitus or circlewave (incredible growing and full of beauty) or orient orange (an amazing 'ambient' tune)?

bought it today, sounds great. definitely more focus on the melody, less focus on the drums. it seems that he's lost some sort of anger or something. it's less...negative sound music.

First off I am glad for anyone who likes this album, because it is well produced and I could see how a lot of people would have fun with it. But I'm unable to listen to it without resistance. I should also preface by saying that I did not like DYKSP, or Ultravistor, or most of his older stuff. I love Go Plastic! though.
track by track: Hello Meow: D+...too cheesy, the beat is boring even when the breaks kick in. I'm just not gettin down with this bass in the third section of the song either. I could see myself liking this when I first got into this sort of music, but I feel I've "moved beyond" the cheesy sound (sorry I know that sounds pretentious... forgive me).
Theme From Sprite: D+...Can't say I like this one much either. I like the sound of the wispy piano notes in the background.. but everything in the foreground is one again... boring :(... too upbeat for a "lounge" track imo.
Bubble Life: D-... I can't stand this one. I wan't more beatwork and much less bass guitar.
Planetarium: C+... This one is a little better. An interesting beat at least, nice rich bass, then the melody kicks in and it sounds a little dated and cheesy... it's decent until you realize its repeating itself for 6:00 minutes...
Vacuum Garden: A-... smooth, smooth ambience. It's like a gas cloud of metal... very ethereal. It sounds like a few seperate tones all lock up together and then start to rise in pitch together. Really good ambient track. It only gets the minus because it dosent fit at all with the rest of the tracks on this album.
Circlewave 2: F... The bass guitar is not an instrument that touches me emotionally at all. Especially jazz style bass guitar. I can tell he's trying to say something deep but it's just not working for me at all.
Cronecker King: F.. Nothing worth saying about this one.
Rotate Electrolyte: C... I like the begninning and ending... the middle is super super cheesy. It's just videogame music.

Welcome to Europe: C+... It's basically the same as the rest of the tracks, but the quick beat keeps me locked down and the cheese in the high pitched soloing is toned down to a point where it dosent annoy me as much. It's still not a track that would keep me coming back to the album.
Plotinus: C+...Well I like the slightly off "knock knock knock knock knock" a lot. Very autechre. But autechre would have made this with a quality that touches on some deeper emotion you cannot place. All this touches on emotionally is annoyance at the idea that it should be a cheesy videogame soundtrack.
The Modern Bass Guitar: B-... this track has some of the sharp bite that Go Plastic! had. The melody works here because the song is more aggressive, it's an attack of rhythm and funk. Cool beatwork. See I knew Tom could do it... he's got skills, we just differ in taste.
Orient Orange: F... I would have liked this if it didn't try and use percussion. A 5 year old could play the first part of this on the drums with no problem. The hi-hats quickly become annoying and I just want to turn this one off more then any other song on this album.

The problem with this kind of music (as with any kind really, except this this one is more prone to elitism than some others) is that any progenitors of it are trapped by their own successes.
If a genre fails to move on it's lambasted for being a dead and it's artists for failing to continue to innovate, yet if it does progress, or vary, or the artists change tack, they are equally derided for not doing exactly what the fans want. So who can win against that? Just do what you want and screw what other folks want.
"IDM" fans bang on about being so open-minded because their music typically runs counter to the popular mainstream but really they can be just as stuck in a rut as anyone else.
static!

it sounds like tom let his brother write the melodies. if only he'd chosen less "wanky" (perfect description) sounds. 8 years ago i probably would have loved it, but after a few listens i feel like their is nothing too fascinating in this album. ssdd.
