oooh dear

"Consequently I shall not insist that a Christian must
believe in hell."

I heartily disagree

My parents are practicing (my mother, at least) christians
and believe neither in a heaven nor a hell.

heaven and hell is an essential part to christianity though.
if one picks and chooses which bits they want to believe in
then they are effectively creating their own religion.

things change over time. heaven and hell aren't an essential
part of christianity. they're an essential part of
catholicism, though.

But for the successful efforts of unbelievers in the
past, I could not take so elastic a definition of
Christianity as that. As I said before, in olden days it had
a much more full-blooded sense. For instance, it included he
belief in hell. Belief in eternal hell-fire was an essential
item of Christian belief until pretty recent times. In this
country, as you know, it ceased to be an essential item
because of a decision of the Privy Council, and from that
decision the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of
York dissented; but in this country our religion is settled
by Act of Parliament, and therefore the Privy Council was
able to override their Graces and hell was no longer
necessary to a Christian.

I think that's a fairly decent jusitification for him to
refuse to insist that a Christian must believe in hell.

No doubt it's stuff that you, as an Englishman just into
University, should know.

And, in any event, what he does by not expanding the
criteria of "Christian person" to include an imperative that
they believe in hell, is to factor more people into the set
of "christian".. It's making the term less specific, and
hence his argument more difficult to prove.
