to do a release of material from those same sessions though,
kind of like a remix/outtake thing.

this writer singer explained the book job to me

he said it's not a justification of us having to take crap
from god (over a bet with satan) but on the contrary it's a
protest of man against the ways of god. singer said we're
perfectly entitled to be pissed at god. this view is much
better than just believing 'the lord works in mysterious
ways' which means you have to take crap because you you're
dumb and don't understand anyway. you don't have to be that
way and you don't have to feel repentant all the time either

Bertrand Russell was a fucking paradox. For instance
russell's paradox spurned many advancements in set theory
(the move was already on..), and his solution was type
theoretic.

HOT

Argh this is just like my A-level Philosophy of Religion
module and I presume just like my degree.
He presents some interesting points, but nothing
groundbreaking or too original I don't think. I feel that he
could've strengthened his arguments by using some more
original ideas, although it is given in an easy to
understand, digestable way, which makes it a good lecture

better texts which have been written about on religion.
Eg: Theologico-political treaty by Spinoza.

I'm afraid to admit that by the time I'd got to that bit I'd
got bored so just skim read the rest. Sorryyy. But upon
further reading, yes you are correct, he just kind of sweeps
it under the carpet more than anything else.

Big: don't be silly

don't be silly? i was going to raise that point. :O I think
it's valid.. Unless there are some philosophers with the
same views as he who lived a *considerable* time before
Russell.

Drunken Mastah: Why do you say that?

The section on the natural-law argument is slightly vague,
i'll have to re-read it some day when i've actually slept
the night before, but the section on the argument from
design hits the nail on the head..

Lifeforms adapt to their surroundings. Read Voltaire's
remark which he quotes again. I think it sums the inanity of
the intelligent design argument up perfectly.

also being an atheist was still a big deal then, so a
lecture about it was relevant because it advanced this new
idea or at least the arguments behind it

the problem with the natural law argument is that he says
that if god gave the natural laws on a whim, he is not
subject to law, and as something, then, isn't subject to
natural law, your "train of natural law is interrupted"
without that actually making any impact to the argument one
way or the other. He then, when handling the argument that
god made everything to create the best world, he says that
this would require god to use reason, and thus be subject to
some law, but reason isn't in itself an external force or
law; there are no universal guidelines for reason and even
if there were, his statement that you gain nothing from
having god in the equation misses the target, as you'd still
need an actuator.

and in the argument from design part, he tries to dismiss it
because the world isn't perfect, but who said it's built to
be perfect, and who said that humans weren't given a control
over themselves? the way I seem to remember it, the world is
a place where he put humans and gave them free will to see
if they were willing to live good lives or something.
