HAHAHA

what would you swap a box of analords for?

"definitely submarine ammo as it's almost impossible to
get."

:)

honest interview? Don't be foolish. Maybe some answers are
honest, like favorite music and stuff.

I realise there are nice bits of the interview. He is funny,
but I was hoping for some honest answers for once about his
studio cause I enjoy learning about how music is made.

you can clearly see in his interviews what he means..when he
jokes about it and when he says something for real. he is
just like any other person..if the reporter asks a question
you answer in a funny way, why would aphex answer
seriously..it would just looks silly and make him look like
a more serious person than he really is. i really like the
way he gives interviews..he just shows he is as much down to
earth guy as anyone else.

want

Asking for a kit list in a future music article is not a
funny question.
Luke Vibert is honest and laid back at the same time. He
said he uses Reason. Thats almost embarrasing. My opinion
is aphex likes keeping secrets. That's ok. Makes him more
interesting even though it is frustrating.

Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

why would he give his kit list? that's the list interesting
thing i could read about. it's not about what you use to
make music it's more about what goes on in your head.

Cause its a future music article. Its a magazine about music
instruments. I like reading about gear and people's opinions
of software and synths.

why would he care about that?

surely his music doesn't like it does because of the

im sure he would tell it but i think he thinks it's a silly
topic to talk about because it isn't really about what he is
doing. it's a technical thing for the nerd kids to get
excited about at most.

I see bogola's point, though.

the whole "I'm a cheeky-chappy-making-music"-thing has
gotten tired a long while ago. and he certainly comes out
with quite some bollocks to reasonable questions, not just
the "comical" ones.

all his interviews seem a bit the same though, "what
equipment have you been using lately", "how many tracks do
you have lying around unreleased", "what do you think about
all the people who try and imitate you", etc.

you could say that's the interviewer's problem, and you'd be
half right. when the subject of your interview is being
purposefully obtuse, it becomes kind of uninviting to ask
him things, so people tend to stick to the simple, more
straightforward questions.

I get the feeling that it isn't so much which questions get
asked, but in what kind of mood Aphex is. and the mood
almost always seems "I don't care about interviews", which
is fine, but his interviews always keep on the surface,
never going very deep. and I think it's a pity, I think he's
a smart bloke who could have some interesting things to say.

but that's the thing, there don't seem to be the right
questions to ask him. everything's a laugh to him. fine, but
it doesn't make for very interesting reading, I think.

if i was asked question like people want to ask him i would
most definitelly find it silly as well. you can see that guy
obviously knows little something about music and related
stuff and yet he gets asked types of questions; what do you
think of people making music like you, stuff about his gear,
you went analogue what's with digital, what software do you
use and blah blah..

i only read like two interview that ahd at least a couple of
decent questions..

Points: 47414 Status: Moderator | Followup to tolstoyed: #01935922

but that's my point - that's not just the interviewer's
fault, it's also his, it's also because of how he presents
himself. he seems hard to please, so people tend to go for
the straightforward stuff.

there's probably hardly anything you could ask him about his
music that he wouldn't find a silly and/or boring question.

I don't think he likes talking about his music, really.

Points: 50073 Status: Moderator | Followup to qrter: #01935924

perhaps..dunno. but i've read/heard him talk about his music
before and it was interesting..if the questions were asked
right. more about what he gets out of music what he strives
for..and not so much about details of how he makes it. there
are very few interviews around and most of them were made
when he was still very young and now interviewers just take
those as examples.
you don't see people asking lets say john cage what sort of
string he used in certain piece..it's just silly.

The questions are the same. The tank? Who cares. Others get
asked the same questions and they answer them honestly.
Richard probably talks about software and synths and whats
your favorite this or that. I bet he gets into it like any
other geek. He relies on the opinion of other experts too I
would guess. He's secretive for many reasons and I would bet
its not cause he finds explaining his studio silly or beside
the point. I think he isn't forthright because he feels it
gives him an edge. If everyone used what he used he would
get copycat artists. Even if gear is irrelevant I don't
think he believes that.

ofcourse that's one of the reasons too..why would you want
to make same music aphex makes anyway? i don't get it. i
really don't. he is not just some nerdy bedroom music maker
like a lot of his fans who masturbate to different sounds.
he actually cares about music i belive.

Most people care about music. He's just one of the few that
is actually good at making it.

when i say care about music i mean he is interested in it.
he is learning about music producers from the past..getting
to know their music, why they made stuff like they have, he
probably isn't satisifed before he knows the essence of it.
and most of his followers seem to mostly wait what he would
come up with..not interested in why he came up with it but
how he produced certain sounds. it's quite sad really.

Thats funny. I thought of that too. Aphex doesn't have
another Aphex. He has dockstader, derrick may, Iannis
Xenakis to figure out.

funny how Future Music couldn't even get the thing they were
talking about right...

"So, on to the CHOSEN LORDS set of vinyl..."

"What would you swap a boxed set of CHOSEN LORDS for and
why..."

what makes it kinda more worrying is that RDJ didn't correct
them on their blatant fuck up - they were obviously
referring to the Analord stuff. i know if it was me in the
same position i'd be telling them "look, get the fucking
release right else i'm out of here"

or maybe i'm just a pedantic prick

"I admire Cage very much, as a man, but what is chance? If
you think you are using chance in his way, you may simply be
acting unrationally. The intuition of Cage is dangerous, a
style and mentality of mystico-romantic improvisation, which
agitates ignorant souls'.
Iannis Xenakis.

straight up.

It was a boring interview mainly because 'future music'
magazing is shite + it was an e-mail interview which are the
worst as there's no 'oxygen' there. You can reply to a
question days later and edit etc. after looking up 'early
sequencing' on google. I think a chat show style video
interview would be more fitting and stimullating for nerds.

They give cd''s attatched to their magazine titled '1000

very well written, afx needs a new media strategy (and the
media should really come up with some new questions)

tolstoyed: of course people want to know about the gear,
because they believe the gear is important for interesting
results. but as you wrote, the gear isn't really the whole
thing. some gear makes certian sounds, but it may end up as
crap anyway (it mostly does, even in professional music
making - making lots of music combined with careful
selection is probably a solution)

I really liked when Future Music gave the readers info on
what gear to use if they wanted certain artist's sound -
what drummachines to use and stuff like that. When they came
to Ae they couldn´t really get any clear answers because
there were no presets or common sounds easy to spot. :D
"most sounds are probably custom made" fm stated. Way to go,
Ae! I like original music.
(many years later Ae revealed their extensive kit list)
