you could write a story about that section couldn't you :)
that doesn't seem to happen with most new music if you know
what i mean :-)

I don't think it's purity so much, nor innoncence, but
cheeky yes, and bold, and inventive. Now things are "arch"
or "referential", which isn't their fault, it's that
culture's accelerated. The 90s should have lasted 30 years.

There must be a program to spit out "Lush melodies" and
"Fucked up beats". I think Iran's developing it under the
guise of their nuclear Reaktor.

nonono, i don't want to accuse anyone for being guilty of
anything... i just don't want to become all nostalgic yet or
better: i don't want to be lead by nostalgic emotions by
judging actual artists' outputs. they draw their influences
from their heroes as those did with theirs and so on, and
it's ok. i only think that, just as it is ridiculous to
think artistic relevance is boostable by "virtuosity" and
more and more "complicated beats" in this actual case it's
no better to just take a simplistic approach just for the
sake of itself, as a mere raction.
like i said, people should just do what really "concerns"
them and no matter what form they choose, i think it's
feelable, through all genres. sometimes i even feel such
"authenticity" from artists but still i just can't be moved
by it because it's not my "concern" but still can appreciate
it for what it is... (not that often, tho ;P)

i used the term fully aware that it has become part of the
idm-cliché... i also don't like the ending of the track as
much as the first half

yes i think i do know what you mean... of course it's always
only some special artists swimming on a sea of mediocre ones
that'll make it in the end... but as for me, i could never
really point out what generally makes an artist special to
me... often it's just mere personal reasons, foe example
certain memories in conjunction with certain albums etc...
and why not

The Problem

Rock n Roll = Sex
Heavy Metal = Used to = Sex now = Dungeons and Dragons
House = Sex
UK Garage = Stabbing someone outside Tulse Hill station
Punk = Sex (with a dippy bird with a prong through her
labia)
IDM = Discussing what computer program or antiqudated bit of
old Tandy kit it was banged out on.

So. What you want us to do is make a list of things that YOU
like? Now, that's hard.

If "last couple of years" is, say from 2002 to now, I can
list albums I like; Geogaddi, Draft, Ultravisitor, Vatican
Nitez, the last album from Deathprod, Clickits, Porn Sword
Tobacco, Bola's Gnayse and Four Tet's (OMFG) Rounds. I'm
sure I can list 20 albums I think is good

BTW: Posts like
"it's just that electronic music what it used to be
anymore..." and "But, then (2001-2002 or so.) shitty retro
guitar rock took over everything."
makes you sound like grumpy old men. Get a grip

I think the biggest evolvement in electronic music the last
years have been in the field of acoustic-electronic, laptop
folk and such. Music made by combining electronics and
acoustic instruments, samples of acoustic instruments and
vocals.

just to clarify, i'm not at all worried that electronic
music isn't progressing or that there isn't anything
interesting going on anymore. i do feel that there are a lot
of areas that have stagnated somewhat, but that is in no way
unique to this type of music at this historical juncture.

i think electronics are being used to
interesting/entertaining ends still, but for me this is
primarily happening in areas where it isn't often pure
"electronic music" perse, particularly not as i understand
it in the context of this thread.

Yeah, he ain't trip hop. He is good, I'm not a massive fan,
but I can appreciate he's a talented guy, definately.

Prefuse 73 has been the main electronic artist of the past 5
years, for me. And his music definately = sex, unlike 99% of
idm, as DBelch pointed out.

haha, the heavy metal bit is a good one!
this ridiculously strong emphasis on thechnial matters isnt
alone a problem of electronic music, though...
ever talked to rock/metal musicians (especially
guitar-players)
about their art? they're always glad to find someone to talk
about which instruments/adjustments/amps/doublebassmachines
do produce the best/loudest/classic/bluesy blah blah
sound... *yawn*

as with punk... i've made experiences ironically close to
the actual discussion here.
people suddenly wanting to sound like their heroes from 77
again in search for DA TRUE SPIRIT OF PUNK... jeesh.
in this case it's often even more disgusting, since also
ideas of "political" relevance are deeply connected
with the aesthetic discussion of punkrock. so there they sit
in front of their computer screens, with "dirt
under their fingernails which they placed there with silver
tweezers" and self-ripped and cut jeans pants, flaming on
internet forums about who is more punk, who's got the proper
soundtrack to "revolution"... and in the end the one who's
able to mindlessly paraphrase the most neo-marxist/frankfurt
school-thinkers "wins"... yuk.
and those emo whinos on myspace are also very well
representatives of punk 2006. it's just over, so what.

There's a good book by Simon Reynolds called Postpunk 78-84
which basically says punk was over by 78 and all the smart
original players had already moved onto other things like
synthpop, industrial, art rock, dub, funk or whatever. Being
in a noisy guitar band in 2006 is the least "punk" thing I
can think of.
