not really... ;-)
maybe it was the vibe that I was in at the time, dunno...
it's interesting though, I think Cannibal Holocaust didn't
really affect me as much as I Spit On Your Grave. Maybe I'm
making differences in disturbing violence and "ridiculous"
violence...
Hence the fact that I'm not sure if you saw the unedited
version... :-)

Nightmare on Elmstreet 1-6(and new nightmare), Evil Dead
1-3, Braindead and Bad Taste is the best!!!

Anyone seen 120 days of sodom? Also Called Salo.. That is
one sick fucking movie. Watch it and your life will change
forever. Take a look here: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0073650

I liked the Friday the 13th films, Freddy Krueger....and I
like most Stephen King films, Pet Cemetary was good, as was
Sleepwalkers. Nightbreed is another one of my favourites,
although not strictly the scariest!

hmm, I used to love gore movies like Dead Alive, Zombie,
Evil Dead II, etc. but don't really get into them too much
now. I'd rather see something that is truly scary.
Although I have a hard time defining what that actually is,
like I consider 'the Birds' a genuinely scary flick but it's
more the suspensefulness of it than anything that's scary
about it. Also, I consider the Thing scary, as well, but I
think that's just suspense as well. So what do you guys
think makes a movie genuinely scary and not just
suspensful??? I've seen most of the films you guys have
mentioned and nothing thats been brought up is something I'd
consider scary. I'd be interested in hearing what you guys
thought because I've actually been thinking about this for
quite some time. I think what it might be is that things
that we'd be scared of in the society around us (terrorism
for example) blown out of proportion are what make great
scary flicks. That's why movies like the monster movies
were so popular back in the 30's-50's; because it was
something that didn't exist in our society but had the
potential of possibly existing and thats what made it so
frightening. Sure, Vampires don't exist but the thought
that something like Dracula actually might exist walking
along the masses and blending in is a frightening thought.
That doesn't really fly now, though, because our society has
became much more sophisticated than it was back then, movies
about that sort of thing are basically just action flicks
now (Godzilla or Anaconda for example). eh, at any rate,
some movies that were truly unsettling to me would be:

The Haunting: (the original one) that movie scared me out of
my witts because of the eerie atmosphere to it and way it
slowly builded to the end with the one room and no one would
go in it.

Eraserhead: again, eerie atmosphere but I think what was so
scary about it was more the psychological aspect of it than
anything actually physical. the Shining was the same way.

Night of the Living Dead: I know its

damnitt, it cut me off.

been mentioned already but it was good, too.

the birds: already mentioned but I think it's a very scary
movie. food for thought: the last part of the birds where
the people are stuck in the house with the birds coming at
the house from all directions was a direct inspiration to
Romero to create Night of the Living Dead.

yeah, i really dug The Birds - i like the old hitchcock
films - as i said earlier, the robert wise "the haunting" is
VERY VERY good - a MUST. there does seem to be a lack of
psychologically scary films these days - frankly, BWProject
was only good in the last 30 seconds, and i actually
preferred the trashier sequel...well i will say more when
someone else posts.

the langoliers is GREAT to watch when stoned - that
atmosphere is second-to-none :)

oops, sorry Marlowe, I didn't realize you'd already posted
that one, it's a great, though. I love the movies about
haunted houses if they're done right. What is the Haunting
of Hell House about?? I've never heard of that before but
it sounds cool.

ooh, I just thought of another one; Carnival of Souls.
Anyone seen that?? It's really good, about a woman who
survives a car crash that she shouldn't have, only to find
out that a phantom is following her around everywhere she
goes. It has a lot of eerie music in it as well.

i've seen Carnival Of SOuls in Blockbuster, but wasn't sure
whether or not to rent it -- so you recommend it - next time
i see it, i will rent it and hopefully enjoy it :)

for a cult classic, check out BASKET CASE :)

anybody remember Re-Animator and From Beyond? always
enjoyed those...

Basket Case is pretty funny, thou after seeing iy again
after years it doesnt seem to have as much impact, plus the
DVD has better lighting, seems to hurt the dark sleazy mood
of the film.

i saw Alien when i was a kid... the only time i can remember
being really scared.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls isn't really a horror flick,
but if you can sit thru the first hour of the movie, you
will be rewarded with the sickest, sarcatsic, most absurd,
perverted, fucked up ending to any movie ever.

i didn't much like Re-Animator, but i didn't watch it all,
so i'm in much of a position to comment on it.

i will definately seek out BVD -- sounds like a good ending
:) but please, elaborate just a little!

I've heard that the ANimator and re-animator are both really
good, never seen either of them, though. I've seen Basket
Case in the movie store before, never thought much about
renting it. I'll pick it up next time I want some good
gore-splatter fare!!!! hehe, I'm suprised no ones mentioned
the king of the gore genre; HG Lewis. Blood Feast, 2000
Maniacs, Wizard of Gore, all classics!! He's currently in
post-production on Blood Feast II and it should be coming
out sometime this summer. It was filmed around the bottom
of Alabama and the top of FLorida and new a guy that was
going to film school in Mobile, AL who got to work on it.
I'm excited to see what it'll be like, 20 yrs. or more since
the last lewis film and almost 40yrs since Blood Feast. You
can download a trailer for it somewhere on the net, just do
a search on blood feast II on google.

i've seen many and love them highly.

dawn of the dead stands up there with bad taste, cemetery
man, and night of the living dead.

requiem for a dream was rather startling i thought...though
it isnt really a horror movie..
the shining's probably my favorite
event horizon scared me when i saw it in the
theatre...mostly because i was young..and things are always
scarier in the theatre
alien was great..i liked the second one too..but that was
more of an action movie

K, i'm a huge horror fan, i'm surprised i haven't seen:

return of the living dead even mentioned!!!!?!!!!!!!??!?!?!

the first one was great, the sequals surely suck, although 3
was aight.

DAWN OF THE DEAD and Night RULLE!!!!!!!! hands down.
Ramero; was
:( the king at one point. I sure hope Dead Reckoning gets
made. Dawn was sooooo great, i love how it poked fun of
american culture etc...day was a lil weak but really gory
which i loved

can't forget evil dead either...
night of the creeps...jesus, we should create a board just
for this stuff

i saw it more as poop smeared on film, and then 20 or so
people acting all happy over their bowel movement. I don't
think the movie should have been a carbon copy of the game,
but they completely fucked it up, and i can only wait to see
the unfortunate sequal.

What was/is Capcom thinking?? paul anderson should be beaten
with a stick

Return Of The Living Dead Part 3 best horror movie ever?!
The first one kicks its ass....

...I was rewatching Demons the other - great slice of 80s
Italian gore - I mean to buy the sequel some time...

"Zombie 2", which one is that? Zombie Flesh Eaters? It's
hard to keep track, because they all wanted to jump onto
Dawn Of The Dead's coattails (which is called Zombie in some
countries)

And right now, Carrie has burnt down the prom on tv

well, Dario Argento really got on GAR to make Dawn, and
somehow he was allowed to bring it to Europe and edit it to
his liking....His cut has a little less/more gore depending
on which one you've got.

It was released as Zombi 2 in Europe instead of Dawn b/c
(and rumored) that dario wanted all the credit for the click
himself....

on my 20th aniversary ed. of dawn he's even credited as
writting the music w/ goblin...i which i highly doubt he did

aliens
alien 3
event horizon
cube
jacobs ladder

event horizon
sphere (book more than the movie)
prince of darkness
the thing
one or two x-files probaby

Honestly, the messed with me the most was a book called

talented mr. ripley

nah, it's susepense. but it was the most disturbing thing
I've seen in awhile, while remaining somewhat subtle.

for the people who've been mentioning requiem for a dream-
it's all spectacle. just as bad as a horror movie that can
only rely on gore to be scary. the formula was to make a
film that allowed them to show BIG FUCKED UP THINGS on a
degenerative scale thus shocking and thus providing
'memorable entertainment'. cheap, immature filmmaking. it
may be entertaining (depending on the viewer. I was bored),
but it can't be taken seriously. it just can't.

I just brought Requiem for a Dream on video.

Other picks I have would be Audiiton, Hole which is very
good existential thriller/horror, In the Mouth of Madness
(the neo HP Lovecraft), Crash (David Cronenberg) and his
early stuff, David Lynch's Eraserhead (I have yet to sit
through it in a single sitting, its not as much horrifing as
it messes with your sense of timing of realtity itself. Then
there's Ring 2 (havent been able to access the first) which
some freaky stuff down a well

One of the best recent horrors I have seen another film from
New Zealand "Irrefutable Truth About Demons" To me it was
the first true rightful sucessor to the Hell Raiser series.
