Yeah, it's a bit rubbish that no matter how good you are at martial arts, someone with a gun and the willingness to use (and half decent aim) can do you in without any trouble at all. I actually wish we'd never progressed past swords.

i study japanese old style budo. been to japan 3 times to train with the masters. sometimes we wear samurai armour and work with that. Its so far removed from the movies its not funny.
Bruce lee is to martial arts what madonna is to music.... i like to think what i study is to martial arts is what squarepusher is to music.... a whole nother level.

Keys, out of interest, is part of the reason why you aren't a fan his openly non-classical style? I can certainly see the rationale for being anti "taking the bits you like from several styles"; The fact that if everyone did it, within a 100 years there would be no classical styles to borrow from etc. is a valid one.
Talking of which, I'm going back to Judo in a few months time. I'm really looking forwards to it.

I dunno. One of our masters was a local hardman who in his youth had been a very keen amateur boxer and won competitons etc. He could punch obscenely hard (I still shuddering when I remember seeing him punch a 6ft kick bag so hard that it ripped the supporting metal brackets off the wall) and had a typical boxer's build, but still thought that grappling, kicks, limb breaks and pressure points were useful tools in a streetfight.

cerijc....i'm not really anti-what-you said per se. Much of the BL phenonomen just seems like overblown media whorage to me.
I've met martial artists who aren't into such flashiness and quietly learn stuff they need in actual combat or dangerous situations...police, soldiers, mental health peopel ect - jkd and B.L's whole philosophy just seems like a mish mash that feeds off the western misuderstanding, at the time anyway, of the nature of martial arts, based on movies and over-commercialised karate, judo and other such modern sports arts.
Rather than a mish mash, I study an art that evolved through every era of war since the middle ages and was used by combatents during those times to survive aggression. I'm afraid it mightn't look good at all but it gets the job done for those who need it. Nearest i seen to it in film is Bourne identity and Twilight Samurai and a few kurasawa movies.. no flash no high kicks no messing!

Amen to that. A mate (who admittedly is a bodybuilder) only did boxing for six months and could trounce me with my 5 years mixed martial arts experience (and I'm not small).
Keys: Yep, the Bourne fights are pretty realistic. They're like the supposedly new martial arts marketed towards soldiers and police (but really adhereing to the classical principles of simple, effective combat like you described). Utterly devoid of "art", mysticism or flash stuff like jump kicks etc.

the flashiness, BL admitted, was especially for the movies. furthermore, in those days he had to deal with directors who wanted the flashiness. the 'style' he developped was supposed to be as efficient and pragmatic as possible (he called it the style without a style).
anyways, i'm a big fan nothing but respect for the lee-man
