haha, yeah. I wonder what I'd do in the numerous breaks I take in working with stuff instead of surf xlt... I'd probably have written too many pages for my term paper, and woud've had to cut it down.. the way it is now I just reached the max limit of pages; 15.. I could probably have written 40 or so, but that'd make me flunk. I'd also have made 100 times as many tracks and webpages, and I think I'm finishing them at a questionably high rate already... |

yes, I think I disagree there. firstly, I distinguish between making a joke when you know or think (maybe even "could/should expect that" would fit here) someone will think it was disrespectful, which makes it disrespectful, and making a joke when you don't think someone will think it was disrespectful. In the latter case, I wouldn't call the person disrespectful even though someone takes offense. I was under the impression that while my jokes are bad (the way I like them), no-one took offense to anything in any way... monoid is excluded, but he doesn't exist |

and that's the nag - you might not mean it disrespectful, but it still can be disrespectful to someone else, because as bip notes, someone doesn't get your joke. just because you don't think it's disrespectful doesn't automatically mean someone else will think so and also doesn't mean they shouldn't. to give an extreme example, I could make a slew of racist jokes to a black person and mean it as jokes. the basis is still racism and the person might see my jokes as being disrespectful. also, a lot of humour comes from a healthy dose of disrespect, which is what is great about humour, but it still makes something disrespectful. in short I think it's a fallacy to think anything goes if you just say "oh but I was joking". |

well, yes I already said that.. you're not excused for eternity by saying "oh, it was just a joke," but there's a difference between situations where you would expect the person to be insulted (like your example with the black man) and where you do not expect it. you can't just put all responsibility for communicating correctly on yourself; there's an interpreter involved here too. If I was joking and certainly wouldn't imagine anyone would think me to be disrespectful (or even at all serious), and they still interpret it as me being disrespectful, that's their problem, not mine. |
