John Cage's 4'33''

Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 13:00 GMT

The first notes in the longest and slowest piece of music in
history, designed to go on for 639 years, are being played
on a German church organ on Wednesday.

The three notes, which will last for a year-and-a-half, are
just the start of the piece, called As Slow As Possible.

Composed by late avant-garde composer John Cage, who died in
1992, the performance has already been going for 17 months -
although all that has been heard so far is the sound of the
organ's bellows being inflated.

The music will be played in Halberstadt, a small town
renowned for its ancient organs in central Germany.

The first note is due to be struck at 1800 local time (1700
GMT) on Wednesday.

The performance follows a legal case in which composer Mike
Batt was forced to pay a six-figure sum to Cage's
publishers, who accused him of plagiarising a silent piece
of music.

more than any other piece of music i am familiar with,
"4'33" reveals more about the listener than the composer,
because it's almost entirely up to the listener to give it
value. it's like cage held up a mirror to thousands of years
of music and each listener has to look into that mirror and
see...something...anything...what? why?

i think he has offered us a chance to further understand
what music really is.

You cry like a little bitch when redrum suggests things like
that, but you do it when you get the chance. Group attacks
are OK so long as you aren't the target?

I never cried when redrum attacked me, I was just tired to
read all these those insults because I dont understand why
certain people here can't live with the fact that there's
some people they don't like and have to pick on them
therefore with cunty posts.

Anyway the things are changed, my spam is finished, my
english is noticably improved since when I'm using the site
etc etc. Now me and redrum are friends, I chatted a lot with
him in private.

Because I was sitting in a restaurant with John Cage back in
the Autumn of 1951. We were having coffee but ran out of
things to say...anyway we sat quietly for 4 minutes and 32
seconds (I know because I checked my watch) and on the 33rd
second of the 4th minute I said (John lad, isn't it wierd
all the fuckin things you notice when you aren't listing to
a particular subject), he went "Yes, actually that is
genius" and took a pencil from his pocket and scibbled
something on it without letting me see, folded it up and
returned it to the said pocket...Less than a year later
4'32" appears and he gets MY praise.

Sorry I had to get that off my chest.

You can't buy a matter box

It has previously been discussed at length.

i'm improving here so...the emphasis on the
coughing...compare it to the "excessive" use of any
instrument in "idm" -- e.g, 909 in "analord," or 808 in that
"flow coma."

the difference is that in "4'33" it's ALWAYS spotaneous.
"analord" is ALWAYS the same.
