Enjoy.

Contrary to popular belief, this composition is not meant to
be silence. The "music" is the random background noise
generated by the audience or cars outside of farting or
coughing or whatever. So the reaction to the music IS the
music. Like, deep. If somebody walked in off the street with
a trombone and started playing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" would
that be part of the piece or not?

Thats the best part of it. Cage had a brilliant mind.
Example during a book interview he noted how the interviewer
chewed his food and complimented him on it.

That is excellent attention to detail

what IS it with the people that go go classical concerts,
that they always have to cough so excessively after a piece,
and in this case even after what, 2 minutes of 'silence' ?

took you long enough.

why do you always have to be such a cynical tit when i
question something? everything is all oh so obvious for you
isn't it?

If somebody has to cough their lungs out after shutting up
for a couple of minutes, i don't consider that natural human
behaviour.

Try harder because your sarcasm is getting old.

they're not all old and i've noticed younger people cough as
well.

i say higher ticket prices for excessive coughers, and no
more first rank seats.

4 * 60 + 33 = 273 [s]
The absolute zero is around -273,15 centigrade. Deep.

well i guess one way to look at it is that in that setting
with that number of people you are going to have to cough
everynow and again. People do it all the time involuntarly
all the time to the point where you dont notice it.

But when you try to contain body functions for the sake of
the preformance you tend to focus on it for the certain
duration of time. Like when you have an itch of your nose
but you strain not to itch it, it just gets worse until you
finally give in.

I think that its a similar thing here.

-----------------------------

Overall i think this video was one of the best music related
videos i have ever seen ever. I would have loved to have
been there participating in this. The guy was correct...
that tension was amazing! That was the longest bit of time i
have ever focused on silence in a while. I loved where the
conductor wiped his brow and gave everyone a chance to
chuckle. That was a relief!

This video will be moving to my personal archieves!

Also in my personal opinion some of those coughs were
excessive for the sake of a joke. Because it was ok between
the piece to make noise and it almost appeared as a small
running joke. Like some of those people were just messing
around. It brought a smile to my face non the less!

yes you have some good points there. I enjoyed watching this
as well, but i would enjoy it more if people tried their
absolute best to just try and virtually disappear by sheer
concentration, instead of waiting for the cough break.

I see what you mean but i think the break is important as it
sections off the performance which was made for aeperate
parts. I like that destinction in between the parts.

I'd also recommend to have a look at the site from which the
video was taken. A vast archive of music/video
avant-garde, ethnopoetics, and outsider arts.
Whatever that means.

This is the best quote i've read in a while

"As the practices of sound art continue to evolve,
categories become increasingly irrelevant, a fact UbuWeb
embraces. Hence, our artists are listed alphabetically
instead of categorically."

maybe you should stick your head in a vacuum of air to hear
what silence really sounds like.

offline swears from junk sleep on 2005-10-13 13:16 [#01748918]
Points: 6474 Status: Lurker

No, people really do think that the silence is the music.
Obviously on a messageboard were people are a little bit
more musically "educated", this isn't the case.

I think that one must keep in mind

a) why cage wrote the composition
b) how cage thinks about music/sound

I this this quite pertains to this all (imo)

"Which is more musical: a truck passing by a factory or a
truck passing by a music school?"

and the answer is:

Points: 27325 Status: Lurker | Followup to virginpusher: #01748926

That should read "i think that this quote"

i should take time to reread what i type sometimes.

lol

anyways the answer is quite simple as there is no answer.
Its all up to the person who hears the variations of sounds
and how one percieves it. The distinction between noise,
sound and music is made based on a variance of opinions.

why do you always have to whine about everything?

"oooh those people are coughing!! OOH I HATE THEM!!"
"oooh you didn't use lazy_link!! OOH I HATE YOU"

etc. etc.

haven't you ever noticed that you get wound up over the

so please don't come to me and say I am too negative - I'm
