Most people i hang around dont know me nor havent met me before. Due to my lifestyle. Then again i say offensive stuff all the time. Racism would make like 1% of jokes. Most material has to do with child rape and dead baby jokes. |

VP, you do not need to experience the crime in order to experience the attitude behind it. As for the use of nigger between black people, I agree that there is a double standard. But usually, black people use is the same way Europeans would use 'mate'. If this were the same meaning behind the word when most white people use it, we wouldn't be having this disussion. |

you're not required to be sensitive to anyone else's feelings, and you're entitled to treat any subject you wish with irreverence. but civility and respect for others' feelings makes the message board a better place. you keep hearing it mentioned all the time because the wounds from those events are still healing. you think about the social conflicts as the past, but in fact they continue. the african americans who do talk about it are individuals, and not representatives of a racial collective that thinks and feels the same way. surely there are both rational and irrrational perspectives. surely there are individuals who relish and exploit their status as perpetual victim. one personal example, i taught at an elementary school and a high school in the early nineties that had only just been integrated *because of a law suit*. up until that time, the african-americans in this city were sent to shitty, underfunded schools, while the whites went to good, well-funded schools. less than twenty years ago, and it only ended because of intensive legal action to force the change. change comes very slowly. |

I'm just trying to illustrate that nigger has historical ties to racism that are hard to cut. I could care less about the word. Words in themselves are meaningless. Its the attitue behind its use I worry about. And since that historical attitude is one of comtempt for an 'inferior' race I get a bit jumpy when it's used. I know that guys like virginpusher don't have that attitude so I'm not going to worry about it anymore. |

i don't mean any disrespect for anyone..not in real life nor message boards. and i like to think everyone else is like that as well, therefore i just can't be offended because i know they don't really mean anything. they're going to heal for ever if they keep being mentioned all the time..why think of all that shit that went on if there are other things we can look up to.. "the african americans who do talk about it are individuals, and not representatives" well, it goes the same for us. im sure there are some white people who use word nigger offensivly, but we're not all like that. especially not europeans, and this is a european messagge board :) i don't know how to answer your last paragraph though as i haven't experienced it myself. im sure there are differences between whites and blacks in the states, and other parts as well actually - i get very sad when i see young africans when i visit italy for instance. they just seem to not fit somehow so they always hang out in groups..it's very unlikly you'll see a black and white person walking together on a street in most of the europe.. i imagine it's kind of the same in the states. white and black people to be separated, and that's just silly..but i can't help but not to think that they sort of prefer it that way for some reason.. |

sorry, i should have been a bit clearer. when i said "you," i actually meant "an individual." i didn't intend to single you out, and would consider you one of the most respectful individuals on the board. i was only trying to illustrate why, even though someone should not overreact to opinions that are expressed on a message board, it's still in everyone's best interests to be respectful. to add some balance, i have had my life threatened twice, unprovoked and because i'm "white," by african-american individuals. i was also formally accused (falsely, i might add, but i suppose you'll have to take my word for it) of racism by an individual i supervised at a job. i got a million stories! : ) to clarify my last paragraph, the problem was not necessarily that blacks went to one school and whites went to the other school. the problem was that the "black" facility was underfunded, and the "white" facility was well funded. these are public schools, supported by tax money. |

Racism is racism, stereotype or not. The only reason something becomes a stereotype is because it crops up a lot. And racism did used to crop up a lot more than it does these days. Perhaps it's a mistake to become more relaxed about the terms which had previously been so offensive. Maybe we're not ready to relax yet. Though in some ways we're less relaxed with regard to politcial correctness. I mean what terms are we allowed to use? Is "black people" acceptable? "African American"? Those ethnically not African American may be offended by that. You get to the point where you find you can't even talk about the subject without stepping on toes. Like here. Now. |

heh, i unerstood that last paragraph, it's just that i forgot of what i was trying to say i suppose. it sucks it have to be like that, but perhaps that would change if black people would try and fit in with the rest..but it isn't only about black people really..it goes for any race in america. it's just extremly silly to see for me all those various communities keeping for them selves instead of trying to live together.. i bet everyone living in states has a lot of stories to tell..someone i know was working on some big ship as a waiter i think and he was working with a lot of african americans. he was all freaked out about it when he came back, saying how careful he had to be around them because they would accuse him of being racist even if that was the last thing he intended to do..and he's not a racist by any means..no one here is. |

Tolstoyed, believe me when I say that I don't live in the past. The fact that my recent ancestors were slaves does not excuse me from personal failure or allow me to blame white people in this country for my problems. At the same time, the history between these two groups of people cannot be ignored if we want to understand the current racial tension overall between the two. |

well, i can't understand it since i haven't experienced it. but we have this odd situation here as well. all because of a 2nd world war. my country was sort of divided into two groups - partisans and colaborators. and eventhough they were all the same nation they were killing eachother, not only during the war..some mass murders occoured when the war was already over. there are still big tensions about that and reconciliation still hasn't been made. but that's something politicians and old people who experienced it talk about, and not general population. i can understand there are tensions there, and it's a very complex problem that both sides should work on.. |
