It's a simple graphics trick that is used in most magazine
adverts. Read the top line go diagonaly from corner to
corner and then the bottom line. Try it, a good advert will
lead your eyes over the page this way and you will absorb
the essential information usually:
tag line/life style blurb
picture content (which you absorb fastest)
Purchace information/logo etc.

where did you go to school? i'm actually just graduating as
a graphic designer and i know quite a bit about it, but
apparently i wasn't taught about the "z rule".

referred to as such.

I learned more in the year after University than I did in
the four years there. I expect you will be the same. The
crap I didn't learn shocks me now.

interesting. i've been working in an ad agency for a year
now, and while i have learned many things about the
business, not too many new design principles or concepts
have surfaced. i'm sure they'll be on their way soon enough.

1. i never said it was a bad painting, i just meant it
doesn't show a lot of skill, which therefore makes it more
conceptual.

2. there is a lot of conceptual art.

3. it's harder to really perfect your concept without skill
of the media your working with. which therefore lessens the
quality of your overall piece.

4. this ofcourse is becoming opinionated.. so i respect
everyone's taste of the arts and this specific painting.

5. i generally prefer skill along with good concepts but i
think a lot of people lack the skill to really make original
and articulate concepts.

6. um.. yea. i don't wanna argue over art cause it's so
diverse and personal.

you don't need technical skill in abundance to make great
art. that's a myth.

aren't we in a post-modern era? i'd say you're at least two
eras behind. ;)

I want to put on a dress with a sash that says
"transgendered pride" and carry that painting in the gay
parade this year.

excatly. now a days we dont need skill.. that's why there's
so much crap-art out there and art can be 'anything' and
yadda yadda.

but ofcourse, it's about taste.. but without skill the
concepts generally suffer.

but yea, whatever floats ya boat.. you know..

maybe you should think more about that, actually. i'm not
talking about taste or the art in this thread whatsoever.
you do not need skill or even talent to make good or great
art. it's just a different way of making art. to say that
pop art isn't good art because it wasn't painted by a
traditional master painter is a bit ignorant.

what about this, for example: suppose you have a piece of
music that was a single note. this note was played by
someone who had never before touched the instrument he
played the note upon. but now let's say that that note was
as beautiful as a full-scale classical orchestra playing
some famous beautiful symphony. i personally would have a
hard time taking into account the circumstances the piece
was created under... otherwise you are ignoring the work of
art in lieu of arbitrary boundaries you've set for
yourself.

skill, time, talent, procedure, quantity, technique - these
terms have no bearing on art that has been created. they
may be interesting as a footnote, but as far as art goes,
they are completely obsolete terms.

sure. there are exceptions.

yeah, but all the new, innovative art that appeared in the
last century are the "exceptions".

i like it : )

just one thing: i would never have interpreted the cut-off
part of the worm as a head if it wasn't for the title of the
picture and the explanation you gave.

the painting doesnt suit my personal taste, but I do think
it looks clean and nice and all, looks like you have done a
good job!

I don't usually go for the cartoon/popart style but I think
this is pretty good. What makes it so good is it's complete
cleanless and perfectness.

^supposed to be a follow up to fleetmouse's gay parade
comment.

thanks for all the comments, everyone, and a special thanks
to r40f and corrupted-girl for continuing their debate on
the quality/skill of art, that is really subject to
opinion.
