I'm against abortion.

Earthleakage, I wasn't refering to you.

I do NOT think that abortion should be banned at all, I'm
not some crazy fundimentalist. I agree it is far better to
do it in a clean environment.

Like I said, I think it's "wrong" (assuming that there is
such a thing as "wrong") to end any life, but I wasn't
speaking about it in a practical ethics sense, if you get.

It's easier to kill unwanted children while they are in the
womb than it is to jail them when they become a problem to
society after childhood neglect.

maybe you shouldve mentioned that when setting your argument
out at the beginning, unless of course you weren't really
bothered about converse, just trying to stir people up by
picking a somehwat contentious subject. but i'm sure you
weren't doing that, were you?

Well, I didn't ever state in the first post that I think it
should be banned, and I didn't say that I would try and stop
people having an abortion, I just said why it was wrong from
a logical perspective.

But yes, perhaps I should have added it in the beginning.

That's why aborrtion should be legal.

it's really only "wrong" if you believe human life has some
real value. but humans placing value on their own existance
is a little non objective. if squirrels had a value system,
they would likely place the value of their lives above ours.
they would farm us for food and we could protest but they
would just say, "shut-up worthless human" as they slit our
jugular and bleed us before the blood congeals in our
muscles and ruins the meat.
true story!

I think any being that is, or has the potential to be, self
aware and rational, has an instrinsic right to life.

"potential" is quite subjective. if doctors can prove that
a fetus will be born severely retarded such that it will
have no potential for rational thought or self awareness,
then abortion is ok then?

if so, then why should science be allowed to dictate the
value of human life when science is not a part of our being
at all, but rather a by-product of human ingenuity? in this
case, a scientist uses logical thought to place value on
human life which is not so different than a christian using
faith to achieve the same ends.

"This thread was for discussion. But highly predictably,

people assumed I was preaching and ignored my constant
affirmations that this is in the philosophical realm rather

than the practical and just resorted to wonderously original

insults."

and this is were I think you're taking a wrong turn - you
cannot see something as abortion in a purely philosophical
way. you must also take the practical in account.

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-04-12 12:45 [#01562782]

Well, I am only thinking from a theoritical perspective.

Evolume, my personal opinion is that it's dangerous to start
applying values to what constitues a life worth living what
does not (as I said in the OP) and thus I take a more
absolute view on things. However, I must admit you have been
a bit stumped on that issue you presented, as a severely
retarded baby may never reach a stage where it is
self-aware, so I see your point here considering the fact
that that I said any being that is self aware or rational
has a right to live.
Then again, that has little to do with abortion, as a
severely retarded 3 year old may also not be self aware or
rational. Perhaps I should re-think my criteria?

Anyway, perhaos it would be better to close this thread
soon. In any forum with the ability to do so, I would have
done long ago.

I haven't read through this entire post and frankly I don't
think I can be arsed to plough through pages of the
inevitable lunatic xltronicer rants that will doubtless
litter this thread already. I just read the first post.
It seems to me that: no-one has a right to take the life of
another. The main issue with abortion should not be
if it's legal but when. When does a foetus
become human?
Answer: I don't know. Not when it's a just bunch of a few
hundred cells, I'd have thought.

life is filled with moral ambiguity. you mention a slippery
slope, but it's all slippery slopes.

if you knew that killing one person would save millions of
lives would you take that one life? if you didn't and
millions lost their lives, would you feel responsible?

what if saving millions meant taking two lives.. or three?
what if you were unsure how many might be saved?

it's never black and white.

I don't know, although I am not a utilitarian, simply
because I do not have a crystal ball and will never know
definate outcomes.

I still think there are absolutes within situations. I think
would be absolutely wrong for a man to rape a woman,
regardless of whether soceity agreed with it or not.
Likewise, I think slavery is wrong and always was wrong,
regardless of what idiots thought back then. Why? Because
uneccessary suffering was being caused to human beings.

I guess my absolutist moral code is: "minimize harm".

Technically they wouldn't be hamburger. They'd have to be
snotty-little-shit-burger, though I think McDonalds have
already trademarked that.

They seem to put a lot of effort into protecting their
little concern at the expense of eveything else. Like animal
rights activists. They don't mind who they hurt as long as
the animals don't get it.

i dont get how it's 'her body' it's in her body and it's
another body that's in there
the problem is people get pregnant despite measures taken,
it's the way of nature. having it and giving it away is not
as easy as getting an abortion

If the dinosaurs were still around we wouldn't even have to
worry about stuff like this. Some people would get eaten and
die and others wouldn't; it would be an acceptable non-taboo
fact of life. This post makes sense.
