I don't "dance" per se.. I mostly just jump and pump my fist
and shit (sometimes, if there is enough room, I do drunken
kung-fu, or we start a "fight"), but I sure as HELL don't
just stand in the corner, watching.. me and a few friends
has made a thing where we ALWAYS stand in the front-row at
concerts! HUG THE FENCE!

however, I only go to concerts.. I don't go to discos and
places where you actually GO to dance...

Personnaly I like dancing like i'm selling nails...

Even with noisy stuff like Merzbow's : if you feel the
music, there's no problem... in fact when you see people
dancing around, you can't just stand static among them..
unless you are very very shy or music is very very bad (but
even if you don't like the music much, in gigs you always
feel it better IMO).

Oh Tolstoyed, don't forget to tell us about the Merzbow gig
!! =Þ

i don't understand why anyone would care if people dance or
not; its their desicion , let anyone enjoy the gig in any
way they like as long as it doesn't get in someonelses way
[eg severe moshing]

i really disagree , perhaps if you are bang in the middle of
the room standing there , fairplay that is lame , but
nothing wrong with just chilling in the wings smoking a jay
and taking in the tunes

again, depends on music...if the music being played is dance
oriented i'd expect people to shake it (at least a
little)...or as you say they could move aside and leave more
space for others.

i dance, but i can only dance to certain stuff, as said it
does depend on the music, i dont like dancing to
squarepusher, i really like just standing there (but not
right were everyone else is dancing) and listening. same
with plaid i like just listening, but Vibert, forget about
it i am mr mcdancealot and my legs have turned to liquid,
his stuff is infectious.

exactly what i was thinking...i haven't seen spusher or
vibert yet but i know perfectly well what you mean. plaid is
a fine example of music to listen to...although it's very
rhythmic, but it's much better just to watch (the excellent
vids by bob), listen and have a smoke.

yes, i agree, if vibert every comes around i strongly
suggest seeing him, you will be out on the dance floor no
matter how insecure or sober you are.

he was here couple of years ago but i missed him for some
reason. i'll definitely go if/when he comes around again.
although i'd much rather see squarepusher instead :)

I think the main difference between "idm" and the average
"dance music," is that "idm" is much more focused on the
subtle details of sound and instrumentation (even if it's
often largely pre-programmed). Another aspect that is
becoming hugely popular and becoming more and more
associated with "idm" is fact that the musicians very often
deliberately do things to throw off anyone who would try to
dance. Many of the well-known artists construct their songs
in a way that so they are very difficult to follow
rhythymically. To me, it seems like it's a movement of music
that chooses not to neccesarily include or condone a certain
non-musical aspect that comes deep from it's roots, simply
because it's from it's roots. A similar example would be
newer "heavy metal"-ish type bands who tell their fans not
to go violently crazy and "mosh" to their music. ...Like the
kids should be able to stand their and stroke their chins to
the apparent "complexity" of this so called "new variety"
instead of being continually assualted by an uruly, hulking
sweaty dude who is only focused on venting aggression. I
know that's probably an unpopular comparison, but it's all
expression and movement to music, however chaotic or
annoying one may be.
I don't think it's wrong or annoying for these artists to
discourage these sort of accepted norms of behaviour, either
through their speaking, or indirectly, through their
performance-through the nature of their creations.
Again, I've lost my point mostly.

"is fact that the musicians very often
deliberately do things to throw off anyone who would try to
dance"

from my experience most of the top idm artists almost always
play different (dance oriented) music to what they release
and that's great imo. i don't like to hear them play same
stuff i can hear on records..

offline idle interloper on 2004-10-14 18:50 [#01363477]
Points: 418 Status: Lurker

Well I just mean the music in general, not the live
renditions in particular. I agree, It's good to hear
something different live. Maybe the reason that the live
concerts are a bit more straightforward, other than the fact
that it makes it more possible to 'get into it', is that
it'd be much more difficult to do the little glitches and
technical fuckary with the usual hardware and other
live-music tools... It's not easty to get into the gritty,
often relatively-mentally-challenging aspects of the music
that are many times a focal point of the album versions.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2004-10-14 18:59 [#01363489]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

again i don't agree with everything :) there are people that
are quite good at doing 'little glitches and technical
fuckary' as you put it, infact they enjoy live shows the
most...the improvisation and all that.
i agree with the last part though, but only to a certain
extent. i guess we just have different experience in live
gigs :)

I don't like it when nobody dances, it is pretty annoying
actually for me. I mean, I really like to bust it out,
beats and music on a big system make me want to move. Then
you get all embarassed in shit because nobody else is
dancing, people act like there is some sort of code to it or
something, like there is no way that you could actually just
LIKE dancing.
Nobody dancd at the rephlex party I went to last year, they
just stood there like a bunch of zombies.
fuckers. It's shit like that which makes music go away.

anyone can dance...jump around, shake it, just go mad,
forget about your inhibitions and let the music take
control. dancing is mucho fun.

im fairly shy, so im hardly ever just throw myself out there
no matter how drunk i am, but but, but as mrgypsum said,
vibert can really make one wanna move nomatter how sober/shy
you are, squarepusher worked well for me too, maybe becouse
im really into his stuff

plaid was a "standing noding drinking beer band" the last
time i saw them, first time i saw them they played allot of
double figure and that made me move at least alittle

i agree that it feels good to overcome the shyness and start
dancing, it's kinda hard when one is shy but it feels good
afterwards =D

of the times im in a disco/live perfomance i do not dance...
(only afx made me dance...)

today: mira calix live. will i be able to dance with her, or
it will be abstract and slow?

might surprise you :)

i was moving a bit last night at ceephax...but since i hurt
my knee pretty bad couple of days ago it hurts like hell
today..

because iv only ever been to 1 live show and that was aphex.

if you are shy in a big dark room while "dance" music is
being played, and there is alcohol being served, and you
still need to close your eyes to get enough nerve to dance,
than you need some help getting out onto the dance floor. i
suggest a shrink, no i am only kidding, but its really not
that hard to do, just move to the beat, it doesnt matter
what you do when you move, swing back and forth, move your
hips, jump up and down, just move to the beat, you will get
into it and you will lose any insecurity you have. its makes
the show 100 times more enjoyable.

i can't dance, but i do anyway if the music's great; long as
i'm enjoying myself, it's all good. i know i look like a
fucking retard, but it beats standing in a corner being
insecure.

it's been a loooong time since i've been somewhere that
plays decent music, though, so i guess i don't dance at
all.

went out last night for the first time in ages, by the end
of the night i felt like stabbing somebody in the face.
god, i wish there were some decent places in adelaide; i
swear there are /none/. if r&b and sleazy bars are your
thing though, sure, i guess it's great.

subtle details of the music come out as smaller subtler
movements.

but the best thing to dance to is techno.
