Hell yeah, Zero Wing is more than just funny translation and
setting up us the bomb. Tough as nails, with a kickin'
soundtrack!

Gyruss was awesome, unique perspective for an NES game. Neo
Geo had some beautiful shoot 'em ups, too. I remember I
wanted to buy a home Neo Geo, but it was like 700 dollars,
and 150 per game. Thank God for emulation! I can finally
play games like Blazing Star and Last Resort that I could
only read about for years.

Did you see my Streets of Rage topic from a few days ago?

"I've got Pop 'N Twinbee, a vertical shooter (a bit like
the classic 1942) that features the Character Twinbee from
Parodius.
"

Actually I think it's the other way 'round ;-) Parodius
features the character Twinbee from Pop 'N Twinbee.

I have that one too though! Amazing game. I adore the
graphics. That supercute miniature-world looks incredible.
And I like how you can also throw bombs down to the ground
and kill some harmless creatures wandering around there :-p

It also has a nice sense of humor. In the underwater-level
at some point a cute little fish swims in from the left side
of the screen. And you go: "ah how cute, a nice little
fish..." And then all of a sudden 10.000 more cute little
fishies come swimming in from the left side of the screen
and almost kill you. Haha.

The music is really fantastic too. Always makes me feel
happy.

I also have the sequel called Rainbow Bell Adventure.
Altough that isn't a shooter, but quite surprisingly a
platform game. Twinbee (and Winbee, and Gwinbee) all run
very fast which makes the whole thing feel a bit like Sonic
The Hedgehog (not as good though).

I wish Konami would release more games of this kind. Crazy
japanese and funny games with cute graphics (Goemon
(mystical Ninja), Parodius, Twinbee etc). Recently they've
been making much more serious games. Very good serious
games, but still...

"It had screenshots of a hot 200 foot tall ballerina and
some beautiful blonde chick in a robe, laying down but I'd
say she was 1000 feet tall, and she was shooting lasers out
of her eyes.
"

I actually think that's the one I was talking about. It's a
sequel to Parodius never released outside of Japan. Called
"Gokujou Parodius!" There is definitely a blonde
laser-shooting chick in a robe laying down in this game :-)

And ofcourse also the famous dancing-girl where you have to
fly between her legs and not let her crush you under her
heels. Only this time she's twice as big as in the original
Parodius (two screens tall!).

Plus there's also a very sexy mermaid as one of the
boss-characters. She makes huge splashes with her tail. It
looks awesome. Especially for a snes-title!

The best R-type is obviously the original arcade
version,perfectly emulated on Mame.Also anyone played R-type
Leo?Arcade only as far as I know but again available on mame
if you know where to look-the graphics are STUNNING and it
has great music too.Best shooter I played recently was
Salamander 2,managed to grab a rare Japanese "Lifeforce"
special edition for the PSX which had salamander 2
included.:)
Hudson have released a Japanese only gamecube remake of the
awesome "Star soldier" (old nes shooter) which is brilliant
too.Well worth getting.

There used to be a 10 (11?) complete CD set you could buy on
ebay/from dodgy sites. I imagine that with the advent of
affordable DVD-r technology, some enterprising soul has made
a two DVD set and will sell them in such a way.

Apydia: Is Leo the prototype/very limited release one? I was
looking for it the other day (I used to have it) but
couldn't remember the name.

Data East are legends, Bad Dudes and Burger Time rule.

Ceri, I guess it isn't too hard to find a romset to download
- I'd never pay for one of those sets. I was just after a
decent site to get single roms though.

Ceri, yeah, the arcade for "Leo" only came out in Japan
unfortunately.About 1992.But if you do find a rom set it
shouldn't be that hard to track down.As far as finding
actual mame roms just on sites now,it's almost near
impossible.Over the last 3-5 years,a massive sweep was done
over the net and rom sites were closed down left, right and
centre. The only surving sites I can see all seem to be
french ones.Very good to get Amiga roms from if your running

Last weekend my gamecube-controller went broken. The
B-button and C-stick didn't work anymore.

So I sent it to Nintendo's technical support on wednesday.
And I got a package from them already today with a
completely new controller :-D

Completely off-topic, but I thought it was very cool of them
:-)

My C stick is broken. Everytime a play a game, the stick
thinks its pointing right, even when it's not. It makes
playing games a chore, with the constantly spinning camera
and whatnot.

Pain in the tush.

I found it in a thrift store a couple of years back and
having never played (or even heard of) it took a chance on
it base don the pics on the back. Glad I did and yes the
music is mental. Talking of old game music, the gentle
Bassline of the end (final cut scene) music to Rtype 3 is so
awesome. Really understated and it'd work fantastically in
an ambient piece.

Apydia: Just checked my roms and I do have Leo... just that
some parts needed for the latest version of mame aren't
there. I hate the way for every 2 new games that work with a
Mame update, 1 working one fails :-/

"Good Avatar!"

thanks, i've had it for a while :-)

"the stick thinks its pointing right, even when it's
not.
"

LOL, that isn't even annoying anymore. That just makes the
gamecube unplayable. Most games use the c-stick, how can you
properly play a game when the camera is constantly
moving to the right? :-p

You should get a new controller. Or if it's still in the
warranty-period send it to technical support.

What bothers me though is that with the new controller they
sent me, I can feel the grey controlstick works and feels
much better than when I last played with the old
(broken) controller. I guess that means those damn
controlsticks still wear out pretty fast like they used to
do with the Nintendo64 :-(

If this "Nintendo DS" thingy is going to have a controlstick
instead of a D-pad. I might just consider not buying it at
all! Atleast with a controller you can replace it
(relatively) cheap. But what am I gonna do once the
controlstick on a handheld is worn out? Replace the entire
handheld? :-/

its fucking awesome

its 3d, but not really 3d, its basically 2d but with 3d
graphics.

i have it on r-typer setting [fuck the rest of you pussies]
and ive spent the last hour getting off the first stage.
Haha its so bloody hard. I remembered how stressful it is to
die in that game too, you get a hundred powerups, your ship
is immense, then you meet a badguy youve never come across
before, and you just know he's gonna kill you 20 times until
you figure out his patterns. Grrr then you start over with
this shitty limp dick ship again

tough game. In ref to an old post, you're right though,
games these days are way too easy compared with the old
days. To complete a game in the past was a big deal these
days it means jack shit.

Yeah, completing games nowadays is often just a neccessary
chore to unlock things, especially the multi-player bits
(levels/characters/whatever). It tends to have little
meaning in itself. I completed Super Rtype 3 a couple of
days ago and it means a lot more than beating, say, Soul
Calibur 2.

Yeah exactamondo! Like I remember playing Arkanoid II back
in the day on my ST and if I managed to get to level 32 once
say every 6 months it was an event. Your palms would be
sweating like shit. You'd be like if only I can get to just
the next level and so and so. If was like a major major buzz
because to get a kickarse run you had to be so sharp so
focussed. Made people better gameplayers though. That said
couldn't have made a major difference as I still get whipped
by others online when I play Unreal :(

With all the flash and dash and computer generated cutscenes
and massive environments that the developers put a LOT of
work into, it's not surprising that they dumb down the
challenge so that people will actually SEE the fruits of
their labor. It's nice, but sometimes it doesn't feel as
rewarding. I can definitely understand why they'd do it,
though.

It's refreshing when a game like Ninja Gaiden bends you over
and fucks you up the ass every time you get to a boss.

Yeah that was the other thing- the lack of save points meant
you had to clear your schedule and actually sit down for say
an hour at a time and play (without making a mistake) to
beat your high score/get further than ever before.
Dying/messing up felt so much worse as you had lost more,
but conversely, success was more meaningful. I actually
think it's that sort of gamesplaying that gives you the
useful sort of "high attention span" skills that are
actually useful in other parts of life (driving, sport,
work, etc.) This pussy "save and reload, no harm done"
gaming that kids play nowadays just encourages sloppiness
and probably translates to their work ethic.

you cant save on r type final. You can replay levels youve
conquered, but only on their own. To progress, you have to
play from scratch each time. The coolest part is that you
get better with practice so you can get all the best power
ups and actually keep them a while.

i've been playing graduis III, my main problem with it is
that you loose everything when you die, (which is typical
for these games), but you also lose your speed power ups and
it's hard playing the same area really slow when you just
died going fast in it

BOO

Yes, you can go for ages with a fully powered up ship then
lose all your other ships in the blink of an eye when you
die once and lose the powerups. Games deal with it in
various ways (letting you keep powerups when you die, not
making the basic gun/speed so poor that it's impossible to
play with just them, only powering you down slightly etc.),
but I admit Gradius III is really bad at it (you need to
collect a huge number of powerups to get a fully powered up
ship with 4 options), as is Parodius.

The trick is just to not die... ;)

I think I take pretty good care of mine when I'm not playing
with it (I don't throw it around, make sure the chord
doesn't get stuck etc). But perhaps my playing-style is a
little too rough for it or something. After a particularly
intense part of a game I usually find my hands are kinda
cramped around the controller. So I guess in the heat of the
battle sometimes my fingers might be a little rough on the
controlstick ;-)

I'm gonna buy a couple of spare-controllers before the next
nintendo-console gets released. Because I often wish I would
have done that with the Nintendo64 before it was replaced by
the gamecube.

Very wise... analogue pads wear out a lot quicker than old
button type ones. It's the one (console) thing I try to
avoid buying second hand. You never know how much it has
been used/how badly it has been treated. I bought a second
hand n64 pad which was fine in store, but the stick had
broken (gone loose) by the time I got home!

Fortunately, the retro market is growing so you can get
things like refurbished NES/Snes pads and even brand new
third party ones from specialist sites/stores. Hopefully
you'll be able to buy some sort of useable controller for
N64, even in 5-10 years time.

I don't like buying used games for the newer consoles (on

Scratches! I think some people must use them as coasters or

I mean at least those cartridges never broke down! I'll buy

LAZY_THIS yet?

Holy shit. I want need to buy atleast half of those

interested in in the very least... and will probably be
buying anyway if a new Mario and/or Zelda-game comes with
it.

"God, it's in a fallow period right now, though."

Yeah well, ofcourse we're always a bit behind on you over
here in poor europe. MGS:The Twin Snakes is just being
released over here and looks really good to me. I'm also
very interested in the new Harvest Moon game.

As for right now. I've finally decided to pick up Resident
Evil remake again. I hated it when I first played it... but
now it's alright. The trick I've discovered is to try not to
panic whenever a zombie appears. If I stay calm I can
usually take them down. I can live with the poor controls
and limited ammo... it definitely makes the whole thing
scarier. If you were some kind of superhero-zombieslasher it
wouldn't be much of a horrorgame.

However the idea of having a limited amount of
save-possibilities (the ink ribbons) is just ridiculous.
Only being able to carry 8 items and the whole system with
the item-boxes adds nothing to the game besides frustration
:-/
Still a good game though. And scary as hell :-)

Ofcourse I also still have the SNES. I haven't even properly
started with earthbound yet! (oh yeah.. i forgot to tell
you... so I picked up a copy of earthbound. WITH the big box
and the HUGE manual with the scratch & sniff stickers :-)
It's fantastic! I'm waiting for a vacation to play it, so I
can really indulge in it).

And you, you should really try Animal Crossing :-) That will
keep you busy until all

Exactly! That's the kind of thing I'm hoping will happen
with the Cube as well :-) Hell, if by then the Gamecube
itself becomes even cheaper, I might even consider
buying a spare gamecube :-p

By the end of the Nintendo64's lifecycle, I did manage to
pick up lots of cool games for insanely low prices... they
were practically giving them away! But I didn't think ahead
enough to also invest in a couple of new controllers :-/

I should have bought a 2nd N64 too now that I think of it.
The big power-supply unit that attaches to the N64 itself
keeps keeps loosening itself on my N64. In the midst of a
game suddenly the screen will go black because the computer
doesn't get any power :-/ So i have to wiggle with that
power-supply-thingy a bit until the red light flashes on
again. It's very annoying.

I haven't really heard or seen much about it yet. I'm
excited because it's an rpg... but I really don't know
anything else about it yet.

The screenshot on that link I posted looks exceptionally
good though :-)

Have you seen pics of homeland yet? Another cube-rpg that is
coming out in Japan and looks really good to me (sort of
Animal Crossing-ish). It's also supposed to have limited
online-possibilities. I wish it would be translated and
released worldwide! Same with Giftpia... I need those
games!

The game I'm easily the most excited about is Wind Waker 2.
It is going to be amazing. It simply cannot be not
amazing... using that engine... and with the developpers
having learned from Wind Waker 1... I'm thinking this one
will be even better :-p

The Four Swords Adventure is looking better and better too.
It's really not just a fun little multiplayer-game anymore.
From the previews it seems it's actually quite a big and fun
adventure. Also enjoyable for solo-players :-)
It looks like this is the closest we're ever going to get to
having a proper sequel to A Link To The Past.

It would also be nice if we could see some Mario 128 footage
this E3... but I'm not exactly holding my breath waiting for
that to happen :-/

Oh and I forgot about Paper Mario 2!!
My god... now that I think of it... I might even be looking
forward to that game more than Wind Waker 2 :-o

The original Paper Mario was possibly the best mario-game
I've ever played

The bloody multi-load too :)

It was so impressive for the Spectrum though, that Snake
thing on level 1 was so smoothly done. I remember one of the

magazines (Your Sinclair, I think) giving it 98%.

Mine too :'(

I remember BUYING that issue of YS. I think it had a
demotape with the first level on the cover.

I downloaded gradius 3 earlier today and just beat it; I
didn't use save state very much, though I'm aware that the
little I did utilize it made things quite a lot easier, but
infinitely less tedious (the reason--deaths are slow).

I played it on the hardest setting, and I feel like I'm
physically going to die now.

Final how the final boss dies after a fixed interval of
time--you don't even have to shoot. It's the games way of
showing it understands the energy requirement; how sweet.
