I just bought this online. is it good? I fucking loved the
old one. Ahhh.

I was reading about this and it looks ace. It's PS2 only
isn't it? Soundtrack sounds like it'll be good too.
I loved the old ones too... R-type 1 on the Speccy, Super
R-Type (3) on the Snes. I'm going to have to set my Snes up
for a session this afternoon :)

i only had the spectrum one. I loved it so much. Wasted too
much time on it. But was it really wasted? I THINK NOT

im hoping it'll be rock hard like the others too. Games are
way too easy these days

The bloody multi-load too :)

It was so impressive for the Spectrum though, that Snake
thing on level 1 was so smoothly done. I remember one of the
magazines (Your Sinclair, I think) giving it 98%.

Talking of R-type, I really want them to do a version for
the GBA. The old gameboy version was great for the system's
capabilites and a GBA version would be able to have some mad
stuff (plus the widescreen aspect ratio would make it
ideal).

Videos here. Looks like they brought back the
infamous "whole level boss"... :D

I've got it. It's really fun. There are over 100 ships to
unlock. Plus a cool two player fight mode. Some levels are a
little lack-luster but the more you play the better it gets.
If you liked the previous R-types you'll like this one!

I like R-type... although I spent more time playing Konami's
"Life Force" and "Gradius" (on NES) back then.

Just been playing Super Rtype. I'd forgotten how hard it is.
Even with an arcade stick and set on novice it's really
hard. The way it puts you back at the start of each stage
when you die, even if you're on the boss, can be
frustrating. Still a great game though.

I'd also forgotten how 16 bit side scrolling shoot 'em ups
were the first to feature bullet time (horrific slow down
when there are about 100 sprites on screen at once! Although
it's nowhere near as bad as in Gradius III...)

There's "Bydo" and "R-Typer" as well if hard is too easy.
I'm umming and arring about buying a second hand PS2 just to
get this.

They just released R-Type III for GBA. I almost bought it,
but then found out it was badly ported.

Ah that's a shame...

I remember an old R-Type 2 advert, the text was "The first
wave was easy. The Second will drown you."

Just completed R-Type 3 on the Snes, the first level is the
same as the first level on the Arcade version of R-Type 2.

if you like R-Type, play Ikaruga on the Gamecube. It's a
short game, but in the classic style, with a twist, made by
the guys who brought us classic shooters like Bandai-O and
Radiant Silvergun.

Oi Oddio, can you answer my query regarding Viewtiful Joe?
Ikaruga is great. I've got it on the DC. Well hard compared
to most modern games. Bangai-o wasgreat too, sort of
platform version of Smash TV, with extra Treasure zaniness.

It is, I still haven't got past level 4 (or is it 5?)

There's loads of replay value too...

Oddio: I can beat the tank no problem
now. I am however, stuck on the train. I make it to the end

and press the brake button, those things come down onto the

track and slow the train, but not enough to stop it. I've
tried various things, but the harsh time limit means I only

have about 45 seconds to experiment by the time I get there

and it's a real pain. Any solution, gamesmaster? :)

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2004-04-15 09:59 [#01144119]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker | Followup to Ceri JC: #01144109

yes, use SLOW. when on the stage, blast through the level as
quick as you can (go for the keys only, avoid any needless
fights except the guys at the brakes themselves) to get to
the brakes, lest you care about ratings, in that case fight
a few enemies to earn points.

When you hit the button, hold SLOW as the brakes screech on
the track. Keep doing this until the train stops. (You may
have to go through your whole VFX meter twice, if you're on
Adults difficulty.)

Enjoy! Right afterwards is the boss, and the stage
afterwards is a incredible task...

So, even if the VFX wears out, keep on the button and then
just hit slow again once the bar is back up?

R-Type was fun but the Thunderforce series on the Megadrive
was better IMO.

For me R-Type was just simply too too hard. You couldn't get
started with the flaming thing.

Thunderforce 4 was great. I think my favourite MD shooter
was Hellfire... really good balanced play and you weren't
completely screwed when you died and lost your powerups on a
late level like in a lot of shoot 'em ups.

Should be awesome, I almost bought that and Gradius for PS2
the other day.

Thunder Force 4 is the greatest shooter ever. The soundtrack
should be illegal. It's so sick. Gairies, Hellfire, TF3, Sol
Deace... the Genesis was a shooter heaven.

Gynoug was a great one too. A the levels had a sort of
Altered Beast style neo-classical architecture look about
them and mythological enemies. Your character was some sort
of an angel.

Thunderforce 4. The only game I have ever considered lying
about losing it to the person I borrowed it from in order to
prolong my time with it. I'm going to have to track down a

I have a copy called ''Lightening Force'', note the
misspelling. It's also the only copy I've ever seen.

Is it called Lightening Force or Thunder Force in the UK?

Thunderforce (I think it was all one word). I only ever

It's "Thunderforce" in the UK. I remember playing the whole
game through three times on the run because I loved it so
much. Oh, to be young again.

btw, the rom is here if you want it. Slow server
though.

WTF... I wonder why and WHERE it's called ''Lightening
Force''.

Definitely play the third one! The soundtrack is absurdly
awesome, especially on the fire planet. It's nowhere near as
hard as 4, though, nowhere near as intense.

More weirdness...

I had both Thunderforce 2 and 4.

Thunderforce 4 is the best fucking shooter ever!!! I still
play it today. I seriously do, I have no problem playing the
old Megadrive games.

Yeah the music for Thunderforce 4 is the bizness. Especially
level 7/8 pure jap rock brilliantness!!

I've never played any of the R-Type games. :-o
Maybe I should get the one for snes.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a crazy japanese sequel to
Parodius for super famicom. It's even weirder than
the original Parodius :-p I especially enjoyed the
ballet-dancing panda-bear. Haha. There are also like 16
different ships to choose from. Including a bikini-girl
riding a rocket, and a flying version of Goemon.

Haha, Parodius... what an awesome game. I remember the first
time I saw it in a really old Gamepro back in '90 or
something. It had screenshots of a hot 200 foot tall
ballerina and some beautiful blonde chick in a robe, laying
down but I'd say she was 1000 feet tall, and she was
shooting lasers out of her eyes.

Good game, obviously.

Yeah I had Gradius on the Snes. I completed it a few
times... it was too easy because of the huge amounts of slow
down on some levels.

Surrounded: I've got Pop 'N Twinbee, a vertical shooter (a
bit like the classic 1942) that features the Character
Twinbee from Parodius.

Don't forget Zero Wing! :)

Also, was anyone else here into Gyruss on NES / Arcade? IMO,
that was one stellar shooter for its time - even on the NES
it rocked hard (difficult shit though!)

If my memory is correct, there was an R-Type game on the
Atari Lynx, wasn't there?
