if someone takes a leaf from a tree, and puts it behind
glass, with a frame around it, they can call it art..
everything, even the art we create is in a way part of
nature.. we just muddle up the elements to create something
aesthetically pleasing, or thought provoking to us, but all
the while usually ignoring the concept of adding any
functionality that nature puts into each of its creations.
the difference between art and nature itself to me is that
nature is part of a bigger something. i would equate art to
the burrow of a rodent.. an alteration of
nature/surroundings to suit the needs or wants of a
creature.. art is usually just created for selfish reasons
of expression, but nature serves a purpose to life as a
whole, and doesn't necessarily express emotion in
creation/viewing.. it does, however sometimes make it
possible for the emotional and visual aspects of artwork to
be appreciated through that life. instead of considering
nature to be just unintentional, physically functional
and/or tangible art.. i'll say that art is just a smaller
subset of nature.. a weaker imitation of nature created by a
product of it..
okay, i'll quit rambling now.

my fave would be video art with music, stuff like chris
cunningham's work, which intertwines the music and the
video.

What I mean, Visual artforms are wonderful, but being
engaged in the artwork can fade pretty quickly. Music,
auditory artforms, never seem to fade. I can listen to saw2
or the beatles over and over again and never get sick of
them for years.

I disagree.

by it's very nature (ha ha) art is artificial, therefore not
natural.

art does not exist outside of human perception. it is
thought up by us.

well, yes it is artificial.. as in "mother earth" didn't
create it directly.. just obliquely.. but because it was
created by an animal, (a human) i consider it about as
"natural" as other modifications of the earth done by
animals to survive, or to be content, only seemingly less
instinctive, and much more thoughtfull, complex and
destructive to the world.
i don't know if art is completely needed for our survival,
but if you were to take away art completely, we would be
left in a society that would seem much more primitive to us
than the world we currently live in.
in our advanced state of society/human thought, art forms
have become essential to convey emotions, ideas, etc..
our "wants," the expression of those ideas and consumption
of the works have become almost as crucial as our actual
basic needs.
i know, it sounds bad.. considering people are starving, let
alone not having artistic expression/consumption of art..
but just think of all the people in wealthy societies who
claim to have no will to live, most likely because they have
no way to express their thoughts and emotions and they think
that they don't have the talent for anyone to want to listen
or look contently.
to me, it seems like art and creativity were naturally
created by the human mind to express the most complex and
intense feelings and notions therein, once society had
reached the point where surviving is a given.

im loving well designed web pages. i think thats definately
an artform in itself. especially really well made flash
designs.

then, of course music. mostly electronic.

i hate movies and tv. dont really consider too much of it to
be art. most is just commercial crap. but then, everynow and
then there is a good film.

ps: the last movie i saw in a cinema was ET....hehe.

a quote from someone i cant remember.

"science is what we understand well enough to describe to a
computer. art is everything else"

"All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music."
- Walter Pater (18??)...

Still kinda true..altho the boudaries between forms are
getting less & less well-defined...

I'm an old slag, I'll love anything, even the unloveable..

obviously musical arts..
visual arts..

who else here is into coding/illustrating web art with
dhtml, js/ajax, css etc? i mean, pretending as if you never
knew flash existed and still going on to recognise how
clever/funky interfaces can be scripted?

ok flash can be cool on occasions, but the internet is
seriously glutted with it..for example it's still possible
to reveal just relevant elements from within a preloaded
page - even with loading screens - without needing to use
flash, multiple pages/frames or extensions
