It's got what sounds like a heavily timestretched string section that runs all the way through the track. Nothing too substantial but it complements the unsettling nature of the track. I think.

Haha.. no no no. A collection of arbitrary songs is exactly what I'm saying Confield is *not*.
You're just trying to get a rise out of me aren't you? :*)

did you stamp the floor saying that, like a hyperactive 8 year old? :-)
okay i get it all but whatever it is i would have liked a good melody you all know the remix of it from the competition, in that you can hear the melody more clear: do you think that's a good melody
especially the smaller bit of the two melodie parts i find weak

I don't think that the melody is weak, not at all... i can't imagine another melody in Pen expers... the structure is complex enough !
Bob i dont agree with you... i think Uviol and Lentis catachresis are great. The others tracks are not weak at all... just difficult to get into and i agree that some can't be loved by everybody. But when i play this album, at no moment i feel bored. Never (since i've almost understand it).
OK the songs are maybe not the best of all electronic music times... But for me no one is uninteresting, each is independant of the others and really worth getting into.
But with those 9 songs together, Confield is probably the best album i've ever heard.

i'd hit the chick in uviols avatar.
anyway, cap.iv's melody is better imo, it does the noise beats vs chord thing better, pen expers in a classic though, i love it.
and no i don't think the melody is weak.
and to another poster who said the last 2 tracks on confield is weak, DUDE?
have you even heard uviol? that shit is the best.
man.. confield owns, all of it.

the effects on the melody sound like the aural equivalent of a neon light flickering on and off

If you removed everything except the chords you would have a pretty good ambient track. It is very interesting to observe the way the volume of the "melody" goes periodically up and down while simultaneously the volume of the individual notes change in a different ratio... I entirely disagree with some posts in other threads claiming that autechre is full of repetition...

No other melody would have worked on Pen Expers. End of discussion. Eh! It's all about it's struggle versus other portions of that track, how some parts of the melody get stronger sometimes, weaker at other places, it's like 5 fingers trying to reach out to another rock doing some mountain climbing.
