probably because you are russian. i have a russian friend
here, and everyone thinks he is loud and crude and obnoxious
but it is mostly because of his accent and cultural
upbringing. He is actually quite a swell guy and one of my
best friends.

Tonyfish,

The Royal family actually don't get a lot and you're being
quite naive believing that you take the Royal Family off the
Civil List and then suddenly it will release a huge of funds
- the difference it would make would literally be a drop in
the ocean.

The fact that as you put it Health, Education etc are bad
and inefficiently managed is down to the government policy
and lack of hardline managerial experience themselves. I try
not to be patronising to people but it is bloody hard
because I often feel what people say is just purely
emotional and really has little or no ground in the first
place. Yes people are entitled to their opinions but doesn't
mean I have to agree with them.

I know this is somewhat insensitive but whatever. Being a
colonist, I guess I don't understand why the class mentality
in Britain is worth preserving. I really believe in
meritocracy. Although it could be argued that the
knighthood in question is an example of meritocracy, more
generally I dislike the respect that is given to birthright
in Britain. It, no doubt, occurs here too - but less so.

You're joking right?

The Queen is worth about £50m. Wealthy for sure but
certainly a long way off the richest people in England let
alone the world.

Yes you are right there of course. It's just the fact that
these worthless individuals are financially worth so much
which irritates me but then again one could say the same for
many others. I find the monarchy completely pointless and
strongly believe that it should be abolished. I could come
up with more arguments but I'm tired and I have to get up
early tomorrow so I'm going to bed :)

the point is - why accept an accolade from an institution
you don't believe in?
jagger seems at ease with the idea of the royal family - so
let him take his knighthood.
benjamin zephanaia doesnt feel as though the institution
represents him or his interests, so he refused.
same for bowie i guess.
john lennon accepted his accolade from the royal family,
then returned it some time later in protest about an
aspect of british politics he strongly disagreed with.

surely, people offered an accolade should be entitled to
turn it down if they feel that the institution presenting it
run contrary to their personal politics/ideals?

I'm playing devils advocate.

How important is the Norweigen language? Not important at
all? you're speaking english to communicate with others.
Let's abolish Norweigen, it's obsolete. + it sounds boring.

Fantastic, another ill advised demand to get rid of the
monarchy:
fact- The monarchy cost the average briton 56p a year in
tax
fact- They bring in many times that amount of money to the
country through tourism.

Also, whilst it's largely a matter of opinion as to whether
they would exercise it, the monarchy do have a hell
of a lot of power- more than leaders of any other country
bar a few dictatorships. The fact that the queen does not
regularly exercise these rights is irrelevant. That they are
there and can be called upon in time of need is what
matters. If the governement ever did try to really (and I
mean really- as in "proper" 1984 type population control)
control the population far more than was neccessary, the
monarchy could prevent it. The fact that they have near
limitless power and vast amounts of wealth means they are a
lot less bribeable (what could possibly tempt them? They
have everything already...) than corporations, politicians,
etc.

I really do laugh to myself every time I hear a leftist
demand to get rid of the monarchy, when in actuality,
they're the biggest defense against a police state that we
have.
