confield is their best... no question in my mind... they set
out terrain for themselves... and flesh it out completely...
often there is the illusion of repetition, when truly...
it's constantly changing... gorgeous, terrifying,
tactile...
my favourite tracks are Cfern, Parahelic Triangle, Bine, and
Uviol...

LP5 is my current favorite...

with Confield, there seems to be too many songs that don't
really hit me that much, whereas LP5 I've been enjoying
completely recently!

well, confield is a great album, indeed, one of the best
releases 2001, not only in electronic music, i think, but my
fav CD of ae is EP7 and speaking of albums: Chiastic Slide
is much better :-)

interesting that I'm seeing alot of "chiastic slide" is
their best when I'm told that they themselves were not very
happy with that album. if I remember correctly they said
"it wasn't a very good follow up to tri repatae" but then I
could be totally wrong.

That doesn't mean they weren't happy with it. It just means
it wasn't a very good follow up to tri repetae.

offline john is fast from sacramento (United States) on 2004-01-30 03:25 [#01054503]

yes but I recall them saying they weren't happy with it, I
think it's interesting that alot of people hold it as one of
their favorites and autechre themselves weren't very happy
with it.

But Tri Repetae is still the best ae-album for me...

Anyone got a link for this Chiastic rumour? I just thought
that "Nothing" records in America thought it was shite - and
originally refused to release it - I didn't know Ae did as
well.

offline horsefactory from 💠 (United Kingdom) on 2004-01-30 09:36 [#01054816]
Points: 14867 Status: Regular

For fuck's sake.

They NEVER said they weren't happy with it. Simply that it
was not a good follow up to Tri Repetae, which is not
necessarily a negative comment at all.

The only time I have heard ae talk negatively about a
release is when they were asked what they thought about thom
yorke saying LP5 was the best album ever or something and
they were like "oh well we've done much better than that".

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-01-30 09:52 [#01054826]
Points: 5079 Status: Lurker

I saw that comment at allmusic.com
And the "bad follow up to Tri Repetae" could be taken as
negative.

I lent my copy to my brothers girlfriends brother about a
year ago. They've split now but I must get it back!!!

It hurts my CD wallet when it's gone.

Not at all, it just means it was a bad follow up to tri rep.
Maybe they didn't want to do a follow up to it?
It makes sense to me that they wanted chiastic slide to be a
standalone album rather than some kind of successor to tri
repetae.
Besides, no one knows the original interview with the quote,
so this is all chinese whispers

thats cause i haven't bothered to actually understand the

I'm in too ae and all but I really haven't given this album
a chance as a whole. Don't know why. I'm listening through
it all now for the first time. I've only listened to 1 and 1
track and of those pen expers and eidetic casein sounded
good for the first time, kinda easy listening tracks imo.

stunned by them - i can listen to them over and all over
again - never got tired of them.

When you listen to some music perhaps on a different hifi or
in a club or pub, you hear things you've never heard
before.

With confield, even on the same hifi, the same room, the
same headphones, the same eardrums; I still listen to it and
hear things which are new. The intricate programming on this
album is great, even when I know the song inside-out,
back-to-front, its never 100% predictable.

they made this album by shaking a box of cheerios and
putting the sound through filters.

Jarworski put it right:

"I haven't yet discovered the merits of Confield, still
sounds like a load of bollocks at the moment

To some people it always will :)"

That´s what I think too, I can´t stand it... "Confield"
was the first Ae release I didn´t want to buy.

So I was sitting in the park today listening to Confield,
which a very enjoyable experience that I'd recommend to
anyone, and it struck me that Confield is very natural.

The convention of having 4 beats in a bar and all that
technical music stuff is entirely arbitrary and historical
and only seems to be natural due to its standardization.

Confield in many respects is much closer to nature. The
songs all have some kind of pattern or template to begin
with, and where they end up is largely determined by chaos.
Sean and Rob, being masters of this little sonic world, are
able to influence the development of the songs by modifying
their environment. The songs aren’t just written,
they’re grown. By growing different versions of the songs,
they can pick the ones they think turned out the best and
use those in their creative process.

Thinking of this while listening to the music and observing
the plants and things around me made me feel that Confield
is actually a very warm album. It’s not the sound of cold
machines or a sterile electronic environment. It’s the
sound of things coming to life in musical form. Some sound
alien, some are more familiar. Some are extremely chaotic,
others seem to stick more closely to a pattern, but each
song has a certain life to it and I don’t think any single
album has pushed things forward more than Confield.

mneh, its an ok release... The problem with autechre (on
quite a few of these songs and the ones on Draft) is that
they dont go anywhere. Case in point: Uviol, incredibly
beautiful but after 4 or 5 minutes it becomes total wank and
you can tell that they've run out of ideas for this track.
VI Scose Poise and Eidetic Casein are the most well rounded
as actual songs and not just sounds spewed annoyingly all
over the room like an all-you-can-drink frat party.

Confield is excellent. I think it evokes the alien
landscapes as well as SAW2 does. It never seems to get
boring, unless you thought it was in the first place.
