"Aphex Twin doesn't need RRSP's. "I reckon," he says,
"I'll probably sell more albums as things go on, but I'm
still surprised to sell one hundred. I can't comprehend
people actually buying my records anyway. So when you sell
worldwide like a hundred thousand records, I just can't
imagine it -- like a hundred thousand people buying my
records. It's pretty bizarre. I wouldn't care if they didn't
buy my music anyway.""

I bet he would care if people didn't buy his records
and he had to get a shitty job to fund his living, which
left him with only a few hours a week spare time to make
music :)

i wouldn't read too much into an off the cuff remark made
in an interview by someone notorious for talking shit!

He has been known to let loose nuggets of truth though. But
you're right. I wouldn't take that as 100% truth.

Those numbers look a little haphazard. I've been looking for
a dependable sales resource for IDM albums for years (I
think it was one of the first topics I ever made), and to no
avail.

200,000 for Drukqs is pretty badass though, more than I
thought. I've got the only copy I've ever seen in my
province of 1 million people.

korben dallas,

Goddam Radiohead name dropping Aphex wont make any
difference to sales. Goddam Aphex was around before
Radiohead. And has always had an exceptionally strong fan
base. What a load of bull.

Radiohead got me into Aphex by namedropping him.

But in the big picture, yeah, the sales spike because of
that was probably pretty tiny.

I believe Aphex does 100,000 plus on record sales for sure.
I mean come on that is fudge all really. I mean the Orb back
in their day did a million apparently. And God knows what
FSOL have done in the past with Lifeforms etc. They must
have done at least a million. Thing is there are too many
artists nowadays. Lots of serious quality but just so many
people making music.

I think FSOL were generally shifting about 100,000 units
back in the 90's - Although I could be wrong - They actually
talk about it somewhere on their website - I think it's in
the shop on the ISDN album... They talk of 100,000 being THE
milestone for them - Although Papua New Guinea sold millions
I think.

IDM's sales figures are actually pretty stunning for a DIY
scene!! Just think about that!

I work in the punk scene a lot - Most punk records seem to
sell in similar numbers to typical IDM releases - The
problem is they have to pay £thousands for studio time and
the profits are split between the band and often a manager
too... So it's much harder to get by on record sales.

Techno, Drum&Bass, House, etc... don't sell as well as
people would think - I was speaking to Larry Heard (Mr
Fingers) not long ago about this - He's upset that people
just aren't buying records these days - The scene is huge
but yeah, there's too many artists to keep up with and it's
too fragmented - So people just buy compilations and
download music... So yeah, one of house musics' greatest
pioneers is still having to work a day job.

When I used to make regular dance music it was generally
accepted that singles don't make money - Even for the big
names in the scene - The only real money is from remixing
big artists - So you just use singles more to gain
recognition.

But yeah - IDM is incredibly healthy for a totally
self-sufficient DIY scene! And it has been consistantly
healthy for over a decade now and only seems to be growing
as people get bored of regular dance music which has been
standing still since the 90's.
