It's not stealing if it's impossible to buy. No product to
steal.

people make there own morals. what you percieve to be right
or wrong is the ultimate factor in personal ethics. you
shouldn't have to make a list to convince your self that
it's ok if you believe in your heart that it really is.

Well, the first point is basically the one I was driving
at...if you think it's OK, then it is! (philosophically
speaking of course)

And the list was just why I knew logically it was OK in my
heart... :-)

i had a conversation about these things with my brother some
time ago. he's a big enthusiast on open source and free
copyright stuff. his main focus is on freeing program codes
in order to develop them freely (like linux) but it applies
on everything. art included.

when i say what a bunch of subjective nonsense, what i mean
is that the idea that there is no correct answer to a
question like this is false. people allow themselves to
become subjective to a point of saying whatever you think is
ok, there is no right answer, and i think thats a bunch of
crap. it allows people to just do whatever they feel like
doing and not have to answer for it or feel guilt. and it's
crap. it's a gluttonus mentality. me, me, me.

Interesting you take that view, presuming you think there's
a one-size-fits-all standard for right and wrong, what would
it be? Law? Religion? A.N. Other?

there is no "religion", there is only truth and lies.

there is a set of rules, like numbers, by which we are
allowed to determine right and wrong...

when people start thinking only of themselves, they start to
create X and Y variables where clearly numbers are present.
then they can solve the equasions any way they like.

But on what basis do you make your assertion about there
being a definite right answer to the question? What belief
set?

sorry i'm no good in phrasing these things.. too many things
and my mind can't focus.
i haven't made my mind all the way with it. while my brother
thinks that everything should be free and 'open source',
when it comes to art it gets a little frightening to me.

the day after we had the conversation i decided to put my
albums for free on my www page. of course that doesn't seem
much because i'm not signed and/or respected artist but it
was a big thing to me.

i think that it is more important for the artists to be
heard than getting money for it. if everything can be
copied, why should it be made 'wrong'? why should people who
have a lot of money have the priviledge to have a lot of
art? those who have money still can support the artists they
choose to. i do believe this world relies way too much on
the capitalistic system.

i do burn cd's. but i also buy them. the smaller the
artist/label, the more willing i am to give support.

Christianity.

even though i was joking, i was quite serious... i find most
organised "religion" throughout history has been HIGHLY
offensive to the standards of God as laid out in the Bible.
i do not support televangelists. i do not support the
militant, sacreligious nature of catholicism. my only
guidance comes from reading the Word of God, meditative
prayer, and experienceing life. i am very untrustworthy of
church, in general... it is foreseen in the Bible as well,
that there would be a "great falling away" of the church
from its God.

Yes people will often list reasons (excuses) for their
actions, trying to justify them morally or even just to
appear cool for the reason they do something.

I also don't buy into the do as you like if you feel
it's right. It's just like fatalism, something for weak
people who can't accept responsibilty for their actions.

some of you just need to learn to be better shoppers. i pay
usually pay $12 for a cd and rarely more than $14. i make
like $90/week at a parttime job and i have money for all the
cd's i really need to get (i decide this sometimes on artist
reputation but othertimes through previewing online via
mp3's and audio clips). if any of you want advice on how to
get $12 cd's i'm going to make a section of my web site
about it cos people ask me sometimes how to find cd's i play
on my show or even just in my room or on my discman.

I don't mind paying for CDs if lots of labels didn't rip
alot of artists off, so the artist only gets a marginal cut
when its their music being sold. So downloading it is fine,
as many hillbillies will always still pay for their CDs
keeping everyone in business. So i'll pay for my Cds when I
know the artist gets a bigger cut

getting cheap CD's in 4 easy steps:

1.
a) order from bestbuy.com where cd's are very cheap and you
can get free shipping on 1 item.
b) go to bn.com and perform these next 3 steps:

2. sign up for a reader's advantage club. for 12 months you
get 10% discount in stores (useless since prices are jacked
up in the the shop) and 5% discount online. when you order a
lot like me this 5% quickly pays off the $25 it costs for a
year. ALSO, you get 2 cards, so you can pick another person
to get the same discount, for free.

3. check here regularly and use the
discount codes.

4. with your discount information above, order any 2 items
(such as 2 cd's regularly priced at $12.99) and get free
shipping. after the discount your cd could be as cheap as
$9.

note #1: this is provided that you have no moral objection
to patronizing multi-million or billion dollar corporations
in order to save a few bucks.

note #2: it's oftentimes cheaper, and, for some, more
ethical and satisfying, to order direct from the label site.
for hefty records albums are $10 and ep's $7, with $1.50 for
shipping. www.heftyrecords.com. also, this isn't a label
site, but bentcrayon.com and strangefortune.com offer very
good prices for electronic music. hiphopsite.com offers good
prices too but the added bonus is you can get so many
freebies through ordering, including exclusives like bonus
discs, t-shirts, and posters.

note #3: it's cheapest to buy cd's used, especially promos,
but that doesn't support the artists because 1) promos are
pressed as loss leaders, profit-cutting cd's pressed for
journalists and radio stations in hopes of creating interest
in the album so that people will legitimately pay for them.
these cd's are technically owned by the labels anyway and
lent to people as promos, which sadly get sold a lot (i've
bought my share). so everytime you buy a promo, whether used
or unwrapped, you're taking money away from artists who you
wo

...would be paying if promos could somehow be kept under
control. on the other hand, if not for the cheapness of
promos, you might never take a chance and buy it at all (and
thus never become a fan, someone who would later pay for a
legitimate cd, attend a concert, or buy merchandise). so
it's a bit of a gray issue even for me.

point being: some things don't go together... someone who is
naturally inclined to a set of moral and ethical beliefs
expresses it in his daily practices... those who don't make
their own rules... it's the fashion of the day... all the
little kids (in age AND intellect) seem to think they have
it all figured out... some never grow out of it... but these
things can't just sit next to one another in peace, it's
unfair for one set of standards for one person, and another
for another... so humans NEED a doctrine of thought that
goes beyond illogical wants, and enters into sound
realism...
