im just imaging the relatives...

i mean, there is always worry when goin on a mission.

they must have felt releived after successful take off,
cause thats where the most accidents happen.

So, here they are, waiting for thier loved ones to return,
so much excitement and anticipation. There has never been a
re-entry explosion, so it is comforting, its in sight, and
they are thinking about how in 30 mins, they will be with
thier loved ones, and then suddently, it just kind of
dissolves in the air.

it must feel so surreal.... just like that... its over.

god damn.

in the challenger crash, there was evidence that a few of
them survived the explosion and that they died on impact

here, well, i think the speed was around mach 18, which,
also at that altitude, they would definetly be unconsious
before they hit the groud, if there body remained intact
that is.

There is a fuck load of force at that speed, I would doubt
they lasted long.

What a shit day for aviation and space exploration

I give it a 3/10. Few people died and the explosion was
small, hopefully the next one takes thousands of lives.

A piece of foam from the main external tank came away and
struck the left wing of the orbiter. The concern was that it
could have damaged the tiles on the underside of the orbite
that stop it burning up on re-entry.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to do an EVA to inspect the
underside of the orbiter, so the NASA bods had to come to a
theoretical conclusion which was that any damage caused
would have been minimal, and pose no threat to the orbiter.

The principle factor in arriving at this conclusion was that
from video footage it looks like the foam struck the leading
edge of the wing, as opposed to the underside and
immediately disintegrated.

Still, there will be a long, hard look at the incident,
given that in the minutes preceeding loss of contact with
Columbia, 8 sensors on the left wing stopped working.
However, from what the technical briefing said it appears
that these sensors were closer to or on the trailing edge of
the wing, not the leading edge where the foam appears to
have struck.

the worst bit is that they might have known the risks before
they came down, but obviously didnt want to be trapped in
space for the rest of their lives. :-(

I don't think NASA would have told them.....I don't think I
would of wanted to know, had I been one of them!

I probably would've though.
