Tits, I'm just teasing you. I don't like Shadow and that's a
well known fact, I never liked Entroducing and the same is
true with PP: I like Deadringer and all Def Jux stuff you
mentioned. I prefer all of it to Shadow. I am aware that
this is a matter of taste/ preferences and thus I am not
ready to duscuss it to any real depths.

i was responding to zeus since i think he has a long way to
go in explaining and justifying his opinions. plus it's fun
to pick on him cos he doesn't understand hip-hop, which
makes his appreciation of both rjd2 and dj shadow
suspect/questionable. you on the other hand i have no
problem with cos you like all kinds of music, have a good
sense of production, and have no difficulties arguing your
case. i love the el-p album and i find the albums by can ox,
rjd2, and others to be good as well. i just think their
style could be improved by more variety and parsimony.

no RJD2, he's on tour with the Company Flow tour

El-P, RJD2, all of Company Flow, a bunch of people I've
heard of but know little about.

only $20 for about 10 acts. and it's in club venues.
should be great

i imagine it will be like hearing the two Def Jux
compilation albums live.

Tits, hehe, I guess Zeus will be less than happy to read
that post of yours. What about Aesop rock, you think he has
variety?

Zguru: what do you mean Company Flow? They will actually
play live as a band, or you're just saying that El, Len and
Juss have separate sets?

true, he won't be happy, but i'm pretty honest when it comes
to how i feel about people's debating skills. i figure if
constructive feedback is never given then people will never
improve. i also admit to finding the irony of his despising
his music school classmates for not liking or understanding
electronica while he himself dislikes and barely tries to
understand hip-hop very, very funny.

as for aesop rock i think he's pretty good. i haven't heard
any of his full albums or ep's, just some select mp3's and
his guest spots on some cd's i have.

company flow has not reformed, i'm pretty sure they're still
unhappy w/ each other... if they're on the same bill i doubt
they'll join each others' sets

I'll try to stay updated on that, CoFlow were unreal, I'm
counting on you guys... I have to leave now, nice chatting
to you, bye.

tits man, what the fuck

you seem very bitter as of late.

i dont know much about hip hop, but i do know when i like
one thing over another. i like rjd2.

youre being an arrogent prick right now.

who said im not trying to understand hiphop? who says i
despise it?

you are jumping to all sorts of conclusions that have no
basis.

and i beleive my arguments are clearly stated, and the fact
that you are getting them, is cause you arnt really
listening to me. you have your opinion, you beleive you, and
only you are right. so youre not even thinking about what i
am saying

get over yourself. you are not the final voice of god when
it comes to hip hop.

as this doesn't relate to the subject of rjd2 vs. dj shadow
i'm not going to respond except to state that i stand by all
my points

you're a jackass

your last 2 threads wasnt anything about rjd2, it was about
bashin me.

i dont know what your problem is, or why your acting like a
dick...

i talked about def jux artists (including rjd2) in both of
my last messages, and if i'm a "jackass" for observing that
your anti-dj shadow argument is weak and that you have a
very questionable background in hip-hop (the type of music
both rjd2 and dj shadow make) then so be it! i've never been
one to hold back my opinion cos it might rub someone the
wrong way; this is how i feel about rjd2 and your argument
that his album's great, deal with it..

Saw DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist perform together a couple times.
Rocked VERY hard. They're good solo, but totally vibe off
each other as a duo.

RJD2 has a mix cd that I picked up on usenet... not very
good. Shadow's kill though.

fermilliar I know I've heard it somewhere else before? like
in a movie or tv show? anyone have any idea what I mean?

if not I blame it on the meds Im on tonight! eeesh!

dude

seriously, whats your problem?

i dont know much about hip hop, thats true, by why is it
questionable? what are you talking about?

and your just a jackass for being so condesending, and
making comments about me that you dont really know.

i dont care what your thoughts are, its just that in almost
everyone of your posts, you basically call me a moron, and
condesend me

get on AIM and we can talk, and spare the boards

i seriously want to know what crawled up your ass

i just find it personally insulting that you make no effort
to understand black hip-hop (producers and emcees). all you
ever talk about is white electronic artists who integrate
some hip-hop into their sound. rjd2 and dj shadow are pretty
authentic hip-hop but they're still white. i'm not calling
you a racist cos i'm sure you're not one, but it's insulting
to me that you dismiss the majority of hip-hop as not worth
listening to (as if it lacked aristic value). hip-hop is a
major part of my being so it's like putting down my culture
in a way.

so when you latch onto rjd2 cos the white media / white
hip-hop listeners* you've read / spoken to say it's good,
while ignoring or marginalizing other artists who are just
as good, it gets under my skin.

*note: i'm not saying no non-whites like rjd2, i'm just
observing that white hip-hop listeners tend to glorify white
hip-hop artists more often than blacks, which is absurd. i'm
not saying a black hip-hop listener's opinion is any more
valid than a white person's but i am stressing that
generally speaking they can vary greatly and that by not
paying attention to black producers or emcees you're missing
out not only on good music but the essence of hip-hop.

i know i'm going to get criticized harshly for my
romanticism on this topic but to be honest i just get sick
of hearing about the next great white underground hip-hop
artist. so many of them just don't deserve the attention and
get it only cos the rock-listening white media isn't able to
sympathize with hip-hop in its purest form.

in anticipation of said criticism here're some further
comments swiped from aim.
------
?: and you're right......white rappers get more
media......cos they are WHITE
howisya77: yea but it's a bit racist of me
howisya77: romanticizing blacks
howisya77: it's not like black artists are inherently more
talented than whites
?: i dunno about that
howisya77: it's racist cos i pay attention to races
?: but it is irritating.....that whites latch on to white
rappers
howisya77: which implies some kind of inherent inequality
?: well......just because blacks in general....don't get the
attention they deserve on MOST things!!
howisya77: i agree completely
?: you are sticking up for them.......that doesn't make you
a reverse racist
howisya77: and it really offends me that they create these
types of music (jazz, r&b, rock, bluegrass, and now hip-hop)
only to have them HI-JACKED by whites who imitate their
style but water it down to appeal to the white majority who
found the music too esoteric in its original form
?: you NAILED it
?: it becomes WIDELY known when a WHITE artist comes around
?: think about what eminem did for rap.......
?: it's completely obvious to me
?: your point
howisya77: i love eminem and i think he deserves to shine,
but unfortunately he's opened the door for inferior talents
howisya77: he's also further commidified hip-hop by being so
pop (the music style, not "popular")
?: i agree
?: i mean he's good....don't get me wrong
?: just that he popularized RAP for a lot of whites
?: made it more palitable....cos he's white
?: there's no denying it.....and you're right....opened the
doors for BAD rappers/hip hop

that really doesn't have anything to do with rjd2, just
hip-hop in general.

when have i dismissed black hip hop?

i said i didnt like blackalicious, but thats ONE artist

there is alot i dont know, and id like to learn more.

I didnt even know if rjd2 was white or black. its pure
coincidence that the 2 hip hop guys i like are white.

find me black artists that sound like rjd2 or shadow, and
ill listen. i like thier sound.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-10-04 11:22 [#00392615]

and enough with the media stuff.

the media does not effect me. i havent read anything about
rjd2. and the people on this MB, how do i know if they are
white or black?i just hear people say "rjd2 rules" so i took
a listen, and i loved it. on my own, i decided i like rjd2
more. and your not the only person i argue with. i know some
people irl that think shadow is better, so what is this
bandwagon you accuse me of hopin on? everyone is against me
practically

so maybe im not "gettining it" but im just goin by my gut,
and i like DR over PP. plain and simple

so, instead of insulting me, and condesending me, teach me.
show me artists that are like shadow and rjd2, black or
white, it doesnt matter to me. i just like thier sound. it
has a great vibe.

rjd2 is white.. look at the front cover of the album..

blackalicious is a good example but it's not the only one.
i'm not going to give you any more hip-hop recommendations
(and i've given you a lot, if you recall) cos it doesn't
seem to matter any.

whether you read about rjd2 or talked to 3 friends of yours
who were roped in by the hype, you've been affected by the
media in some way. tell me everything you know about the def
jux label, about el-p, about company flow, about
underground hip-hop. drawing blanks? that's cos you didn't
discover rjd2 through hip-hop but through the media, whether
directly or indirectly.

i'm not invalidating the opinions of people on this board.
firstly, not everyone here likes the same artists - i mean
just look at this thread. there's a lot of diversity in
tastes. but secondly, i've bought lots of music thanks to
the advice of people on here. rjd2 doesn't happen to be one
of those artists i've liked. i checked him out cos of this
board and some of the media hype but i just didn't think it
was spectacular, nor does it measure up against dj shadow
past, present, or future.

please show me other examples of you showing me someone and
didnt like it.

but basically my point is, you dont gotta be so condesending
and arrogent about it.

seriously. its just unnessasary
