rjd2 is not as good as shadow, silver fox is identical to dj shadow, dj shadow could even mistake it for his own song. some songs on rjd2s album are really good but hes got nothin on shadow im afraid. |

RJD2 = pure hype. if you listen to his music without thinking about the image the media's built up of him as "dj shadow's successor" it's actually pretty bland. dead ringer just doesn't stand up to anything shadow's ever put out, including his new album regardless of whether or not you like the direction he went. no one sounds like dj shadow and in the world of sample based music, no one has been able to match his ingenuity. |

what? i love rjd2. deadringer is superior to the private press, and im a huge shadow fan, so im not just saying this lightly i didnt read any media stuff about rjd2, so there was no hype for me. i just heard he was good, so i got it, and im glad i did it really is awesome |

i dunno.......i listened to both private press this weekend......and preemtive strike and the RHYTHM is soooooo great.....i own entroducing......i'm just loving DJ shadow more and more.....he's a genius IMO!! |

Zeus: internet = media. you'd have to be blind not to see all the hype RJD2 is given on internet forums like this one and music sites like pitchfork media. i'd like you to explain what makes dead ringer "better" than the private press. besides the fact that they really sound nothing alike musically, shadow's production skills continue to trump rjd2's (who does the same thing with every track). even rjd2 says he's nowhere near as good as dj shadow. just comparing the two is just perpetuating the hype so i'm done (for now). |

I have a shadow question, why did he put what does your soul look like 4 and 1 on preemptive strike and endtroducing? since preemptive strike is older stuff why did he choose to put these 2 on endtroducing instead of making more new ones? |

"what does your soul like" was originally an ep by itself. preemptive strike contains it in its entirety. endtroducing, which was made before P.S. was compiled, contains some of shadow's choice earlier singles (all from 95-96, not earlier). one of the "what does your soul look like" tracks was remixed, hence the subtitle "blue sky revisited". as for the order... i think the original ep didn't even have it as 1-4, i think it's supposed to mixed up. it's weird when artists do that. |

i heard the hype from like 3 people on this messege board... not what id call a huge media hype if we are to follow this example, then every artist ever mentioned on this website by more then 3 people. i think not and i think deadringer is better then the private press, because of the energy and flow. DR flows very well, its very soulful, and just has great songs while there are some good songs on PP, they dont flow well, and some of the songs just arnt that good. its personsal preference sure maybe shadow has better production, but i dont care. thats not all that matters. and about rjd2 saying he isnt as good as shadow... alot of artists dont think as highly of thier own work as others do. they have a different perspective on it. so thats not a very good argument |

you can make even shit songs flow well. you think those boy bands/teen girl singers albums are just hastily thrown together? DR flows well in the sense that there isn't one special track on it. while it's all "good", nothing is outstanding. which songs on the private press are inferior to anything on dead ringer? you can't count the interludes. i respect rjd2 for admitting he isn't shit compared to dj shadow. one's a promising upstart, the other invented and continues to reinvent the genre. tough comparison there. |

no, they are good songs that flow well id say DR has t he outstanding tracks, while PP has nothing special and when i say flow, not only did i mean from track to track, but also the general feel of the track. bad PP tracks: Interludes (yes they count...he put em on the album so they count), Un Autre Introduction, Walkie Talkie (its funny, but its short, and gets old fast. And that annoying buzz sound or whatever, its... well annoying. Telling me that is good production?), Right Thing/GDMFSOB (Shit), Monosylabic (its ok, but gets old fast), Mashin On The Motorway (laughed the first time, then it got old), You Cant Go Home Again (sucky suck suck) i like all the others... and some of these i can stand, but mostly i skip past these cause they annoy me so much. |

I'm not a big fan of this guy, though I appreciate what he's doing... I just have tried, and failed, to get into him. Too many samples and sounds for my taste. Amon Tobin uses samples in a way that turns my crank, Shadow doesn't. |

i can't believe you named "you can't..", "mono..", and "right thing" - those tracks rock! i don't even know where to begin describing them, but it doesn't matter cos i need to go back to studying for my test. i don't know if you've just fallen into the anti-dj shadow hype (perpetuated by people who can't take change) or if you've just not given the private press a good listen, but you're way off the mark and i hope someday you'll return to the album and enjoy it. no one says it has to be "better" or "worse" than endtro., psyence f., pre., or the singles. it's different. i think NIN is a good example of how when you have a long gap between albums during which your sound changes so much, it really isn't fair to say it's better or worse. you can still prefer older material (or newer) but it's almost like different artists. the private press and the fragile epitomize each respective artist but at the same time represent a vast progression from the previous recordings. for the record, at the moment i prefer the fragile to other nin albums and endtroducing to other shadow albums. what can still be done, however, is comparisons to peers - saying rjd2 is better than dj shadow is like saying gravity kills is better than nin. no matter how much you might enjoy the new artists and prefer the innovator's older material to their new sound, the comment is just nonsense. |

if you go and look through older threads, youll see i was very excited about dj shadow when it came out but it quickly got boring anti-djshadow hype by people who cant take change? what the hell are you talking about? what hype? you talk as if im like part of some large group that follows trends. its a simple as this: i bought PP, liked it alot the first month, then it never hit my shelf. Then on here, a few people tell me to check out rjd2 ( a FEW, not enough to consider it hype) I checked it out. it fucking rocked. the end. it doesnt go beyond that. |

anti-dj shadow hype: just read reviews and internet forum comments. you've bought into it if you liked it before and don't now; there's a LOT in the album, i highly doubt you could exhaust it in a few weeks time. either you missed it (but somehow heard the details in endtroducing, unkle, etc.) or you bought into the humongous hype of dj shadow's "great mistake" and rjd2's "salvation" of instrumental hip-hop. it's no different from the radiohead vs. coldplay argument. it's fine to like coldplay but it's hard to take anyone seriously when they say parachutes is better than anything radiohead's put out recently. same deal with travis and badly drawn boy. |

how many times do i have to tell you im not exposed to hype apart from like 3 people here, i dont hear anything from anyone i didnt read any reviews of either albums. i didnt discuss it with anyone. after listening to the 2, i decided i liked one better can you grasp this concept or do i have to keep repeating myself? |

I have returned from Dj Shadow. Odd Jobs opened. My life is changed. He played only his own stuff. Number Song Stem/Long Stem Midnight in a Perfect World What Does Your Soul Look Like (part 2) Organ Donor Mashin on the Motorway Walkie Talkie Six Days GDMFSOB Blood on the Motorway You Can't Go Home Again Blood Stain Drums of Death Lonely Soul Handsome Boy Modelling School - Holy Calamity and he went off a few times with some new original and improv stuff and he gave us some nice battle style scratch work truly amazing. he's a genius. |

it is not! you might not like the direction shadow's going in (what is it, too many guitars? not enough soul samples? he's moved on, why would he want to repeat something he did 6-7 years ago?) but the production slaughters dead ringer. comparing the two is like a joke to me. if variety is a good thing, which i think it is, private press wins in that regard hands down. there're some good songs on dead ringer but overall it's very monotonous. he has a lot to learn about variety and innovation. i don't see anything on that album that shadow couldn't have done in 1995 if he wanted to. the private press is a bit disjointed (as i've discussed on this board before) and some tracks fail at points (parts of "blood on the motorway" and "walkie talkie" stand out, plus the inclusion of the recorded messages and barely different "original version" of giving up the ghost are questionable). but overall these shortcomings are fairly minor when you look at brilliant tracks like "fixed income", "giving up the ghost", and yes, "monosyllabik". i could go on cos there is so much in this album. it could've been better but as it is it's still a whole lot better than rjd2's album. def jux have a lot to learn about making their tracks more memorable; too much on dead ringer, the cold vein, and fantastic damage just doesn't stick out despite being technically great songs. |
