Ubik is a killer. To me it's even better than Three stigmata
of Palmer Eldritch.

hehe..there i was gonna wildly postulate about his visionary
aphetamime fuelled warped stream of consiousness he often
displayed in his longer works..but you guys know all about
it..
oh..Yeah Ballard scifi is also some of the most poetic and
Diamond Chiselled..his contemporary fiction is good but just
not the same..all except for Crash that is:)

But one of my favourite Scifi-ish books is by someone who is
not even acknowledged as a scifi writer..The Passion of New
Eve by Angela Carter

Meho...I used to live with this guy who was totally into MM
& Hawkwind...like seriously obsessed...

..hearing em every waking second for a year or 2 kinda
turned me off..(and if it wasn't Hawkwind it was fucking
Ozric Tentacles..)...

So I've got a bit of a mental block when it comes to
Hawkwind & MM...blame my old hippy landlord (my attempted
murder of his dog was the outcome of all this...think I told
you about that a while back...)...

what .....i'm shocked .....no mention of the Frank Herbert??
or Robert Henlein (not sure of the spelling on that last
name)

those are my first *toe dippings* into scifi
and i was hooked.

Gibson and Vonnegut are amazing....and whoever mentioned
Poe....well he's just about my favourite author. the subtle
horror in his short stories just amaze me.

A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay
just got republished and I know not many people know about
it.

everyone that likes Sci_Fi and fantasy
should have this book ordered immediately after they finish
reading my post!

written in 1920, first novel to ever
fully create a new world with TRULY
alien laws and characteristics,
with such visual intensity that I don't think has ever been
matched even to this day, and I've read alot of books,
scifi,fantasy,plain fiction whatever,
this book is amazing and the Author is still pretty unknown,
have only read one other of his books and am searching for
all the rest.

Yeah dude is quite simply incredible. Frank manages to cover
every aspect of the planet without obscuring the plot. I
would put him in the list though as he tended to waffle on
towards ChapterHouse Dune (book 4).

first book...

pity no-one's managed to make a decent film version of it
though. Not that good science fiction should automatically
be given the hollywood treatment tho...

Am I the only one in the world that actually likes Lynch's
version?..he brought a sense dark perversion to it that just
added a whole new dimension to the proceedings...and those
costumes...incredible...

YES ! That was exactly what I loved about it and that's
exactly what was missing in the mini-series (that and decent
acting). I want lynch to remake it with round about the same
cast and a minority report budget. It wasn't all that bad
*Oh-my-god-best-film-of-time-must-make-pilgramage-to-see-th
just a tad corney at times. It just didn't give me the

effect that Blade Runner had on me.

stanislaw lem NEVER gets enough credit. my favs are:
stanislaw lem
robert holdstock (somehow they always put him in scifi-shelf
and give him sci-fi awards although his books aren't really
scifi, expect that one)
douglas adams
brian w. aldiss

and from a lighter point of view:
harry harrison.
i have always enjoyed steel rat and bill, hero of the galaxy

my favorite sci-fi author has got to be Robert Anton Wilson with
vonnegut, jr at a close second..

while not all of his (RAW's) works fall easily into
categories, they're mostly sold as sci-fi/fantasy.. the most
notable of his books is probably the massively epic
Illuminatus! Trilogy co-written with Robert Shea.. it's
three books of conspiracies, secret societies, sex, drugs,
rock'n'roll, interdimensional entities with a taste for
human souls, Epoch-spanning traditions of Magick, fnord, and
even a Midget!

also, he writes non-fiction books, mostly in the realm of
sociology and psychology, but delving into areas such as
quantum mechanics (and his own Quantum Psychology, which
book provides excercises for groups to perform so they can
test his claims for themselves)

this man's books have literally changed my life.. or in the
least, inspired me to make changes in my life myself. i
highly recommend anything by him.

The only sci-fi I've ever read is Stephen Baxter's 'Titan'.
It's about NASA's last mission before the end of the space
programme, a one way trip to Titan.

It's the most utterly depressing book I've ever read, but a
very good read nonetheless.
