i usually say experiment beats or something. If people ask
what IDM stands for i won't tell them. I mean who thought
up these names: rock, techno, jungle, house, hip-hop?

jungle,
i never of thought of it this way until just now.
but, jungle brings to mind, interracial sex.

thats where the name came from cuz blacks and whites both
made the music equally actually it's kind of a racist
name, hence people came up with drum.n.bass. i usually say
jungle still though

musical genres are based around contradictions....
rock and roll doesnt make you roll
pop doesnt make you pop
trip hop neither makes you trip or hop
classical music isnt always 'classic'
therefore intellegent dance music doesnt make you dance

what annoys me is drill n bass....why isnt it called drum n
drill?

GEM

but it didnt have much popularity

I thik I suggested AIM at one point

Artificially Intellegent Music. Suggesting that the music
has a mind of it's own as opposed to being intellegent to
listen to it as IDM suggests.

How about "Wicked-Ambient-Neuro-Kinetic"

It sums up>

attitude/style > "wicked"
feel/mood > "ambient"
brain involvement/cerebral Intelligence> "neuro"
movement/dance > "kinetic"

Its PERFECT for the genre, and makes a far better acronym
than "IDM".......
"WANK" :)

I'd never use the word IDM in a sentence in real life...on
the net, it's ok (vaguely)...

In conversation & if pushed I'd say something like Abstract
Beats or just mention some names like AFX or WARP...

Wasn't it mixmaster morris who explained it once by saying
it was called Intelligent Dance Music to be the complete
oppopsite of Mindless Techno Bollocks....I don't think it
was meant to sound snobby, there was a lot of shite stuff
around then....

IDM sounds cool
Intelligent Dance Music doesn't

"Intelligent": OK
"Music": OK
"Dance": not suitable in my opinion

and where are the emotions?
The most important thing of music is that it touches
emotions of the people who listen to it. Wheter you like a
song or not
depends for about 80 percent on the emotions you experience
during listening.

i think idm abbreviature was created when this kind of music
was more danceable and it stayed as a tag since then.
anyway, it's not important how you call this music, but how
you feel it. even more - i can not put under one tag
autechre, boards of canada, aphex, plaid and mouse on mars,
just different ideas of them all, different music after all.
