'idm' specifically refers to electronic music coming out of
europe at the end of the british rave era, doesn't it? so
can't we owe the term to "Brian R" or whoever started that
mailing list in the 90's?

I think the electronic music in America is a lot different
than what is going on in Europe today. The most noteworthy
examples in recent years are not necessarily pure electronic
music - such as Battles (popularized electronics as we know
and love them in American rock music) and Prefuse 73 (almost
a type of minimalist IDM) and J Dilla (opened America's eyes
to the world of production in a very important way) etc.
Rather, in America, electronics are often used in a more
utilitarian way, and less in a creative (pure) way. People
like Dilla and Prefuse are using electronics as an aid to
sample-composing, and Battles is using it for rhythmic
perfection and for its ability to layer complex but precise
sounds.

Compare this to the huge craze of house music beneath
(Mexico, South America), above (Canada), and to the right of
us (Europe). Across the pond, Europe's electronic musicians
are almost exclusively composers, until you delve into more
exclusive and local forms like dubstep.

I'd rather have the popularity and complexity in electronic
music that Europe has, but I think that, to an extent,
America has crafted its own electronic aesthetics that is
legitimate in its own right.

electronic music in and from america seems perpetually
compromised by its own audience. the dancier stuff even more
so. dopplereffekt, autechre come and tour and everyone just
stares. i don't know what the dynamic is, it could be a
million things but it stifles the crowd, and everyone's
waiting to be led forth and told what to dance to

I don't care what people say about Flying Lotus, but to me,
he is the one of the few live acts that's worth the money in
America nowadays. His music almost bridges that huge gap so
that people who settle for mainstream crap music can get
into intricate dance music, that's why everyone's
banging their heads when he's doing sets.

That guy Daedalus showed promise, but he went in a weird
direction with that style of his.

The reason why no one from america dances to artists like
Autechre is because...it' fuckin autechre? half of the time
they play random arpeggiated tracks that have no sense of
rhythm. They're unpredicatble, and more of a spectacle, just
like any other great artists.

good old' flylo. his songs need to be longer. "golden diva"
could easily been 6minutes...

i dont understand how you can't dance to autechre, their
live shit is like the epitome of underground hardcore dance
music. even though the 2001 show had some rhythmically
throwed off shit i think its still danceable. totally. its
more than the rhythm that makes you move imo

the same time, you can enjoy it just as much as you mioght
listening sat your arm chair

i think the big problem with the "idm superstars" coming to
the us is not the crowds themselves, but the venue. so many
times i've seen a big act at a rock club that just doesn't
have the setup, flow, or the sound system for dance music,
like amon tobin at the independent in sf. but come to some
of the more underground stuff (ie artnowsf and an-ten-nae's
shows in sf) and you see people dancing the heads to some
face-melting electronic music on sound systems to match.

oh, and when me and my friends went to see autechre in '08
we tore up the front row dancing and bumping into nerds.

well, the wiki article on idm was written by "mjb", one of
the early members of the idm list. obvious bias there!!

re artificial intelligence, yea that's true there was a name
of "intelligent techno" that appeared in a couple of british
magazines, but it died out very quickly due to
embarrassment. british know when to throw their rubbish in
the bin. idm list of america created "idm" and the warp
records ppl put some of that list messages in the artwork of
artificial intelligence 2. after this the timeline splits in
two. in britain "intelligence" was embarrassed out of the
culture and we continued making great music. in the usa
"intelligence" grew and was the defacto interpretation of
aphex twin, so the american "idm" music was the true genre
of idm, and it was not good music.

the problem happened in 1999 kind of times, because then
everyone came online and mixed on internet forums. the
american interpretation and way of thinking was represented
by the people who actually said "IDM", the idm list
americans. it wasnt used in uk very much at all. only the
pretentious journalist simon reynolds. idm is just a name?
no it's a way of thinking that affects the artist who makes
the music.

even squarepusher didnt mention idm at all until a cuople of
years ago. basically the journsliasts forced it on him. to
be honest thats why i think hes lost the plot recently, the
shitty american idm list thinkings have taken over his brain
and hes lost touch wtih the proper british eccentricity that
made him soooooo good.

and analord is nooooot idm!!!!!!!!!!! no no no no no no no
no.... some of the ideas behind this is to KILL idm name
once and for all!! influence the boys towards the true path
for electronic music!! yes!!

if the new aphex record is called "Idm classics" then we
know the CIA and FBI are behnd it all, with their fake
america genre mistake interpretation. it time to bury this
fake gay philosophy under the ground bre!!

oh and i know wisp is american idm on fruityloops and this
is pure IDM
basically this is a conspiracy by venetian snares to spread
a fake truth of idm
venetian snares is animal lover, dont listen to him he is
wrong everything

wisp is good but dont let evil venetian snares spread the
IDM further. he is wrong it will degrade our culture
further
electronics is the future!!!!
we need a james bond of electronic musc to kcik ass and save
the fuckin day. only aphex twin can be the james bond of
electro hehe cos he's teh true genius of electronic music
:-D

it's true, it's acid, techno and electro. ironic that while
we may have coined or set in stone the term IDM, those 3
styles are in fact american in origin.

‘The Caucasian Persuasion’

“Ever since the blues and early jazz, black music has been
stolen and exploited. It pisses me off that we let it
happen. It’s
a political thing; everybody talks about it under their
breath, but they don’t come out and say anything about it.
As far as I’m concerned, Richie Hawtin, Moby, and all the
rest of ‘em can do what they want, but don’t step into
my house if you don’t respect it. Don’t even call what
you do ‘techno’! I don’t want to hear anybody saying
Richie started any damned thing, ‘cos he ain’t started
shit. All he did was step in with his money and his
Caucasian persuasion and put himself on the market, and now
he’s got all these kids riding his jock. We never had rich
backgrounds; we were working jobs for $4.25 an hour. Our
mamas never gave us money to buy keyboards and put records
out. We work for our stuff. That’s why there’s a big
difference in the music.

“Why do Richie and his Plus 8 family come down here and
throw parties in downtown Detroit? He brings in all these
kids from the suburbs and from Canada, and that shows a lack
of respect. I’ve been to every one of those parties and
I’ve never heard an Underground Resistance record, a
Cybotron record, a Model 500 record or an Eddie Fowlkes
record. It’s a total lack of respect, and it’s got to
stop.”

Awesome videos. Whatever he's playing at the begining before
slipping into "Mum-Man" is fucking incredible, I can't tell
if there's something recognisable under the flangey assault.
I like the shot of him turning all the knobs one louder, up
to 11.
