You can hurt your hearing real quick with moderate volume by not taking any breaks. I went two years almost constantly having music in my ears (studying, on the job, and going to sleep), and now have mild tinnitus.

I did some research and it is all the mind, apparently... I read that one should not sit in silence, but should carry on as normal. Kinda surprising.
