42 minutes sir.

theres so many different things recorded. a lot of shortwave
radio. the nato/e15 numbers stations were recorded live too.
too many things to list really and it's a bit boring.

the album still isn't even officially released. i've got
some plans for it next month, so i'll keep you all posted if
you're interested.

thanks everyone.

Personally, it stings a bit to know that it's available for
free now, but I don't regret buying the album, and I hope
that people continue to contribute despite it being free.

I liked your new hip-hop beat as well. I'm going to play
around on top of it with my keyboards (not recording)
tonight.

well ive been listening to the album for a while but forgot
to comment in the thread..
i also bought it when there was no free download, and
personally it doesnt sting.. im glad to support brisk so i
would prolly buy it anyway.

as for the album, i think it has a very nice vibe, nice
fennesz/hecker type static and melodies.
it may be a little minimal for my taste, but i think it has
its moments.

yeah, i can deffo appreciate that for those who bought the
initial copies, you might be a bit pissed that the whole
(mp3) album is free now.. but i've just had enough of the
whole distributor/retailer model of selling music now and
just wanted to give something back. maybe i'll treat those
early birds who bought the album sometime down the line...
:)

cheers again. cx, that also seems to be the fav track of
most people who have commented back to me, so you are in
good company it seems!

i dont mind that its free either, id probably still pay.
forever is great but dream window really evokes something
for me. it has that certain something thats buried in my
brain from something long ago. i still listen to this often
and i check back from time to time to see when your follow
up will be. cant wait.

Damn, I really need to buy this. I am quite disappointed
that I haven't yet. I have downloaded it though. Still feels
like cheating though.

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2009-05-06 04:09 [#02289698]

well the whole point of making it free to download was just
to let people hear it. maybe it's not particularly clear on
the website, but you pay your own price for the cd
version - whatever you can afford or think it is worth. no
minimum price, so you can also effectively have the cd for
free too.

fuck feeling guilty and all that shit - it's only music!

thats not fair!

i was forced to pay a fixed priced for the cd,
and the music wasnt available for free by the time...

i can offer a refund if you want? as i say, i didn't really
have a definite plan for the album back then and since
people wanted it as early as possible, i just sold em
direct. just email me and i can sort it out. same for anyone
else.

brisk, just a quick offtopic post/question..

do you feel satisfied with the way your cd turned out and
releasing it for free?
i remember a year ago i dreamt of being signed to a label
and having my own cd and stuff, but then i realized nobody
would sign me now.. and then i read your faq and it got me
thinking, we already have more then anyone else did even
just 5-10 years ago.
with the rise of the internet and netlabels and online
distribution, does anyone really need a label?

im starting to let go of the idea of being signed to a
label, for some reason, some of my albums have gotten
thousands of reviews, but still netlabels arent taken that
seriously (they dont get reviews in online mags like
popmatters, pitchfork, etc..)
many people say the cd is dead and record labels are dead
(like trent reznor), and with everyone downloading rips of
cd's, is that correct?
id like to see some numbers on how many cds by say fennesz
black sea or alva noto xerrox vol1/2 or tim hecker imaginary
country are printed and sold.

but also, if any of those artists would sell their work
online only, they already have enough completists and fans
to get the release spread, so they can easily change to
online distribution.
the problem is then that new artists should forget about
being on labels, and they can in many ways also forget to
get famous/reviews online only, because nobody takes an mp3
release as serious as a label cd release. so what is an
artist to do?
its a weird time right now.. im not sure what my goal should
be (i would like my music to spread as much as possible :P)

depends what you want out of it. if you want to make money,
then pretty much forget it. even breaking even is hard
enough. for a musician or producer just starting out now,
the facade of everything being so much easier because of the
net is overshadowed by the fact that everyone else is trying
to do the exact same thing. it's a saturated market and just
getting someone to hear your music is hard enough.

in a way, i do agree that labels are soon going to be made
completely redundant. at least for established artists, as
they have the luxury of a fanbase anyway and people will
actively look for their music. digital downloads make up a
huge share of all music sales now and many labels have given
up vinyl entirely just to go 100% digital. how long do you
think it will take artists to realise that through digital,
they don't even need a label in the first place and will
simply just sell stuff themselves/through a third party
download store? not long in my opinion. even then they
probably won't sell much - but they will get the all
important exposure they need to make an actual living
playing gigs/dj'ing.

as for artists just starting out... i think labels will
still be relevent and nothing gets exposure for an artist
than being on a label with other people who have made it
already.

i hope that physical formats will survive and i still think
cd albums will be around for a while. for anyone who takes
their music seriously and doesn't just want to make money,
then i'm sure they'll still want a real, tangible physical
product for people to own. trent reznor might give his shit
away for free, but he'll always have a really nice limited
edition on cd/vinyl. i think his views on the music industry
are pretty spot on actually.

all i know is if i worked for a traditional music
distributor, i'd be shitting my pants. their time is almost
up.
