as far as comparing hail to the theif with those (i never got the live album) i think its good, and tracks like 2+2=5 and scatterbrained are awesome, but some just ... i dunno. stuff like the gloaming and we suck young blood just don't work as well for me.
pulseclock: im at work so can't watch that but sophie sweet does not do HC very often so you better appreciate it.

So as far as I can tell, you don't think it went wrong for Radiohead at all.

not really, no
I don't think everyone in radiohead was happy with the direction thom and jonny were taking it. i think that is why hail to the theif had some good songs but was overall hit or miss but, now that they've sorted it all out...
In Rainbows = awesome The Eraser = awesome There Will Be Blood soundtrack = awesome

Orbital after the release of their brilliantly understated 'Middle Of Nowhere', managed to follow it up with a pretty inane offering with only one track worth merit. The last album was so much better than their penultimate one, but nothing replaces Snivilisation for the most kickass album ever made
Radiohead, when they released Pyramid song.

so where did it all go wrong with x-marks the pedwalk?
skinny puppy electro-industrial to euro synth-core pop.
most of the industrial fans hated meshwork (i loved it) and drawback, so they stopped releasing music.
similar thing with haujobb.
started out sounding like puppy, then by solutions for a small planet and ninetynine the industrial-ebm elements were blended back with a focus on idm/electronica elements more in the forefront.
again industrial fans did not respond well to it, but instead of breaking up every album after has been SO ebm that i cannot really get into it.

orbital after middle of nowhere - wrong, the altogether is very good and Blue Album has many good bits (so i'd say it was after the altogether)
pink floyd after the wall - ok
queen after the game - dunno
pulp after different class - dunno
massive attack after mezzanine - wrong: 100th window is very good, apart from those Sinead vocals
plaid after double figure - wrong, wrong, wrong !
uziq after lunatic harness - wrong: royal astronomy might not be that great, but bilious paths ? come on, the brrrreaks ! yummy
and many many more
7 artists: 4 wrongs, 1 oks, 2 dunnos
there you go, Sir

Beck (1998): Beck was only Beck before he released Mutations. After he released that piece of crap, he has always been trying to re-invent himself. I'm not saying his later music sucks, I'm just saying that his earlier music was more original.
Bjork (2001): When Bjork started dating Matthew Barney, her music has just never been the same. The 2 aren't related, but at around that time, her music had changed a lot. Although I love Vespertine, as well as Matthew Barney, her music since then just doesn't have the same feel that her 90s music had. Maybe it has something to do with Michel Gondry.
Peter Gabriel (Late 90s): Peter Gabriel is an innovator of progressive rock. His sampling of real world sounds in his album "Security" might be an example of early electronica. In 1992 he released "Us" which was his last really good album. For about 8-10 years he was inactive. during this time, he lost the same talent, as well as his hair.
the Chemical Brothers (2007): We Are the Night was a piece of shit.
Dave Matthews Band (2001 & 2002): The group had gone through many difficulties between 1998 & 2001. The producer of their 3 previous successes had left, and their album "Everyday" had kinda sucked.
However, after that they had made up for it by releasing "Busted Stuff" which was their last good album. Stand Up sucked, and the new one will suck too.
