That statement is quite opinionated. If you actually get to
know the people most of them are very nice individuals

He is entitled to an opinion, and as it happens its an
opinion that is shared by a great deal of people here,
including myself. They just probably don't have the guts to
say what they think.

I too would be interested in knowing how many of these
people you know also...in real life that is.

I go to motorcycling boards a fair bit and the fact that
most people on them meet up IRL quite regularly keeps people
nice and civil on the board. There's none of this 'If I ever
meet you I'll beat the **** out of you' posturing you
usually get online, as people know full well that if they're
disrespectful, they really will get a kicking in real life.

Of course, the trolls never turn up at meets (shame really),
but it means that most 'normal' users are a lot more civil.
Sure, there are people who dislike each other, but they tend
to show a bit of respect.

Drunken Master: I suspect they're unpleasent IRL too, but
are a lot less loud-mouthed about it. A sort of quiet loner
with a constantly angered/frustrated expression, but who is
still polite when you talk to them.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2005-06-24 06:50 [#01642901]

heheh.. I can't really imagine any of the trolls from here
as quiet loners. JAroen seems to have as much energy
everyday (HAHA KABOOM!) as he had on here, but otherwise I
know what you mean.. it's easier to be a tough guy on the
webs if you're never going to meet the people you're
badgering.

even so, I still can't imagine bill_hicks to be a constantly
angry midget in real life too (unless he'd take on his xlt
"personae" at a meet up), nor can I imagine people walking
around talking about nothing but autechre. you only see a
small portion of a person on here, and sometimes (not all
the time, but sometimes) it's even a fake portion.

Drunken Mastah as ever, providing sober wisdom. Out and out
abuse over prolonged periods is never acceptable but I do
find the cartoonish "angry posturing" antics of some
"characters" far preferable to the dry, presumptuous,
disdainful arrogance of other members.

Bit if women can do it, why can't men? eh?

cartoonish "angry posturing"??

there is nothing cartoonish about it - some people are
intentionally rude and hateful towards other members of the
board who have done nothing wrong.

I ask myself "what is the point", if you wanna be nasty to
someone because they've been a twat then fine. But if you
want to be nasty to someone just because they don't conform,
or you think it would be "cartoonish "angry posturing"" then
there is something wrong.

Really - there is.

women can do anything they want and get away with it, it's
one of many unwritten rules of life. if they do something
wrong it's your fault. best to accept it than learn the hard
way.

it wouldn't really be fun if everything was sun and peaches.
the thing is that you have to distinguish between fun angry
posting and "real" angry posting.

There is a way, I'll try and find out but there's a
programme that stiches all your files together to make one
AVI, but I think, I think, it does leave in some marker so
you can flick between episodes. Let me 'ave a butchers....

You're right, if everyone got on in life, boy would it be
boring. Healthy arguments and debating makes for an
interesting read, but like you say: you have to know where
to draw the line between fun and malice.

yeah, I wasn't talking about the people posting the fun
angry posts.. they already know what they're posting. I was
talking about the person interpreting them.

you can normally see/know if a post is sincere.. granted it
is easier if you know what's the person is like (on the
internets at least), but it should still be possible to see.
Like with dogs usage of the word "pithy" up there. I had to
check the dictionary to see if it wasn't misspelled pity,
but I haven't got english as my primary language. Anyway, if
I only looked at his words, I would've thought he was
praising you... but then I added "dog_belch" and the current
circumstances to the equation, and figured it must've been
irony.

also: this is the internets. while I do care a bit about how
this board goes on (why else would I be getting into
arguments like these?), I don't really give much of a fuck
about what people think of me. I try not to aggrevate people
unneccessarily (like that topic you just made that got
closed), but if I happen to make someone dislike me, I
couldn't care less.

Well it does mean that but it also carries a negative
