thanks.

see, i don't think that blacks are choosing not to be
educated or go to jail. it's a perception of reality. it's
the way the reality is shaped for blacks in this country. i
live in chicago where over 50% of male blacks do NOT
graduate from high school and when i talk to them the
impression is always, "why go to school when i won't be able
to get a job anyway? why try when i can make money from
drugs 'cause that's what all my heroes are soing anyway?"
[you ever hear any popular hip hop songs rapping about going
to school?] most black kids i know understand that no matter
how hard they try they are not going to be on the same level
financially or whatever. and the media helps to create this
impression. successful blacks are mintrels, they are stupid
rich rappers or athletes or hot girls with fine asses. the
rest of the blacks are criminals. at least that's how it is
here in chicago and boston where i once lived.

what it comes down to is that they don't have the choice. if
a white dude gets pulled over and has some weed, he's not
going to jail. if he's black, he's locked up for maximum
sentence. that is really a fact in this city (my dad's a
cop).

tolstoyed, where do you live?

exactly, that is why i was saying all that stuff about how
parents should take a bigger role in it. if they're too
stupid (most of us are at that age), their parents should
take care of that and explain them facts of life as they
are.

im from slovenia, so my thoughts on this don't mean much :)

if you believe that they don't have the choice then they
will always be someone's victim.

where is there room for any personal responsibility in your
view?

plaid zebra -- i think you're right about the issue of
class. it's a broader type of discrimination in the us. but
i would say within the class discrimination, at least
statistically, blacks are at the bottom of the barrell.

also, to the dude who brought up the native americans -- i
am native american and it's truly horrible that this country
was founded on the murder of my people. and it goes on every
day, we are so marginalized it's ridiculous. we have
basically no rights at all, just like when columbus
arrived.

on a lighter note, i'm listening to afx remixes of st
etienne. this is really nice old school icbyd style, creamy
filters and what not.

whoa whoa, i'm not at all shirking the responsibility of
individuals. i'm not saying these kids are right or that the
ruling powers dictate every small decision of blacks. i'm
just trying to paint a picture of the impression that most
blacks face here.

but you guys are correct in suggesting that it's always up
to the individual. hell yes. it's just ridiculously harder
for blacks and they don't have as many options.

Hey, I was just explaining how I feel about those words. I'm
not asking you to stop using them or walk on eggshells.

Does the term "Cracker" refer to the sound a whip makes? Not
up on the origins of that word.

if anyone saw extras tonight you would have seen a prime
example of why i dont wish to panda around racist remarks or
ideas of race cos quite frankly it causes more problems

so bleh to this thread and its connotations that we should
all watch our words incase we offend someone
what a platypus
"note no offence is meant to the plight of the platypus etc
etc etc"
