he doesn't say idm in general...it's all about autechre
here...

well, it's not *all* about autechre. i know the tunnel
vision autechre syndrome round these parts pisses you off
tolstoy :)

but it's certainly not about music you can dance to and
would be played at a party, Jarworski.

"i know the tunnel
vision autechre syndrome round these parts"

you already noticed this, and you have been here for only
like a month...that says it all :)

oh the irony of it all.

after reading all this stuff yesterday on girls brains not
getting Ae as much as boys i ended up listening to a ton of
AE last night with an ex-girlfriend - who i had introduced
AE to -and in between conversation she would jump up and say
things like "oh.... i love the way this bit feels like a
metallic orange unpealing" or something.

She OWNED Autechre totally and the more abstract the better!

hi vletr, thanks for being nice even though I was talking
out of my ass a bunch. One reason everything I'm posting is
skewed is that I'm coming from the other direction--I want
to make computers act like better humans (yes, I'm working
on a fully general AI), so sometimes the mechanisms I give
for how the brain works are actually mechanisms by which
something like a computer could emulate the human brain.
Eh, which means I'm really talking out of my ass. I'll go
disappear no, goodbye. Sorry for yelling at you earlier, by
the way.

I would think that most of the crowd who turned up to watch
Aphex Plaid and Vibert would be at least acquainted with
Autechre. Most of what you've said in this thread is
interesting but the gender thing never convinces me.

do you really think that, if you got a list of all the
people who own a copy of confield, there would be as many
girls as boys?

i reckon it would be 95% males. total guess of course.

nice of you to comment. I always expect 10x more from
myself than I am capable of doing, so in general I'm too
self deprecated, but about once every 5 weeks I have a
period of turbo laziness wherein I really start bashing
myself, and that's where I am now.

yeah i got that impression, you clearly know a shitload more
than i do about computers.

this a project you're doing on your own?

do you play Go? i've always thought it interesting that Go
is one of the few games computers can't be programmed to
beat humans at. pattern recognition and all that. will be a
significant milestone when a superior Go A.I. is achieved.

the only person i know in real life who likes autechre is a
woman

so that leads me to say that real life people who like
autechre are 100% women

slightly erroneous logic don't you think? the only person i
can see holding a coffee cup right now is me, so therefore
100% of people who like coffee are slightly stoned medical
secretaries.

there are plenty of women into idm, but they like the more
warm stuff, rhythmic, possibly with organic sounds...and
well autechre aren't any of that. im sure the ratio of ae
fans would be something like 92%males-8%females.

I don't think women don't listen to IDM (it was a girl that
basically introduced me to aphex twin and squarepusher),

but I still think autechre is masculine.

yeah obviously there are girls into the broader IDM thing.
i'm talking jarring, glitchy, out of time beats with minimal
melody.

to take a different approach, how many female IDM producers
are there?

mira calix.... that's one.....erm...

What is the percentage of female participants in the xlt
community? 0%

that i'm slightly stoned?

always thought it was obvious :>

what's your approach for the AI thing? evolutionary
algorithms are where's it at, biatch. virtual genes and all
that.

oh, okay.

well that's why i unleashed 'my' theory on the xlt board, to
do a bit of unscientific data gathering, and of course to
generate some debate. if i just based it on girls i know
that like hardcore rhythmic autechre it would be 100% male,
but then a sample of the people that one person knows would
hardly be very representative would it?

and yes i know plenty of girls thankyou. *awards self a
medal*

I talk about facts... you about guesses

people I know (included me) who like autechre: 2

me = man
the other = woman

50% male and 50% female

bring me facts that can fight mine

however we do it it's not gonna be representative cos
there's a bias towards internet users. but fuck it, let's do
this.

males i know (in real life) that like confield/ep7/draft
autechre: 6
females i know that like c/ep7/d autechre: 0.

anybody else?

by the way, the interesting read from prof baron-cohen. for
those who despaired at the excessive length of my first
post.

i would also like to see how many other artists the biggest
ae fans heard. coz well, i often get this feeling they
mostly listen to same narrow group of artists, and are
therefore missing a lot of brilliant music that is being
released...

well, you too, ofcourse. but if you check polls, you can see
that always the same group of artists is selected, and most
of them are either on skam, rephlex, mu or warp...which is
really sad, coz there are thousands of other brilliant
artists. i also see this when people sometimes recomend less
familiar artists, and those threads usually get like 2
replys or so...ah well...it's all good :)

that's a nice list, but just what i was thinking...nothing
quite like autechre...you have many great artists, but none
of those can't be compared to autechre and their music.
that's it, im going to rip some stuff, and send it to you as
soon as possible.
