so creating this idea is not a reaction to the words? what,
then, does the creation of this idea come from? do you just
create it at random in your head and then start objecting to
it, or was it a result of you hearing certain words and then
interpreting them (which you were forced to do, btw)?

and sentences are most definately not always transparent. of
course some of them are, but there are more than enough
ambiguous sentences around.. it's hard for me to think some
up in english, but I believe you should be able to find some
of your own (if you are indeed a native english speaker,
that is)... right now I can only come up with a rather silly
example, "it's a pilot!" which could mean both that
something is a person who knows how to fly an airplane and
that it is a "test-episode"/first episode of a tv-show. of
course, this one would be clearer in a real life situation,
and I may come up with a better example if I get some time..
the ones I can think up in norwegian won't translate...

If you don't beleive Racism is a wide spread, try to donate
some money to that starving white country I see on the news
all the time ...

OH WAIT it doesn't exist.

"What does that have to do with Racism?"
Well, the fact that most don't care about anything that
doesn't live on thier own soil could be one thing ...

that's called conditioned response. I don't really
think I need to say more... you can train yourself not to
flinch when poked with a needle, but that doesn't mean you
aren't reacting to being poked; your response is doing
nothing, you're not ignoring the pain and the army man isn't
ignoring the words he's quite simply reacting by not doing
anything in particular.

oh, they do.. words force you into interpreting them and
reacting to them. you can silently agree or disagree or fail
to understand what is being said, prompting a question
(usually "what?").. if you hear a word, you react and it's
not like you're reacting to nothing, is it? you're reacting
to the word you're reacting to...

you're asking me to backtrack to a degree that's not
possible.

i've obviously not made myself entirely clear. by
transparent, i mean that the individual is not actively
aware of the process. when i say you operate a transparent
belief, i mean that you operate it without being aware of
the operation. if you doubt the existence of transparent
beliefs, i'd recommend reading up on disorders of
personality.

i apologize for any frustration or confusion i've
engendered, but as much as i would like to respond to the
issues you raise, i can do no more than a very quick sketch
as i am at work and filling in occasional gaps with
xltronic.

i'm operating a model that is significantly different than
the model you are operating, and until we each get a better
idea of each of those models we're going to continue to talk
past each other.

it was asserted that individuals have no choice but to react
to some words with anger and by being upset. i'm
paraphrasing one position.

my point is that you can change your mind. words are tools
to transmit ideas, and you can change how you feel about
those ideas. you're reacting to ideas, and beliefs, not the
words. you can reject an idea. you can change how you
feel, and you are not powerless in the face of words. this
is why i say words are harmless. i'm not saying it's always
easy to change your mind, because you've been trained to
react instantly to words and ideas.
but i think it's in everyone's best interests to resist
reacting reflexively to words and ideas (by becoming upset
or angry).

Racism Wiki

My elementary school Principle had a brother who was a
famous white supremacist author who wrote that the holocost
never happened.

If you can only imagine how fun it was for my Columbian
brother to attend this school not knowing much english ...
This was in the 1980's so there was no NEW-AGE TREAT KIDS
WITH COMPASSION trends yet.

This is going to sound really fake, but this is true, my
brother once spit on the school playground and was brought
to the office. The principle forced him to fill an entire
bucket of spit as a punishment.

I don't think he finished the whole bucket it, but he was in
the office for a while.

The fucker made me sit in MUD once and some of the comments
the teacher made to other students or different ethnic
backgrounds were so ... whitetrash that if I had any idea
about any north american laws at that age (5) I'd surely
whould have done something about it.

Anyone else have some stories of Racism?

when i was in university a group of african american
students stormed the offices of the school newspaper
demanding that an african-american student be installed on
the editorial staff. they argued that the fact that there
were no african-american students on the editorial staff was
proof that the newspaper was racist. the people who were on
the editorial staff were there because they had applied for
the position. no african-american students had applied to
work on the editorial board.

in my dormitory there was an african-american student who
had mostly friends who were white. most other
african-american students at this school would not associate
with him because he didn't act "black" enough. they called
him an "oreo," black on the outside, and white on the
inside.

my roommate was half "white", half "hispanic." because of
his racial heritage, he was accepted at the university even
though his grades and ACT test results were far below the
ordinary standards for acceptance. he was a middle class
kid and was not disadvantaged socially or economically.

so you're saying that i shouldn't respond to issues that are
brought up by other people? what are you, the thread

why not read the thread yourself, and discern why this

i would not say i have many friends offline, but i do have
friends offline. i would probably say that i don't have any
friends online, since i post mainly inbetween this and that
at work, not at home, and i generally don't frequent places
that people visit to chat online. thanks for taking an

so you want personal stories from my youth about when white
people shat upon minorities unfairly due to racist
motivations?

if i had such stories, i'd tell them. my parents raised me
to absolutely reject racism. i've never interacted much
with racist people.

never did i say that my *personal* experiences represented
or reflected the world at large. you're just nitpicking

The newspaper story is a good example of extreme (and
ignorant) action that really does more damage then good.
And probably skewed people’s perspective of that group of
people at your faculty.

The Oreo thing happens a lot. Segregation isn't just a
Caucasian mentality.

There does tend to be favorable opportunities for different
ethnic backgrounds in North America. Where the persons
heritage tends to be a gimmick that what ever institution
wants to associate themselves with.

Like we all have our GAY friend, and our BLACK friend, and
our JAPANESE friend. I totally agree that this happens very
often where someone is favored for these reasons.

I think it is the ignorance that does the damage (or boosts)
the ego.

What do you think?

you seemed to be implying i have no friends offline, which
seems an unkind thing to say. you didn't seem to reply

...so there's no black or white, there's only GREY.

if you're white and if you walk into a black hood/district

you make some very good points.

for me, the essence of racism is viewing an individual of
any race as a representative of their collective perceived
race. it seems like you can't take pride in your racial
heritage without pushing away people who don't share your
racial heritage. why take pride in something that you have
no control over and didn't contribute to in any way? and
what about people who are neither "hispanic" or "black" or
"white"? are they expected to only identify with people
with their precise racial heritage?

you have to work at seeing the whole person, and not just
the "blackness" or "gayness" or "bald" or "handicapped."

"for me, the essence of racism is viewing an individual of
any race as a representative of their collective perceived
race. "

I totally agree. Stereo types (mostly fueled by TELEVISION
and MOVIES) really can fuck over a person. The best example
I can give would be the Muslim community.
Most people have no idea what the difference between
Islamist and Muslims are. Why? Because it wasn't a Will and
Grace Episode yet. And there is a massive difference.

"are they expected to only identify with people
with their precise racial heritage? "

They are expected to be able to identify with their own
racial heritage. BUT sometimes it is very comforting to meet
up with someone with the same background as you; I'll give
you an example.

When you meet a person in real life that listens to your
favorite band (let's say Autechre). You tend to feel a bit
more comfortable (for whatever physiological reason) talking
and being around that person(s). The RACE isn't so much the
catalyst of identification as much as it is the IDEA that
someone is LIKE YOU that manifests into a relationship based
(oh fuck here I go) on FACTOR X (race, music, hometown,
website preference).

"you have to work at seeing the whole person, and not just
the "blackness" or "gayness" or "bald" or "handicapped.""

I completely agree with you.
