dude it was a joke
shit
i guess i just have a skewed outlook, all my black friends
muck about make racist jokes at me(cracker) ,they call me
coon or nigger. it doesnt offend me , i know it doesent
offend them because thier the ones making the jokes

prime example
me and my best mate mike were racing to the shop and he
shouts to me "You'll never win man, you know us black people
are better at sports than you"
he see's no offence in taking the mick out of a racial
setreo type and i dont see the harm. i dont really make
racist jokes at him or anything but hes not really bothered
about it

i think you should have more mental strength in order to not
be so offended by words which frankly i hear 24/7 and not
form white people from fucking rap music. and lets face rap
is rammed down everyones throat if u listen to radio 1 or
watch mtv

the problem that most of you are missing is the simple fact
that "two wrongs don't make a right". just because there
are certain people of all races making racist comments or
stereotypes doesn't mean it's ok for you to do. that should
be well fucking obvious as most of us here are not little
kids.

now i'm not even suggesting that there should be any sort of
censorship. i'm just saying think before you say something.
be aware that to different people (and we on this board are
all from different countries and different cultures), racist
words will have different effects. so you may want to think
twice before using a racial slur as you can't be sure how it
will be taken.

it's insane to think there are people on this eart who are
actually concerned with the colour of one persons skin. i
guess that isn't so in the states, but overhere we don't see
any harm in racist jokes because we don't see the problem
like americans do. we don't say you're black, you're
white..hence, we can deal with it with humour. i suppose we
will have to be more cereful about what we say in the
future. i've been told many times that i don't know when to
stop joking about something, but that's just the way i am. i
would never want to offend someone though.

you have totally missed the point. let me recap for you
what happened:

a bunch of white guys sat around making jokes about
"niggers". a black guy took offense (for some craaaaazy
reason - i can't imagine whyyyyyy) and went, hold on, that's
not cool. then he was called a nigger by more white guys
and his thread was closed. then a bunch of people went,
"oh, really? you don't like that word? well, gee... let's
come up with excuses for using racist terms because we've
been caught! tee hee!" and perhaps sincere apologies
followed but still some people couldn't understand why
anyone would think that a racist term actually implied
racism!

Two grains of salt meet each other on the way down to some
french fries. All the other grains of salt are in a state of
panic but not these two salts, who are contented with their
fate. As a grain of salt, your ultimate destiny is to be
tossed onto some food; this is the way of the condiment.
Time passes much slower for salt than for man. Every man
second is at least 5 minutes for salt.

As these two grains are falling they look around with their
little salty eyes at their panic stricken companions. While
the rest of the salting community are worried by this mighty
fall, these two unique salts are contemplating their
strategy for when they meet their arch enemy: PEPPER.
Luckily for some salts: there are humans who do not put
pepper on their food, unlucky for others: there are humans
who DO! When salt and pepper come face to face it is not a
pretty sight. The two battle out to bring out the dominating
flavour in food. Pepper usually comes out on top. Salt has
gathered a reputation in the spice rack as being the weakest
of all. Talisman and Latentspeak, the two calm grains, want
to change this. They are tired of having to bow their heads
in shame, especially to those Robertson's spices who think
they are god's gift to potatoe wedges! As they are about to
land they think about taking action. But, they miss the
plate; they hit the tablecloth! Later on that evening, a few
salt hours later, Talisman and Latentspeak are wiped away
along with a few of their salty brothers.

well, that's the impression i have..that blacks and whites
don't hang out together or live in the same area (the
majority). i don't know why that is. i remember when i was
in the primary school we had one african american boy join
us for one semester..everyone wanted to be his friend and he
was friends with everyone, i don't know whether children
percept it that different or it has a lot to do with how
someone is brought up. young black people seem to be left
out on their own rather soon..probably being told about
racism all the time..as long as parents won't know better
the problem won't go away..
by 'fit in' i meant that they should perhaps try and think
about the fact that not every white person is a racist, that
infact there are very few and most of white people don't
care about what colour of skin one has..that would surely
take a lot of tension away..ofcourse this is much easier to
say than do..
that last part was a bit of a joke, therfore the smiley,
although it's partly what i think - that's another
impression i got - they just don't want to see them as
people, but as black people, because they simply feel
there's this big unjustice being done to them..
im not black so i can't possibly understand how it feels to
be black, but from my point of view that is how i see it..i
wish my english was better so i could explain it
properly..but, if i sum it up, i think that past shouldn't
be forgotten, although it should be put aside in everyday
life..

In south africa there is racism, with racial slurs being
used freely, but this is mostly among the older generation
who have been indoctrinated with years of propaghanda. The
younger generation (mostly black, coloured, indian and white
middle class students) seem to get along fine. We all party
and get drunk together. The only black people i ever hang
out with who live in squater camps ("ghetto" areas) are the
rastas who i buy weed from and they're always more than
happy to have you hang out and smoke a chillum with them. 11
years after the end of apartheid in South Africa and I can
honestly say there is very little racial tension. Quite
amazing really, but then again i'm sure a lot goes on that
i'm not aware of. I'd say the word "kaffer" is pretty much a
dirty word and no one uses it because of the apartheid
connotations. I see where your coming from mertens but i
don't really see the need to make an issue of it on the
board. I don't really know where this ties in with the rest
of the discussion, but there you go, my 2 cents (i still
think my salt story was pretty good and tolstoyed actually
got it!).

regarding the generalizations about "america" and
"americans," consider the size of the united states.

where i live, there are large numbers of ethiopians who fled
the civil war, and hmong people, as well as native
americans, and south american immigrants of many origins.
the stereotypical "minnesotan" is of
swedish/norwegian/finnish origin. but it's totally
different in los angeles, seattle, new york, new orleans,
chicago, atlanta etc etc etc.

in some places, there's little racial tension, with
significant integration. in other places, there are mainly
so-called white people mainly. we also have very large
populations of hispanic people.

hi everybody, this is my first post here. i came here 'cause
of my love for autechre and afx and i saw this thread about
racism and would like to share my opinion.

there seems to be an overwhelming consensus here that racism
against blacks is an historical event that has no modern
significance. most of the posts have stressed this opinion
that no one cares if you're black or that the word nigger
only keeps old wounds from healing.

i find this to be totally wrong in the case of the united
states where racism against blacks has been essential to the
country's history for centuries. the fact is, although
blacks are no longer explicitly the slaves of the whites,
their necks are still under the boots of white opressors. in
every single instance of poverty, imprisonment, education,
income, housing, employment, etc. ad nauseum blacks are at
the very bottom of the totem.

blacks remain the most impoverished races in this country
owning only one percent of the wealth as oppossed to the .1
they owned the first year of abolishion. blacks are the most
unemployed, the most imprisoned. if you travel to the any
poor city in this country, chances are most of its
inhabitants are black, in fact, the poorer you go the
blacker it gets.

this is racism. pure and simple. blacks are NOT afforded the
same or even remotely similar opportunities as any other
race.

so the word nigger does not refer to an historical
suffering, rather it invokes the omnipresent discrimination
against black people in this country. the ratio of
imprissoned blacks to whites in the us is greater than that
of south africa surring the aprtheid.

and the word nigger is property of the blacks. it's their
word, we can say nothing about how they use it. we gave it
to them, ingrained it in them.

but why? you did the same thing when i started a thread
about wiggers. i dont ever use he word nigger unless im
pretedning to be a rapper and i said wigger on the msg board
and it became a debate about racism which i feel was
unecassery because if you felt it was meant in a racist way
then yous eriously do have paranoia issues. i mean no
offence to you man but seriously i think we should just
chill the fuck out

ISM's are everywhere not just racism, sexism, facism, christ
theres even idmism

its a fact of life
people are inherantly different
not inferior different
just different
and somepeople dislike certain differences. ill be honest if
there is a race thats been fucked over the most its
blaitently the american indians, more so than black people
by far i mean christ the majority of thier race has been
wiped out
as the tshirt says
"american indians - fighting terrorism since 1492 (not sure
thats the right date)"

fuck look now im worrying im offenidng americans by talking
about the indians

for christ sake i wont watch my words round here. the thing
i like about this board is the open way people talk, theres
no angling around sometihng people just say it in a relaxced
way

we are all people but we are individuals some people choose
to say certain things other dont why reiterate differences
again and again? you are achieving nothing except peoples
annoyance at you inability to let a sleeping dog lie

i think you missed a lot of posts in this thread. i also
think that the problems in the united states are problems of
class discrimination primarily and not of race. poor
"white" people face precisely the same roadblocks as poor
"black" people. consider also the genocide against native
americans, the strict laws in the early 20th century that
outlawed citizenship for people of asian origin, or the
internment of people of asian origin during ww2 (their jobs
were lost, their homes were taken etc etc).

i'm not trying to turn this into a "what's wrong with the us
thread," but the assertion that only blacks have suffered
persecution/oppression here is flatly wrong.

as a matter of fact, when i went to college in the united
states, if you were black, the standards for entry were much
lower, and you had to pay very little tuition. if you were
white, it did not matter how poor you were, you faced higher
standards for entry and you got little tuition assistance.
this was at the university of illinois in champaign-urbana.
