naked lunch is one of my all time favorites, but how to defend it?
i agree with qrter, individuals who assert that people only like a film to appear cool or because it's perceived to be a "classic" make this assertion likely because they themselves have operated the very same pretense at some point. although there is no question that at some point some individuals *have* claimed to enjoy a film they didn't understand (or appreciate) so as to not appear stupid (or unsophisticated), the suggestion that a film's entire reputation would be founded on a shallow pretense such as this is ridiculous.
naked lunch is a prime candidate for this assertion. it's likely the least obvious commercial film you will ever see, and will leave many scratching their heads.

well in my opinion, she's been good in the few films i've see her in. Edward Scissorhands, Girl Interrupted, Bram Stokers Dracula... she needs to work with Tim Burton more.

sadly, Alien: Ressurrection is an even bigger wankfest than "Aliens". don't get me wrong, "Aliens" isn't all that great, but it is better than A:R, imo.
I see it as a bigger wankfest simply because of the buckets of needless gore - EVERY bit of violence is explicit in this film. this combined with X-tomatic's point about the comicbook style make the violence non-threatening, just disgusting.
I agree with X-tomatic's other points too, btw. and I do think W. Ryder is miscast - she can't pull a role of that kind off.

i liked alien ressurection and i liked T3 alot. most of the other films you guys have listed i havent even fucking heard of so you must be watching pure crap.
the worst film i saw recently was the league of extraordinary gentlemen. it blew so much i cant believe that sean connery is cool. he should of killed himself halfway through.

ahem...I like Naked Lunch because...well I like it....I am huge fan of Burroughs...this film barely scratches the surface of the complexity and brilliance of the book...by no means an adaptation...merely a peek into the rich and mesmerising universe created by Burroughs for the trilogy....and yet it has been reviled as one of the most perplexing movies ever

the comic book style you are refering to is actually what I find refreshing about the movie as well as the sheer explicitness of it all...harks back to the classic Metal Hurlant style of trashy European sci fi sensibilities...I mean frankly how many times are you going to take the Alien popping up from behind a dark metallic tunnel seriously?
Secondly it had a comic book sensibility most probably to pay homage to the dark Horse series of comic books which has produced some fantastic material...the harnessing of Alien DNA and harvesting Alien Human hybrids is concept directly off the pages of the comic..and a timely booster shot in the arm of a franchise otherwise doomed to repeat it self...over and over...

"I mean frankly how many times are you going to take the Alien popping up from behind a dark metallic tunnel seriously?"
I would rather have NO more films than a kneejerk reaction like just upping the gore level. not very imaginative.
I know the Dark Horse comics and I think that idea is okay, executed quite badly, making the film just repeat old ideas and cheap scares from the earlier movies.
with the relative realism which made "Alien" such a chilling film now completely gone, A:R tries to find horror in gore, but fails quite miserably, trying to cover up a tawdry an cliched script with flashy special effects.

yes, I am a fan of Jeunet. just because I don't like this poorly scripted film I couldn't be?
it's silly to ask me to come up with a better script-idea here, on the spot. that's like saying I can't criticize anything until I can do better - which shuts up most of us, then.
I will say this - the first 30 minutes or so of the film do start okay - then the quality drops drastically when the film becomes just another sci-fi action romp with gory effects.

Not only that, it had everything a great sequel to a great classic needed. I'm annoyed how people always portray it as a mere action flick while there was just so much more to it. Sometimes they're just bashing the movie because they hate James Cameron for reasons unknown (titanic).
To me it had an equal (if not more) amount of suspence, nervewrecking moment, frantic pacing, horror moments, appropriate humor, but most of all criminally overlooked amazing acting and perfect casting. Also the excellent sets come to mind, this is one reason why I love Cameron, he wants everything to have a purpose. The sense of realism is nice. The loader for example was his design and the way it works looks absolutely believable and the way it comes back in the final showdown with the bitch is perfect. Loads of classic moments in the movie "game over man" anyone?
in short: Fuck all the naysayers.
