I wouldn't mind your point of view that much if you could

i was on a school trip in london last week, to go and see
the Musical "Les Miserables". It was awful, so over the top
it was unbelievable! Me and my 2 friends were the only ones
not to stand up while clapping at the end. The performers
performed well, but what they were performing was awful :-/

I'm sure lots of people just liked it because everyone else
seemed to. We were talking to another boy from our music
class, and when we said it was crap he called us
"saddos"..... lol, i laughed so much.

hmmm 2am, got school 2moro (2day!!)....

military school, is reticent and rebellious at first, but
then discovers that a military school can be FUN.

I'm wondering what the likes of marlowe see as the
alternative to the current societal structure. That's what
it is, see, *structure*. Without that structure things would
be much more messed up, unless of course you have an even
remotely realistic alternative?

socialism is where the governance of society is geared
towards helping everyone, and where all machinations are
geared towards helping everyone. Capitalism is geared
towards the individual looking after Self and making a nice
pile of money for himself with no social responsibility.
That's a very brief description.

No, everything we do as humans is selfish. There is no such
thing as a selfless act. Capitalism is merely a
manifestation of human nature.

Well, I think he's right. Everything you do, you do for
yourself. Even when you help people, it's because it makes
you feel good.

Now, the role of society should be to prevent excessive
selfishness, not to encourage it.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2003-07-22 06:08 [#00789203]
Points: 24590 Status: Lurker | Followup to dariusgriffin: #00789198

We are taught to be selfish, from infancy. And we are
pressured to remain somewhat selfish throughout our life by
having the 'keep up with the Joneses' mentality thrust in
our faces almost constantly.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if these
were taken away. The only Selfishness we have is
Self-Preservation. Seeing as most selfless acts won't end in
death or maiming, I doubt this instinct would kill in. The
Selfish Gene doesn't refer to our whole, but merely to
making sure our DNA lasts one more generation.

You guys really are lost in bullshit. Lol.

I think what Marlowe wants is the benefits of those who work
their fucking arses off to make a serious succcess of their
lives. Heh Marlowe you already get 40% of their earnings,
33% corporation tax and benefit indirectly from the numerous
charitable foundations which receive funds from business and
high networth individuals but thats not enough for you. What
do you so badly need over them, you've got food haven't you,
you've got a PC, you've got entertainment, you've got a bed
to sleep in and clothes to wear; I think you're the greedy
one? Why not try and make something of your own life instead
of taking from others. They're the ones who've had to go
through serious toll and unrelenting hard work to achieve
what they have, not you! You're the selfish person here and
you don't even realise it. You have no clue whatsoever what
it takes for people to make successes of their lives, to
create wealth and subsequently to create jobs. You're so
utterly clueless its sad. You wouldn't even begin to know.
And don't even believe for a second that you've got what it
takes or that if you wanted what they have achieved you
could do it - that is a fools paradise. So please shut up
and think for a moment before I come down there and give you
and good slap around the face. Lol.

SO you're saying that the CEO of a big company who goes in
for 2 hours a day, maximum, runs the company into the red,
and still gets a £2,000,000 bonus at the end of the year,
works harder than the employees who sweat it out 8 hours a
day getting £5 per hour?

Marlowe,

Please, the majority of people don't have what it takes to
even get half way up the ladder to running a big company.
They don't want to go through the effort and stress that
that envolves. They like to delude themselves that they
could but they can't. They like the ease and assurance of a
simple job. They bitch and moan about it which is standard
fair but basically they don't want to do anything. I think
you've got a lot to learn. I mean afterall if you're at Uni
or College, which I assume you are, what are you expected to
know about the real world?

dariusgriffin,

Thats a good joke if it is one.

You're talking as if running a big company is everyone's
ideal. Maybe many people just aren't that interested in
leading such a meaningless existence, and are in chains
because the ones who ARE interested in making lots of money
are making sure that Society is geared to THEIR way of
thinking.

Being aware of how things are doesn't mean I have to accept
them, or give up my principles.

When you talk about Freedom of Choice, what freedom is
there? If you don't bow down to the system and act like a
shallow capitalist, you'll end up poor and living like shit,
all because you happen not to agree that spending your life
grubbily chasing money and material goods while wasting your
life working for some Company that doesn't give a fuck, for
40+ hours per week is the way to enlightenment. But, if
you're soulless and ruthless, you're OK, and you can crawl
your way to the top of the ladder and shit on everyone else.
Real Open-Minded attitude you're espousing.

marlowe,

That is the whole point, that in a capitalist society at
least you have the choice. You can live like a hermit or
choose to live otherwise. What you say are all your own
words and interpretation of things, not mine and not others.
If you see working 40 hours a week and getting paid for it
as wrong then fine. It could be far worse you could actually
be forced to work 40 hours a week and not get paid at all.
Your problem is that you only see one course in life and
therefore you want to penilise others who don't see things
in the same limited fashion as you do. Your perception of
things is totally clouded and restricted. I mean lets get
real chum what the fuck are you going to do with your life,
just sit on your arse making music - please? Again I'll
repeat what I've said already. You clearly have no concept
as to what it takes to achieve the successes of those who do
at any level in society or wherever you deem it to be. Yes
you can choose to be a loser in life and espouse loser
views. I think clearly you are one of those, again your
choice. And yes I am being patronising definitely, because
it is like talking to a child who wants what others have and
for little effort because he doesn't have what it takes to
get/achieve them for himself.

Points: 24590 Status: Lurker | Followup to promo: #00789372

My life isn't about making music - that's not terribly
important to me. What's important to me is the fact that
Society is corrupt and unfair.

And you completely missed my point RE: working 40+ hours per
week. If you'd get off your smug plush high-horse and stop
being bedazzled by your own patronising attitude, you might
actually start seeing some of the points people are making,
instead of sounding like you're just blindly quoting your
economics teacher.

Economics teacher, sweet. Chum I'm well past all that
bullshit. Skool of hardknocks is where I come from. Oh and I
think you're the one who is blindly following some bullshit
fantasy way in which the world should be. Don't preach to me
about what is fair, you think it was fair on your employee
to be out of it all the time. Thats a pretty corrupt and
deceitful way of working if you ask me.

You're just not getting me. You want something for nothing
and you ain't gonna get it. So unless you are prepared to do
what most other normal human beings do and work for what
they want, I suggest you shut your silly trap.
