Why complain about doing interviews?

There's a theme of disliking having to do press for music
running through comments from the likes Mr.Jenkinson,
Autechre, Aphex Twin, etc. - as well as lots of other
bands.

I understand the procoess of making music can be hard to
quanitfy in words and all that, but I mean, it can't be that
bad, can it? I mean - oh no - people have an interest in
your music and they want you to talk about it. How awful!

Their skewed perception has placed them into a snobbed-out
alcove from where they view the musical press with
hostility?

most music journalists really suck though

Good electronic musicians tend not to come across well in
interviews. If they have a laugh it pisses fan boys off
because they haven't listed their equipment. If they do it
seriously they sound like total knobs.

I will never be in the situation of having to do interviews
for my music but if I was I could never explain why I did
something because I don't even know.

I will never be in the situation of having to read music
journalism.

El señor Tom Jenkinson gives long lenghty interviews,
you're crazy CS2x, even Ricardo D James gives and always
gave interviews, you have no point whatsoever!

What he said is still correct because he said 'situation of
having to read' and he didn't have to even if he did,
so there fags.

that's a bit harsh... while it's true that both Jenki and
RDJ have given interviews (some better than others) before,
there is still some merit to what CS2x is saying... More
than a few musicians seem to express displeasure in dealing
with journalists, or at least it seems so to me.

I was half joking, c'mon I even used an exclamation point
for Pete's sake but it's still valid, RDJ is a natural
maestro on his marketing, it's all a play, if you read some
of his 200 and more interviews you can tell that he knows
what to say and what not, he never reveals too much because
he knows that mystery sells since that keeps people talking
about him/gear/techniques, Squarepusher is also always happy
to give interviews, there's even a video interview where he
shows his studio.

Mystery sell period, some need it more than others, some
others are just plain weird even in real life like Gerald
Donald.

Hehe, you clearly know what you're talking about here. I've
only read a handful of articles on any particular artist,
but I have noticed the trend in RDJ's interviews that you
mention.

I should've known you were joking.. I wasn't sure if you
were serious but I was just looking out for CS2x :)

I just don't think it's that much different when you compare
to other artists, actors, etc, also IDM is serious
business!

And yes on a very lazy afternoon I've read all those RDJ
insterviews from that .doc it was interesting to find his
influences and how the mystery connects to his appreciation
with Drexciya who untill the death of the main man behind
it, no one really knew who they were.

the world! This was maybe six or seven years ago.

There's some interesting responses here. I agree that RDJ is
playing a very clever game with his marketing. I think if
you get too familiar in your approach then the mystery dies,
and that doesn't help the "buzz" or sales.

I know Squarepusher and Ae and plenty of other bands do
quite lengthy interviews on lots of occasions, but within
those interviews I can remember plenty of remarks pointing
towards what a pain it is to do those interviews or to talk
about the music in general. In fact, a recent snobby remark
in a Squarepusher interview sparked this thread off, but I
can't remember which one it was. :-(

Artists in the ambient scene are quite different, and it's
refreshing to see. People like Robert Rich and Steve Roach
actually seem to enjoy talking about their music and sharing
their approach to it with the media and with fans directly.
It doesn't need to be about sharing anal technical info or
saying why you put that sound here or there. There are lots
of other areas to explore in conversation connected with
music making.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that usually
journalists have no idea who there talking to and will ask
crap questions that have been asked a million times over,
then take what you've said and bend it all to their own
ends, then an editor will come down and chop it all up until
there's nothing left apart from "I hate Underworld", and
then the artist has to spend the next 10 years explaining
why they said that in an interview when they probably didn't
anyway and it just spirals down and down and down.

What influences you? How do you make your music? What other
music do you like? Is IDM dead? What does drukqs / campfire
headphase / Freak / electro / acid / etc mean?
