David Bowie - Low

Man,

I love this album. The second side, all the ambiet stuff.
It's excellent. I think it should have been called "David
Bowie and Brian Eno - Low" though, because it's just as much
Eno as it is Bowie.

Anyone else in here like it?

My mate is a big Bowie fan and taped Low and Heroes for me.
I keep meaning to give it a listen. I've got Eno's Ambient 1
which is class. Any recommendations for more Eno?

It's brilliant! Probably more thanks to ENO than Bowie. I
think it's the best album he did, Heroes is almost as good.
It must have been the first mainstream pre-electronica
record.
I'm gonna dig it out again and have a listen. Thanks for
reminding me ...

yeah this album is one of my favorite bowie works.
i saw him live a few years ago at the Paramount in seattle
and he played a couple of those ambient tracks; subteraneans
and something else. it was agreat show too. Bowie really
likes seattle and was very personable to the crowd.

Bowie is ze man.......eno's not too bad either. hehehhe =0)

eno but watermelon man's suggestions are good....i've heard
two of them =)

Yeah, I'm a big overall Bowie fan too. I thought that the
people on this board would be into Low (it.s probably my
favourite Bowie album, the ambient pieces are so haunting),
but I'm also a fan of his poppier, guitar-y stuff. Hunky
Dory is a classic - Queen Bitch, Quicksand, etc. Diamond
Dogs is amazing, and loads of his singles are well good.

I used to sing in a Bowie tribute band!

I love some of Bowie's stuff too. Diamond Dogs etc. The Man
Who Sold the World is class.

Nitrate and all that. Anyone else?

low is a stunning album-'alwats crashing in the same
car'ooohhhh-have you heard heroes? there are some class
bowie /eno composistions on the flip side. i love hunky dory
as well, queen bitch is a fantastic tune...

Well, Bowie has done some total shit in his time too. The
DnB was pretty awful (although I thought Little Wonder was
OK). Also, Tin Machine were abysmal.

yeah, I've heard this is probably mostly Eno, but on the cd
Eno is only listed as a co-writer on one song... and as a
keyboard player and stuff... so who says he had such a huge
influence? I've always heard he did...

A New Career in a New Land, or whatever it is, is such an
amazing song... it's one of those songs which make me feel
for those few minutes that the world is alright... that
everything is ok... then it stops, and all the crap comes
back...

incidentally there's a pretty rare electronic tribute to
"Low" called "After Low".. the only famous artist on it is
matmos who cover "A New Career in a New Land". the cd is
included w/ a book.

low is far from "mostly Eno", funk. some say it's 50/50
bowie/eno but i'd say it's more like 60/40 bowie/eno. still
very significant but bowie's role is not to be underplayed
(just look at all the instruments he's credited to playing
in the liner notes).

well yeah, ok... maybe not mostly... but I had read he had a
big part to play... and in the booklet he's listed as a
keyboard player, and maybe some more stuff, and he co-wrote
one of the songs... I don't see what big huge part he played
from that...

yea we discussed this before.. they did writing credits
differently back then (if you didn't write the lyrics or the
main melody you didn't get a credit) as well as producer
credits. maybe back then eno didn't know how to really
produce a band or singer, just how to play instruments. i
have no idea, i haven't read a bio so i don't know when he
really honed his producer chops (my guess would be his work
w/ the talking heads a few years later).

yeah i was about to point out that as well... i think a lot
of people dont realise just how experimental bowie is/was...

nod, I know... I just wonder how people really know Eno
played such a big part if it's not said so on the liner
notes...

and I always though, from what I read before buying Low,
that Brian Eno was the producer on the Berlin albums... I
was surprised to see he wasn't...

called "some are".. check that track out... its very good...
then get the phillip glass version and it'll blow you away.

eno was the producer of the berlin albums. if you want to
say collaborator, fine, but in today's terms he'd definitely
be labeled the (co-)producer.

his role on low and the other albums is greater discussed in
books, articles, and interviews.

"some are" is terrific!

theres some Bowie instrumentals on there that are

err...Low is one of the two Berlin albums (other
being "Heroes") - and no, he didn't produce any of them, or
Lodger.

It was Bowie and Visconti.

David Bowie also seems like the most down to earth person
you'd meet... I mean he's one of the most successful
musicians around as far as sales probably, critical acclaim,
and just net worth... he's one of the riches musicians
around ain't he? And yeah, he's been critically acclaimed
throughout his career, and he's world famous, etc, etc...
yet he always seems so down to earth, and just a plain nice
guy... he's hilarious too... so yeah, I have a lot of
respect for David Bowie on many levels... as a person,
musician, business man, etc...

no, there were three, you forgot lodger which is also
considered part of the trilogy.

It was Bowie and Visconti.

yes, i know. but by the definition these kids have of what a
"producer" is, eno would fit. at the time he was just a
musician and co-writer but because of all the treatments he
did he'd be considered a co-producer today.
