I remember that thread.... it's got to be some type of
ignorance on the part of the artists. I just can't believe
that folk who make music that good, that emotional, that
vulnerable, etc., could pimp it out like that on purpose,
being fully aware of the cruelty (yes, dammitt, the
CRUELTY!!!) of using beautiful music to help sell huge
corporate shit....

Moby 'Fucking everything'
Nina Simone 'Feeling Good'
ABC 'Look of Love'
Velvet Underground 'Venus in Furs' (well tyres)
...

Hey, who cares if they play some BoC over an advert? It
doesn't change the music at all. The band will get a heap of
money for it - which they probably won't for their album. I
think the more that people know about bands like BoC, the
better.

It is definately a sad day if this is indeed BoC on the
commercial....=(

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-03-18 10:04 [#00129872]
Points: 6650 Status: Lurker

I see your point. However people aren't going to get into
BOC through an advert. That only really happens with a film
soundtrack as you can check the credits for tunes.

For me, this reeks of selling out.

And I hate it when you hear a tune/song and think of the
advert it was on. That kills music for me.

keeping an OPTIMISIC mind) =)

I don't get it. I love to hear Aphex or whoever on TV
adverts. His SAW II album probably gets more airplay on BBC
2 adverts than it has ever got on the radio. Anyway, their
seems to be some kind of reflex in people so that whenever
an artist makes any money they are accused of selling out.
This is just nonsense. Surely we should be encouraging the
use of bands like BoC on adverts, especially when the
alternatives are so plainly banal.

But doesn't anyone think adverts are an art-form, rather
than just a way of selling products? Spike Lee makes adverts
just like he makes films, and Black Dog released an album
called 'Music For Adverts and Short Films'. And how cool was
it to hear 'The Garden of Cinmiri' on the TV when that
Pirelli advert came out?

Btw, Ken Downie hates the commercial world, so the title
'Music For Adverts and Short Films' was meant for a laugh...
;-)

Just the thought of all of those "Corporate assholes" at BMW
sitting in a room looking on the net for the top
selling"downtempo" groups on AMAZON or something and than
using them in their ads. Makes me very sick. Like Jonsey
said, I would never become a fan of a group from a short
commercial clip, and I am sure this commercial is NOT gonna
make a whole lot of people BoC fans now...And would we
really be able to consider them fans?...Hmmm.
Ok Ok...maybe I am a little tooo harsh...
Like I had said before, is there NOTHING sacred anymore? I
held BoC very close and personal to my heart, kinda
something that only a little number of people knew about in
this world of music, and I could share thoughts with you
guys on em....Now I do not want to think of BMW when I think
of them....

I am kinda a prick like that....I guess I like knowing of a
group that is pure genius and NOT having the general public
know about em.....

But that's just me....

Sorry for babbling

I agree that when you begin to associate a tune you like
with an advert it can spoil it. However, what you have to
remember is that these guys are trying to make a living from
their music, and when a big fat company like BMW offers them
cash for their music, then it's going to be hard to say no.

I also like to think of it this way: whether BoC let BMW
use their music or not, BMW will sell loads of cars. I
really doubt that some BoC in an advert will increase BMW
sales. However, it will give BoC some cash. So I kind of
like to think that BoC are benefiting financially from the
deal to a much greater extent than are BMW.

Also, if people do like the music on the advert, then they
will find out who it is by and then buy BoC albums.
However, I doubt many BoC fans will go out and buy BMWs just
because they allowed them to use their music.

So, in the end I reckon that BoC get far more from the deal
than do BMW.

And if advert music ruins things for you, do what I have
done - give up TV!

Nina Simone
James Brown
Curtis Mayfield
Moby (not really ha, ha)

Its a hardware store in Britain. The advert was sooo cheesy.
They make their own UK garage tunes for their adverts now
ha, ha.

Tubular Bells is on the new Volkswagen advert too. It
sounded better in the Excorcist, hence my point re: films
and adverts.

just to clear things up here, as i am in the marketing
profession myself...

BMW most likely uses an outside agency for their ads; that
said, it was probably here that the track was chosen

often times there are young people that work at these ad
firms who know underground music

not to say that the boards made a good decision in approving
this for BMW's use, but big fucking deal - BMWs are
beautiful and awesome cars and who knows; maybe Marcus and
Michael got a nice ride out of this for themselves :)

Bjork did a peugeot ad.... Play dead anyone? come on! It's
not that bad. Music is music and you can listen to it how
you want. It shouldnt ruin it unles you want it too, like
growing up. Dont feel like you cant have a waterfight on a
hot summer day coz you're "getting on" so dont feel like
music sounds shit coz it was on an advert.

Some one could say, "I love that song on that ad" and you
can say, "It's BOC. I've liked them for ages, you know
that!". "Oh yeah, sorry"

see?

No to sucking corporate cock. This really is symptomatic of
our consumer driven culture. No one is immune, not even the
mighty Boards. If it was an advert for Stannah Stairlifts
i'd have been chuffed however.
